Cannonball- Our Story

Featured Replies

A bit late I know but for those who fancy a read here is our Cannonball Diary, a lot more happened to others, this is just our story

Stage 1 Sherbourne Castle

Sounds like fun :D

Wow, what a trip.

I've driven lots of those roads in the past, but never with a target to beat!

Sounds like a brilliant trip -and 19th against all the exotic competition is brilliant!

Congrats!

Phil

Hmmm - my mate who was watching the start with me is already thinking of entering a car - we'll probably go for the most powerful, cheapest, car we can find. - He's thinking old jag, old merc or old beemer.

Old Bentley is what you need... :D

Rob.

I would have paid good money to see the Skoda going past that Ferrari

Seen Paul's pass F355, NSX, 911GT3, all on track....

Funny how at the start of any event no-one notices a skoda, but by the end of the day everyone wants to know more.

Not wishing to blow my own trumpet.....but.....

You may not win, but i reckon you'll embarrass some considerably more expensive machinery....reliabilty first...then power ;)

Even though its not officially a race lol

:D

Sounds absolutely FANTASTIC!!

Great write-up! :D

A brilliant result, Stuart, and one of which the select band of 4X4 owners on this site can be proud! redface.gif

Are any of our outspoken and intrepid vRS owners going to enter the next Cannonball Race? thinks.gif

Nice write up for what sounds an awesome experience. I just looked at the results - very well done! Interesting spread of speeds - the farthest from the target speed was a +40.61 mph implying an average well in excess of 100mph

Funny, i don't remember seeing an estate in those pics ?

Already trying to save up for next years

Dump the sub & amp, 150 litre diesel tank in the boot - 130mph top speed, no need to refuel for over 1000 miles.

Yes it was great & an experience not to be missed & to be savoured again next year where the destination is Greece.

Jason, the Black XJS which you may have seen at the start was only bought a few weeks before the event as they obviously thought like you. I believe they made it back although they had a coming together with a Porsche in the rain in the last but one stage but I heard a large hammer was used to administer "running repairs" & they limped on. The Yellow Maserati also had an off in that stage & came home on a lorry slightly "re modelled"

The Westie also failed to make it back "apart from a piece of melted metal" which the owner kept as a souvenier. Aparently it caught fire on the last stage & was totalled although it had already had a very eventful journey. Pictures of its demise are now on the Gallery on the cannonball site if anyone is interested

The Merc which went out on the first night is rumoured to be totalled, The Cossie put a rod through the block followed by an oil fire in the Engine bay. The owners put it out with Red Bull. Aparently they had been running flat out for several miles having a play another car !!

The ford Mondeo that was already fairly battle scarred lost its oil cooler having straight lined several traffic cones & the plumes of smoke were followed by a siezure, another for assisted repatriation

Yep it sounds mad but 49 crews made it back & many like us unscathed, many incidents were unfortunate & others were due to excessive enthusiasm. The MR2, the MG, The Hummer all made it back unscathed & I believe all had a blast so you dont need a hyper car to enjoy the event, just the determination to finish & drive to the level you want. Its not a race, its an experience.

Lastly picking up on Hucks comment 99% of the credit for the write up must go to Wendy, I just added a few bits

Guessed you wouldn't be writing of yourself in the 3rd person Stuart :p

Forgot to point out earlier you get a mention in the overall review on the Cannonball site q.v. "... the hard-charging Skoda of Stuart and Wendy J ... " - obviously made a strong impression !

Sounds like a great trip. Wish I had the bottle to attemp something like that! :D

Ditto to the comment above:D

Ok Guys, we need another Skoda next year, why dont some of you enter, their seems to be some interest here.

Following on from the Dutch equivalent of the Cannonball which was won by a Superb Diesel with a big Tank I think Diesel may be the way to go If you seriously want to win.

The car that came third this year was only .04mph off the Target time & that was a Merc Diesel & they lost several hours due to mistakingly putting petrol in the car

If you are not serious about winning like us just come for the experience, its hard but its soooooooooooooooo much fun

great write up

thinks for a nice holliday in the wifes motor

mmm

i would love to go however the swmbo veto might be an issue :(

An event like this doesn't scare me in the slightest - It would get my adrenlin pumping, but this is a LOT MORE my kind of holiday, than lazing / getting drunk on some mediterranean island. With a good map of Europe and a decent motor, (and some dosh) I'd have no hesitation doing this next year.
