dpf and low mileage

Featured Replies

Please help .. and apologise if this has been asked before .. I'm looking to but a vrs .. was going to get used petrol but have found a very high spec diesel vrs .. problem do about 8 miles a day doing school run .. through a town and a bit of country side .. then once a month a burn up down the m5 from the Midlands to Devon to see me folks .. am I best to get petrol so don't get dpf issues with diesel due to low mileage ..

I took out a lease on my diesel vRS when I was commuting 18 miles a day. Then a month later changed jobs and now commute 3 miles each way to work in Liverpool city centre. Which is basically standstill traffic and have been doing this commute for the past 12 months with no DPF issues whatsoever and I very rarely even get regens. So from my personal experience i'd say you should be okay!

I would buy a petrol if I was only doing 8 miles a day, none of the emissions rubbish to worry about then. I mean you might get away with it but it can't be good in the long run the engine will be running below operating temperature a lot of the time aswell

This is as a diesel vrs owner... Why would you want the interior car when the savings will be minimal?

Hold out for a nice petrol one.

I'd be tempted for a petrol at that mileage, the difference in price between new Petrol and diesel is from about £200 quid. If you are not doing big mileage IMO I don't think it will be worth it.

Replied in your other post to this - but as others (and running two diesel octavia mk3), I'd go petrol also - not strictly over dpf reasons but the petrol offers more power for slightly less money and not much in the loss of realistic mpg for your situation

Petrol, purely because its so much smoother and doesnt have a tractor engine! And this comes from someone who has a diesel VRS on order - but I do 30k miles pa.....

I went from a 1.6 diesel with DPF to a 2.0 petrol with my 12 mile round trip with no noticeable difference in fuel usage though longer trips remind my wallet I'm driving a petrol.

I will add in my 2 years of doing the journey I had no DPF related issues mainly due to knowing how to look after it. (a long journey every couple of weeks, EGR blanked, regular oil changes, premium fuels).

The VW diesels engines in the O3 seem fairly robust with regards to the DPF.

I don't remember any people on here complaining that things are broken & they needed a costly engine repair.

My wife mostly drives my vRS for her commute (~12km each way).

I use the car a few days a month to drive 120km round trip.

We've had no problems at all & even managed to keep a reasonable fuel economy.

I would say that this kind of mileage is borderline for a diesel though particularly in the winter when it takes longer to get up to temperature.

If you miss your long distance trip a couple of times, you will likely start to recieve poor fuel economy as the ECU tries to achieve a regeneration.

Worstcase, you will then get the warning that you need to drive for a longer distance.

Not really the end of the world but a bit annoying.

I understand your dilema though.

There are probably lots more diesel vRSs out there than petrol so waiting for a good spec'd one to come up might take some time & will likely cost you more for the same spec due to lack of supply.
