Car advertised with Michelins Dealer not replacing like with like?

The brand of tyre is called Three as I read the whole thread ;)

Where does it say that 4 of them were fitted?

I'm not being difficult here, I promise.

I think I'd be concerned that the car would have 3 new tyres and 1 part worn, especially on a 4x4. As long as the tyres are a good make I think that would be ok, but I'd want 4 the same!

It was only 3 tyres replaced and ironically the brand name is Three :)

If you really want it take the car and put some decent rubber on stick the 3 new tyres straight on eBay... You never know someone may buy them for more than they originally cost.

As said they have replaced them, it is a pity they didn't mention the tyres needed replacing and you could have negotiated a premium brand before they fitted the nasty ones.

My local dealer did a similar thing with my vRS, took 2 well worn Continental Contact2's off and stuck on what I can only describe as awful plastic things made by "Kenda" which in the damp didn't work very well.

Where does it say that 4 of them were fitted?

I too was confused with that one. But came to the conclusion that the correction of '3' to 'Three' that a dealer wouldn't replace only 3 tyres if they were that cheap. Hopefully we'll get it clarified. Either way, it looks like he will have to replace them all to be happy

Just to clarify, my line "as I read the OP" was meant in the present tense of read, i.e. "as I understand from reading" rather than a dismissive past-tense "because I looked at the first post"; sorry for the unintended ambiguity that you may have got on the wrong side of. :)

I guessed that's what you meant. I was just teasing. no offence meant either :)

Still waiting for Sale manager to respond as he is busy.

But his last word were £295 for 3 Michelins to go on and "he has never had this experience with someone complaining about NEW tyres in the 12 years he been in his job"
He also told me it was not a sport cars they were going on :nerd:.

I think I will get 3 Uniroyals delivered to a local tyre company in Bath get them swapped over and ask the Manager if he wants to buy my 3 tyres for a tenner a pop..which I think is what they are worth..

Feel safer on the drive home

Wheres the classified section:
For Sale
(3) Three tyres been told they were safe

Why swap 3 tyres? Is the one you are leaving on a nearly new tyre? Do you rotate your tyres?

Problem is most people wouldn't care. I had a similar thing buying a renault a couple of years back. Front tyres were shot and asked for them to be replaced specifying I was happy with mid range tyres but not budgets. When I turned up, what a surprise it had tyres I had never heard of on. When questioned the dealer simply said "but they were more expensive than falkens". Sure like that makes them good.

I think as long as the tyres are the correct size/spec/speed rating etc then they have fulfilled their obligations.

Most people would just be delighted they had 3 new tyres.

I, like you, am not most people.

I think if the dealer valued your custom they'd work with you and come to a mutually acceptable arrangement. Maybe fit replacement mid-range tyres splitting the cost 50:50 or similar.

I'd vote with my feet and buy elsewhere to be honest. Or accept its a distant purchase and put some new rubber on at your convenience. I'd probably leave a pair of Threes on the back and buy a new pair of something respectable for the front, whilst keeping the other new Three for a full size spare.

[sorry OT, forgive me please]

That's reminded me of when we bought the Fabia for my missus. It wasn't a Skoda dealer, but it was some sort of car dealership in the Swindon area. It was much older, 8 years old at the time, much cheaper and hardly a comparable model, but it had been made nice and shiny. Most importantly it was a lovely colour (Corrida red), according to she who matters.  When I looked around it, there were only two matching tyres out of five, yep, four different manufacturers out of five tyres! And the proprietor proudly pointed out the throttle body and said "that's a new EGR valve we've fitted for you because the old one was playing up for the last owner". (The real EGR valve failed a few months later).

It's been a bloody good car though. :D

[/ends OT]

I wouldn't continue with this purchase. Get your deposit back, try and find one privately?

Contact Skoda UK and ask them why one of their franchised main dealers is selling the most premium spec of their most premium model with cheap Chinese tyres under their endorsed approved used car scheme.

It isn't acceptable. You aren't asking for Michelin's, simply tyres from a well known and respectable tyre manufacturer, just like they do in their factories.

The reason the dealer has chosen these tyres is because they are the cheapest tyres available. Nothing else matters to them other than cost. This to me demonstrates the dealers attitude towards their cars and their customers.

If this is their attitude then it is highly likely that when you get down to collect the car you'll find other issues that they won't be able to resolve before you need to head home. They know this and they know that you are highly unlikely to bring the car back to them for further work.

The car should have been put though the workshop before being photographed and advertised. If they had done this then the photo's you'd viewed would have revealed the poor choice of tyre and the dealers attitude towards using quality parts.

Ring Skoda UK first thing in the morning and ask them to speak to the dealer on your behalf...

A mate of mine just bought a 3 year old Citroen DS3 for his wife. The two rear factory fitted Bridgestone tyres were close to the limit, two brand new identical tyres were fitted after the deal was done for no extra cost.

Exactly my point car should not of been put up for sale and photographed for sale on theSkoda Approved website....

It was after the price was agreed and I wanted to pick it up last week to be told it has not been prepared yet..

If I had seen in sitting on 3 "Threes" this would of been the first topic of conversation with them.. :nerd:

Still waiting on a reply on what tread is left on the N/S/R

Got this reply earlier tonight

"The front two were under 1mm and the rear was on 2mm"

They were selling a car with two illegal tyres? Nice!

I take the point others have made about needing new tyres in any case, so, so what.  However, I agree with Silver and think there's a risk of greater disappointment.  The behaviour you've experienced would make me walk away and continue the quest for a better car, somewhere else.

Yes I understand your view and share it some extent, but DELBOY has already paid for a flight, rail and accommodation. It's an awkward one.

I still say, bite the bullet and replace the tyres yourself. You might be cutting your nose off to spite your face a little, especially as you haven't been able to get one of these cars until now. Mind you, if the previous owner was a private one, then I'm not impressed they let the tyres run down and not care a hoot. Did they drive the car with similar disdain?

I think I am convincing myself that the car isn't so good after all.

Given the salesman is being a bit of a jerk you could always speak to the manager when you get there and ask if he would be happy with 'itchy pussy' brand tyres on his car (I presume he wouldn't be driving a Dacia). Seeing as you are going to buy the car have some ideas ready on getting a further discount for anything that is not quite right with the car. You may find a small scratch or dent, or missing luggage tie down items from the boot, etc. Go over it with a fine tooth comb and use that for negotiating. If the salesman is still being difficult ask the manager to deal for a different salesman. They will try and hold the same 'line' but someone there must be more reasonable. Anyway, as others have pointed out, at the end of the day its just a set of tyres, so its a lesson learnt and you can move on and enjoy the car.

What's the cost of ditching the (almost) unroaded "Threes" with a refund and getting 4x decent tyres fitted.  The dealer should be charging you wholesale but maybe you pay that money direct to the tyre shop?

I have decent tyres on my cars. But in my case with my vRS I knew I was looking to change so kept the pilot sports on right to the wear line and traded just before I needed to spend £500 on 4 new ones.

The fact the previous owner if it was private, put Michelin tyres on indicates he or she looked after it or valued there lives :)

Got this reply earlier tonight

"The front two were under 1mm and the rear was on 2mm"

So what car did they get the picture from in the first post? That looks more than 2mm to me.

It is indeed an awkward one and at the end of the day a judgement call.  If the car's worth it then it's probably not worth worrying about tyres.  In the cold light of day, if it's a car I wanted, I'd want to go and see it, and then make my mind up.  I've driven 400 miles to look at a car, said no thanks, and driven home again.  And on my last two CRX's, the first thing I've done, more or less, has been to replace all four tyres.

Going from 1.6mm to 'under 1mm' doesn't happen overnight, premium brand or not.  This leads me to make an assumption about the previous owners attention to detail and safety.

Unless I was desperate, I'd still walk, but if you're committed to travel plans and arrangements, don't be afraid to call it a day if you hear alarm bells or find anything else not to your liking.

And if it were me, and I decided it was the car for me, I'd drive it home on the Three tyres rather than worry about changing them asap - you never know, they might be perfectly alright.

Hope it goes well, whatever the outcome.

I don't think you would drive around on front tyres with LESS than 1mm tread! To me that shows they didn't care for their own safety or any one else's and I am sure that does not apply to you.

Phoned Skoda UK this morning and they were very apologetic that I was unhappy with the situation but they  can do nothing at all but speak to the dealer concerned..

Lady was very good at her job

Dealer just phoned saying they were the "most cost effective tyres they had fitted" and have told me they should have fitted 4 new tyres due to them not knowing it was a 4x4 (big badge on rear).

So I am now going to have 4 tyres for sale in the classifieds

Progress

But they will not be replacing tyres from what is fiited to the vehicle at the moment even after I have said again I will pay any costs involved to upgrade to a decent tyre.

Hi mate, just going back to your original post, did it specify the car had Michelins in the add? If so why did they make a big deal about it? It's not being sold as per the add and your being mislead in to what your buying!! I'd argue misrepresentation!

If it didn't and as long as the new tyres are the correct speed rating as much as they've mislead you, in law they've done all they need to do!

I've got a 170 4x4, it's great, you can feel it's more stable on the road, you'll love, I use mine for towing a 1450kg caravan, like the reviews say one of the best tow car out there, surprised not to see more!

I have a Superb on lease, if I returned this at the end of the lease with cheap Chinese tyres it would not be acceptable and I'd be charged for their replacement with a similar brand to those fitted when the vehicle left the factory.

It should work both ways.

What about the ratings for the Michelins that were fitted, I bet the 'Three' tyres aren't as high scoring, maybe go down that route?

Have you an email address for the dealer, maybe a few of us from here should let them know how shoddy their attitude is....

just buy your own tyres mate and sell the others
