Best place to get oil ?

Featured Replies

Hi

My 1.9tdi pd100 (ATD) is coming up for a service soon and I'm wandering where everyone gets their oil from?

Up too now I've done 2 services myself using shell helix 5w30 and I've been getting it from europarts

Can anyone point me in the direction of an alternative place or oil

Also does anyone know if running on 5w40 like some other threads say is the better option to go down?

My car is 175bhp at the minute soon too be 210bhp if this is a factor to consider

Best regards

That is cheap good find.

Opie have a huge choice of suitable oils and some good deals on sometimes. I've read somewhere on the Seat forums folk with tuned PD engines recommend using the VW 507 spec longlife oils, not sure why they think it's better though. As ever the subject of 'which oil' always has many differing opinions. Stick with either 505.01 or 507.00 specs and you won't go far wrong.

I found this too that's why I wasn't sure, so everyone goes for 5w40 to that spec ?

Sorry only just seen your post my bad haha

Take your pick really, as long as it says VW 505.01 (5w40) or VW 507.00 (5w30) on the bottle then it's the right oil and will be fine, there's also an 0w30 to VW 507.00 spec from Shell. If you've been using the 5w30 VW 507 then I see no reason to change.

A lot of the 507 spec oils are at the thicker end of w30 grade, as an example the Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 has a cST viscosity @ 100*c of 12.1 and the Quantum Platinum 5w40 is 13.

For a w30 grade the cST viscosity @100*c falls somewhere between 9.3 to 12.5 and w40 is between 12.5 to 16.3, the examples above show that the Mobil 1 oil is pretty close to being a w40 grade and the Quantum w40 is close to a w30 grade.

Worth checking your local TPS, have some really good deals at times.

As mentioned Opie oils are reliable and reasonable. They also sent a glove, air freshner and dipstick wipe last time I bought 5 litres off them, don't know if they do that every time...I like a freeby, especially a surprise one

Tps, £28 for 5l of quantum

Edit:- slight off topic posting warning!

Your comment about Shell providing a 0W-30 probably explains why my Audi dealer commented "refilled with 0W-30 to VW507.00" when my S4 had its last service, annoyingly now you've pointed out that the Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30 is almost a 5W-40 - and that is what I tend to use for the "in between oil+filter changes" as my S4 is still on longlife servicing - for my convenience maybe! Knowledge can be a bad thing - maybe.

The majority of the oils meeting VW 507 spec are at the top end of the w30 grade, most are between 11.5 to 12 cST viscosty @ 100*c so very little between them, 12.5 and upwards is into w40 grade. Wouldn't worry about it :)

The 0w30 Shell oil your dealer used would have been the AV-L which has a cST viscosity @ 100*c of 11.9 so barely anything in it compared to the Mobil 1 ESP.

Good enough reply to keep me feeling okay about it, thanks!
