However, I will fight my eager anticipation to rob him of the keys and drive away and go through the "acceptance" as carefully as possible.

So, my question was "is there anything in particular to look out for"

I've never bought a new car in my life, so any experienced comments welcomed.

the usual wings dings scratches, missing trim or spec. make sure you go over the car with a fine tooth comb

and most of all enjoy the drive home

I'd agree with Alex - look for any external damage. This is important because once you drive it off the forecourt the dealer could claim anything you found subsequently hadn't been there when you picked up the car. For this reason try and make sure you pick up the car in good daylight.

Other stuff should all be covered under warranty. Don't expect perfection - no car is perfect. Just enjoy!!!

Not sure how applicable this is to the Fab but it certainly is to the Octy RS..

Check under the front bumper for scrapes where its come off the transporter.

make sure theres no grubby hand / footprints in the car.

Check: -

Fluid levels (oil, coolent, washer) tyre condition and pressures; damage to alloys; is the wireless tuned; check CD - if multichanger, it has the CD cassette and it works; all lights work; leccy windows; Central Locking etc. etc.

Then look for: -

Protection film/wax left after PDI; evidence of rubbing compound (white dust) in the gutters / door shuts; flat spots in paintwork; interior condition (no rubbish under seats etc.).

Generally, check everything is as it should be for a brand-new car. If there are problems, bring it to the attention of the Dealer Principal and get it fixed before you go.

Look along each side of the body carefully for any signs of 'dings' or ripples. Ask how everything works. Oh, and check what sort of servicing it has been set for, ie variable or fixed. There should be a sticker on the RHS of the dash saying when the next service is due, and similar information inside the Service Schedule. And if you wish to keep it on variable servicing (which it should come factory set for), ask the dealer for a litre of Longlife oil to keep in the car.

Denis, interesting point about variable servicing. I'll ask. Still not entirely sure what to believe - i.e. if the vrs comes with longlife oil and is "certified" for variable servicing intervals. Stickers, handbooks and dealer's words should clarify that.

I suppose the main thing to look out for is cosmetic damage as this is what could escalate into disagreement if ever there were a scratch / dent / indelible fingerprints, etc.

but my dealer asured me its variable on my furby vrs

could be upto 20k miles with oil change in between.......

if driven softly?????

Are you sure? I think my Fabia is on variable servicing, since about 6500 and 10 months old it asked to be serviced.

My Furby is set with fixed 10k/12 month service intervals. May get variable if you ask for it. My service history sticker is also on the engine cover, not on the dash.

I'm quoting Skoda UK's FAQs! Perhaps K can give us a definitive answer on this issue?

I have had an e-mail from skoda stating variable servicing is NOT available for the fabia!

Another thing to look for is the paint quality on the front bumper. Perhaps mine is a one off, but the paintis starting to flake away on the passenger side in the style line half way up the bumper. Am taking it in sometime over the weekend to see what the dealer is going to do about it! :(

i dont know if its just me.. but the suspension seems to have settled down alot now (1500miles) and its alot more confident and grippy in corners

Sow how come mine flashes up a service indicator warning then? Is it elegance only?

Dont know but I had an e-mail from Rachel Court at Skoda customer services... "I Can confirm,with regret, that the complete fabia range, vrs included, is on a fixed servicing regime. Every 10000 mile or 12 month whichever is sooner. I do understand that in our Octavia this engine is capable of being programmed for the variable servicing option,the fabia does not have this capability"

Hmm. interesting about the variable servicing.

Asked my dealer and he said "It isn't normally available, but if you want on your 1st service, we can change it to variable servicing".

Not too sure if he's checked out all the implications, but I'll probably stick to fixed 'cos I do a lot of short stop/start trips and not often long motorway runs, so don't think it would do too much harm to change the oil more frequently.
