Best MK1 Fabia model/varient

Featured Replies

First Post! Just need abit of Fabia MK1 buying advice.

I have tried looking on forum for posts like this, but couldn't find any. Apoligies if this has been asked before.

Just wondering which are known to be the best mk1 Fabia models (Reliability, cost, what its like to drive) and engines. I have been looking at 1.2 12v's on eBay/Gumtree but i don't actually know what they are like to drive and whether they are known to be 'good' engines. My girlfriend has a 1.2 '06 Polo s would this be pretty similar comparison? Unfortunately don't think I can afford / afford insurance for VRS!

I'm open to any recommendations! Skoda's seem to have a lot more value than VW's , as every Polo I've seen at the same price has 120k+ miles!

Cheers!

I'm 18 with a 1.9TDi pd100 Comfort model, and I've had a crash last year.

You'd be surprised how cheap they are to insure.

Ah I didn't realise -  I will have a look at quotes now! What are they like reliability-wise and to drive?

I had a 1.0 Polo when i was 18 - that was £900 on my parents insurance!

I've only had it since October last year but mine was rather battered when I first got it so I've just had endless amounts of stuff but I knew what I was in for when I got it.

I can't really comment on how reliable they are in general although I'd personally recommend one and I find it a pleasant drive, has just enough power (albeit I want more) to enjoy.

Best for power - VRS

Best spec - Elegance

Best for reliability - SDI

Best for insurance - 1.2 Classic

Best all rounder - 1.9 PD100 elegance

Best all rounder is surely a vRS SE hutchy ;) ( not that I have an SE ).

I'd have an vrs se with a 5 speed box and G60 flywheel anyday :D

Be different, get an estate :)

Best for sticking out like a sore thumb.....

^ I saw one yesterday (?) round here, same body, same colour. Couldn't believe it. You weren't over this way were you?

The Mk1 Fabia is pretty much the same car as her Polo.

I'd agree with Hutchy's list, but add on the SDI for economy. I can get well in the 60mpgs in dads, my PD130 Ibiza needs a gentle foot to get past 50mpg.

Hi and welcome.

If you need any help with insurance at all then please feel free to drop me a line.

Regards,

Dan.

Why don't you contribute something useful like telling him which are cheapest to insure?

Is your girlfriend's 1.2 a 6-valve or 12-valve? If the latter, then it's the same engine exactly as what's in a 12-valve Fabia (same would apply for 6-valve versus 6-valve in Fabia). If hers is the 6-valve then you'll find the 12-valve has a bit more go at the top end. Economy is nothing special on the 1.2/12, barely over 40mpg (long term average on my missus's is about 41), which most of the 1.4 petrols will match or better. Not sure what the insurance diffs are. 1.4 MPI is a nice easy engine to mend apparently, if you're into DIY; the 1.2s not so easy.

Each to their own like I'd suppose. I think I could get better on fuel, IF I tried in mine, but 50 with a bit of fun thrown in is good enough for me. Problem with all the models with D in the name is tghe 4 year/60k cambelt bill .

Problems with the 1.4 Tdi- top end gearing for motorway work- this is where a sixth/overdrive on 5th to keep the noise/revs and consumption down would be useful . Brakes- adequate, but I think Skoda are one of the few makers not to fit discs on the rear if a TDI model. Personally, I'd like to see how a 1.4tdi would perform with a map to 100. ( Then you would need better front discs and drums changed to discs ).

I've got the 1.9 with the same, short, 6 speed as the later VRS. I can be in 6th in a 40 if I'm pottering. By 70, I could do with being in about 8th if I had one.

Hutchy, you seen the SE (#1) that's for sale in bedlington? It's on eBay at the mo.

Cant see it, had a quick look though.

Take that back, it must have sold quick!

Turns out its 796 not 1 lol

Sorry, im slow, been looking through ebay for it :D Its been for sale for quite a while actually.

Looks lovely!
