TV geeks, your assistance please

I would add to ifc958's comments about size that the TVs look much smaller in the shops because they're basically warehouses. In there a 70" looks about ok

I've sat in front of a 60" telly in a very small flat.. It'd fit in my room fine but I'd prefer a 55" to be perfectly honest..

We're shopping in May, bit of luck the new TV's will be out by then and I can have different options.

There are some on-line calculators, you put in how far from the screen you will be sitting, and they calculate which range of sizes are best; I will admit I think the sizes they give are slightly on the high side, for my situation it said 55", but I find even our 49" set HUGE.

When it comes to wall mounting, dont pay the STUPID money the TV shops ask for  a static mount, go look at this on Amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00IRC3PZ0?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00

This is what my 49" is mounted on, and a friend was so impressed he ordered and fitted one to his new big screen as well.

We decided it'll be on a cabinet, not on the wall... IKEA have something suitable for under £50

Something I've been reading about this afternoon is that some Samsung units suffer from lag quite badly.

I'm not a hardcore gamer but do like to partake so lag is of concern.

I noticed a couple of comments in that review for the LG I linked to earlier were rather critical of it in gaming and sporting uses.

This is of some concern. I need to find out who lags least.

4K and gaming dont mix, if you want to game, go for 1080p. The engines driving many of the screens can only managed about 15 - 40 FPS at full definition in gaming mode; I think this has been partially addressed in some of the newer (High End) screens.

Well I only do the gaming thing on consoles which don't (yet) do the 4k thing and I reckon it'll be a while before they do it properly, without just upscaling existing titles.

So the question is, can you normally dumb down a 4k telly to full hd for games?

Sorry, I cant answer that one; it is something I havent tried; I do my gaming on my PC through a 22" screen right in front of me. My son has a PS4 and uses a TV, I think his new TV is 4K, so when he answers his phone, I will ask him if he has tried it.

I told ya I'd go for a Panny. ;)

Now once you get the TV sorted when are you starting the research on the full home cinema AV receiver and speakers????? :D

That's my research project at the minute as my current Yamaha AV receiver (RX-V659) is just about to hit it's 9th birthday and as it's pre-HDMI is starting to cause issues input wise. The current front runner is the current Yamaha equivalent (RX-V679). The 659 just keeps going and would make a great starter amp for someone just starting out in the AV world and i'll be honest if it wasn't for the need to tidy up the input situation on both the plasma and the amp and me wanting to get some network integration into the amp I would keep the old amp going till it died.

It's going to be strange only having one HDMI lead going to the plasma rather than the current four though!!! :)

No mate.. I'll use the standard speakers or a sound bar.  I'm no audiophile, just like a half decent sound with some half decent volume.

Just a world of caution, make sure your soundbar can cope with 5.1 DD as if it can't there is a chance of a very noticeable audio level drop when watching Freeview HD channels. This is most noticeable between shows that are in 5.1 and those just in stereo (advert breaks often show the difference and it is quite marked). If it hasn't been a problem before now, then I'm sure it won't be in the future  :)

so when he answers his phone, :D

Imo a sad fact of modern life.

Yeah, I should have said "IF" rather than "when". For someone running THREE contract phones, he never seems to answer any of them.

I Know that Sony get their panels from the likes of Sharp, Samsung & LG but you can bet that the image processing side will be bullet proof and the image stability amazing.

I have always purchased the top of the range Flagship models from SONY and they take some beating. I Personally don't like LG's offerings and prefer Samsung to LG although I am a regular on AVforums and see that LG have seen a resurgence in popularity. So personally I would go SONY but I have a Sony amp and PS4 with Bravia sync makes it so much easier to control with one remote. Then second choice would be Samsung then LG. But as with all these things its down to personal preference go and test them see which looks best to your eyes. If your into gaming then input lag will be important. Sony hold the crown in this area or at least they did when I was looking.

This is of some concern. I need to find out who lags least.

He who lags last, lags longest

If it lags a lot, does that mean it stays warmer during the winter months?? :notme:

Telly's were always nice room warmers and the aroma was unique. You could almost read by the glow from the valves!  Mind you got a hell of a bite if you went anywhere near the EHT bits - the best dust collectors ever!

Ah the good old days of snow and lines.

They tell me there are colour tv's  now - that'l never catch on.

I fondly remember Degaussing them with a wand if anyone knows what that is.

Modern TVs give off a bit of heat as well, it feels like my 49" screen gives out as much as a 400w panel heater some times.

For sure.. the old crt's used to heat up the back, new tellys heat the whole panel.
