Anyone changed dampers on an S3 ?

Featured Replies

Hi all

I'm considering changing the dampers on our (non-DCC) S3, as I find it too bouncy/floaty.

My son seems to get travelsick more in the S3, and this is with the car empty - I think it's underdamped and will be even worse with loaded boot / roofbox / bike carrier.

I've used Bilstein B6's on a couple of cars before, and have found a supplier in Germany that will sell for *way* less than I can get in the UK (in fact just bought a set for my Yeti from them).

Just wondered if anyone else had done this yet on a Superb 3 ?

Link if anyone's interested - comes to around £340 delivered:

Bargain ;) maybe we should set up an import business, undercut UK suppliers and still turn a profit  :nerd:

Yes I should give credit to Darrell for finding the supplier.

For the Yeti, cheapest UK price I could get for B6's was around £520, but got them for £360ish delivered from the site linked above.

Both Darrell and myself ordered sets last week (for Yeti) and both had them turn up without issue.

Vet fast delivery, have you managed to get yours on the Yeti?

Not yet, need to buy a few other bits first, top mounts, bearings, bumpstops, couple of rear arms etc - then find the time to do it, could be 2 or 3 weeks yet...

Im keepeing all that standard for now, want to see how it feels with the car being new, all getting fitted on the 29th :)

With our S3 only having around 2.5k miles on, at least it would just be a damper swap - nothing else should have worn out yet!

@Muddyboots

after upgrade please share info have you solved NOISE IN REAR SUSPENSION problem

that is amazing Škoda can't find solution several months

No, that is a different problem, I don't have the noise, sorry.

I don't think you can just alter one variable in suspension and expect to solve a problem, it's such an horrifically complicated and time consuming endeavour to perfect. What about the roll bars, springs, torsion dampers, geometry, software, tyres pressures / compound etc?

Unless I'm missing something, the dampers linked above appear to be for the Superb 3T - the previous generation...

I looked up the B6 front & rear part numbers for the 2015-> Superb on the Bilstein website, and those are the right ones.

Sure, but you can come awfully close and after changing dampers you should be getting a proper 4 wheel alignment anyway.  Part of that will be tyre pressures.  That's 3 of the variables checked off your list.  If you're happy with the spring rate & know it's under-damped then that's #4 checked off.  There are no torsion dampers in a Superb and no software related devices in the OPs vehicle (no DCC).

A good modder will look at all the related components and decide which is the most likely item to upgrade and then change that component in isolation, review the change in dynamics and adjust any further mods accordingly.  Review, change, review, adjust, act - it's how we do it at work all the time.

Personally, I'd rather have a crack at getting the suspension right rather than sitting on my hands and thinking it all too complicated.

The Bilstein website shows the B6 fronts for the 2015- 150 4x4 as 35-229872 and the rears as 24-229890. The dampers linked above are 35-122074 and 24-172936... It may be that they are compatible of course, but I would double check!

Well spotted, not sure how I ended up pasting the wrong link....amending in first post now. Ta

Looks like you're going to be the first to do this mod on the S3, it's exciting doing things that haven't been done, it's how I felt with the Greenline project :)

Do it, cha cha cha :)

What are you thinking of doing for springs?

Damper change only - the B6 dampers are designed for use with original springs.

No desire to lower the car, just make it less floaty bouncy which contributes to kids feeling travel sick.

Hi,

I have the 1.4tsi sportline Superb3 and i feel your pain and have the same exact issue Skoda weren't interested at all. I'm wondering whether they have made it soft as **** incase they do a VRS model.

Anyway same thing bouncy and ploughing through the travel on back roads. Cornering is fine just undulating roads at over 40mph is horrible.

SO have you fitted this yet ? if so how harsh is the ride ?  I'd like to hope this just absorbs more energy reduces the bounce and makes the car feel more Audi like! PLEASE tell me this i'm hovering over buy myself.

I love the sportline so practical and great for the family room in the back and boot etc but i'm so hacked off with this dampers i'm tempted to sell up after 6000miles and get a  E series or maybe an a6 avant and compromise on the boot.

A b6 damper might just be the ticket to making the superb a bit more fun and predictable over wavey roads and bumps.

I have very funny story about that phenom.

I had car for 1 year now and I recently drove over 95km/h into sidewalk (sideways with rear right wheel) which caused car to start spinning out and I drove over 2 more sidewalks (literally over them, if car didn't jump). Any how.
Luckily insurance covered whole 4 repair which was 3 new wheels, 1 was painted, rear structs or something like that (the thing that holds wheel straight) and after all repairs rear noise is 100% gone. I was very annoyed by this noise and I could never get rid of it. After they changed rear hydraulic bearings it was ok for 2 days. But now its been 2-3 weeks since the repairs.

I'm not suggesting you do the same, but I can ask my service guy for list of parts that were changed...

+1 on this.

I have a Superb 3 combi 190tdi manual with standard suspension (non DCC) and the only let down is the suspension. On some roads it's fine and on others it bounces along. It can be dangerous at speed if it's a twisty undulating road, most cars tend to settle after a bounce but this wants to bound 2 to 3 times!

I'd be happy to fit new dampers, coilovers or whatever if anyone has done this and confirm that the bounce has gone or at least  been reduced.

Not looking to reduce ride height just better control.

Anyone? Cheers

Never did the change on ours unfortunately, so can't comment.
