Hi,new to the forum and to car ownership. I have a 10 year old secondhand Skoda Fabia which has recently developed 2 faults: the electric windows won;t work and the car has a habit of sometimes locking itself almost immediately after I unlock it.

I took it to a local garage to look at the windows - neither of the buttons on the driver's side nor the button on the passenger side would work. They tried replacing the driver's side switch and said it worked immediately but it has now defaulted to nothing happening. They suggested it might be a window motor issue and the motors in both doors would need replacing but it seems a bit weird that both motors would fail simultaneously surely?

 

The self re-locking has been a bit patchy but seems to have got worse since I had the windows looked at.

 

As I have little idea how any of these things work and how they are linked, can anyone make any suggestions about whether the faults are linked and what the cause(s) might be?

If you try putting the key in the drivers door lock and turn and hold the key in the unlock position then both of your windows should go down. If they move then you'll know it isn't the motors and it should be a switch/wiring problem.

(and to put the windows back up just turn and hold the key to the lock position )

Confirm AdamW,   This action resets it all,  You need to hold the key in the unlock posn for at least 30 secs

 

IF that does not work, then it is usually due to damp within the door electrics, the warmer weather will cure it, or try and get a hairdryer blowing into the door card

Thanks for the tip. No movement at all. Damp seems a likely issue and lo and behold it's raining right now so unlikely to get better any time soon!

More than likely the drivers window motor.
