Where to get a 1.8 TSI reliably rebuilt engine in the UK

Featured Replies

Hi all that can help.

As you can see we are new to Briskoda.net and have only just bought a Skoda Octavia 1.8 TSI (10 plate 76K miles, £4100.00 great car but) ......Gess what... 1L of oil pre 600 miles which is a bit steep. Car drives and runs great with loads of exceleration.

The oil is been inducted from the PCV. We have replaced the PCV with the new type but still clean oil is getting to the Turbo intake and then been burnt and reduced to smoke.

We have done a compression check on each cylinder and get (Cylinder 1 to 4), 160 psi, 153 psi, 151 psi, 150 psi which to me seems about right. BUT on a blow-by test with pressure set at 4 bar we get (Cylinder 1 to 4) 3.4 bar, 3.6 bar, 2.4 bar 3.6 bar and can hear air coming from the oil filler cap on all pots.

Our conclusion is......... Reconditioned engine needed.

My question to you all in Skoda land is....... BEST PLACE TO GET RE-CON SHORT ENGINE.

We are currently looking to try to get one from "GERMANENGINESPECIALIST" who are on ebay and based in Kent. We live in Birmingham but would like to buy from a company who knows about the 1.8 / 2.0 TSI engines rather than just a generic engine builder.

With eyes bulging from reading posts about the subject, we were wondering if you all could give us a bit of advice.

Many thanks Harvey (Father) and Conor (Son and owner)

Many thanks FREEDOME.

I will give them a call tomorrow.

All the best.

Welcome to Briskoda  :sun:

A little too late but this may offer some interesting reading...

It might be a long shot but a 6 year old car with 70,000 miles shouldn't need a new engine, known fault or not. What levels of Skoda main dealer service history has it got?

It would be worth a 2 minute phone call to Skoda UK to enquire about any out-of-warranty gestures of goodwill. This will require diagnostics by a Skoda dealer and the work carried out by one of their dealers too which will mean maximum prices, but if an offer of goodwill was made available it might offset the cost enough to mitigate the risk of sourcing and fitting a recon engine?

Fill in this form, someone from Skoda will ring you in 24 hours...

Thanks again FREEDOM.
We have looked at the “Engine Failures” page but unfortunately only after buying the car.
The car had Skoda service up till 66,000 miles but Skoda have no record of that last service (at 66k).
I wrongly quoted the cars mileage as my son has just said “Its done 71,000 when we bought it. Now has done 72,000 and 4L of 5W30
We have spoken to Skoda and they want £600+ just to check the car over and then if they did the work (£3700.00) they would not cover the chain tensioner replacement as this car has no recalls on it.
Skoda would need the car for a week to check the problem and then it would have to be booked in for any engine work to be done which could stretch in to 3 weeks and Conor would have to find another way to travel the 60 miles round trip each day and as he is an apprentice engineer at GE would also cost extra. Skoda, in my unprofessional opinion would at a guess only cover 20% of the cost as the car has done 72k.
Onwards and Upwards (Or downwards).

Hands up........just Noticed that "FREEDOM" is not a members name.

Thanks silver1011 and patrol man....sorry for calling you both "FREEDOM"

I sympathise and fully understand not wanting to pursue the Skoda main dealer route.

The £600 diagnostics sounds a little high, to me it is a deliberate ploy to put you off.

With those sorts of amounts I too would be preferring to pursue a recon engine myself.

The only advice I would offer is to be very careful, there are too many rogues out there. The BBC Watchdog investigations were eye opening to say the least. The two most memorable being Complete Engine Solutions and Ideal Engines & Gearboxes. The problem is that these outfits change their company names as often as their underwear...

Good luck!

My new car is 5 years old, has 16,000 on the clock and has been serviced every single year by Skoda main dealer. (Looks like it is on fixed servicing) Admittedly I haven't studied the service book too deeply yet - I've only had the car a week and I've been enjoying it :)

Should I have confidence in mine? I bought it from a Skoda main dealer though so I am at least covered with 12 month warranty and roadside assistance - however, it's after the 12 months I am thinking about - I intend to keep this car for 5-6 years.

Thanks again Silver1011.

So far I'v booked it in to DAL JONES AUTOMOTIVE LTD (ENGINE AND GEARBOX BUILDERS) who are in Kent which is a 300 miles round trip (1.5L of 5W30) for the 1st of June 2016.

I can't find any bad press given to them and after speaking to Matt (from Dall Jones) he has given me a good impression.

We are undecided whether to just sell the car as "Spars and Repairs" on ebay and cut our losses as it looks like the re-con engine will cost over £2800 after paying for the work and getting the car too and from Kent.

Hi g_tee. Don't know how many cars are affected by the problem, probably only a small amount of the thousands sold World Wide.

Im still looking for a trusted re-builder near Birmingham who can be trusted. My delemer goes on....and on.......and.....

Well I drove it all the way back from Edinburgh last week and so far it's been a dream to drive. I will have a good look through the service history when I get chance (I'm working nights tonight else I'd go look now)

Hi g_tee.

We love the car but it just the oil burning.

I believe the newer 1.8 / 2.0 TSI engines are a lot better.

Happy motoring.

Is it a bad thing to want to part exchange the car and move the problem on to a car dealer? Feel a bit bad thinking about it but we were stitched up and we stand to loose in excess of £2000.

It's now booked in to "Halesown Engines" in Halesown West Midlands. Going for just a "piston ring" change and cam chain kit.

They only do the full re-build but cost £3200 + vat and didn't want to do a ring change even though they had done it to two 2.0 TSI before the TSI engine became a know problem engine. Now only the full rebuild with uprated con rods with the bigger gudgeon pin and new type pistons are done as they have a good reputation and don't want any cars to leave the workshop without them feeling completely happy with the job. They have said "It's not the best way at all but might last another 25k if it works". Been as i'm a cheap skate, i'm hoping a ring change will get us by for 12 months. If this doesn't work well then it's part exchange time.... Wish us luck.

Have you tried running 15w-40 502.00 spec engine oil?  You might be surprised.

Warranty isn't an issue anymore and you can run whatever you want.

Also, what about a 2nd hand 2.0tsi?  Should be fairly reasonably priced but you'll have a "Frankenstein" car then.  2.0tsi is my preferred option when i kill this engine.

  • 2 weeks later...

Up date.

Just collected the car. Now to do 500 miles then recheck oil level / replace oil and filter then 1000 miles and my 25L oil can will be removed from the boot. No smoke as yet.

Best wishes for your oil consumption test. At least your engineers sound knowledgeable and honest.  The full reco prices are not cheap but then again, a good job is not cheap and the cheapest job, is not necessarily the best, or even most economical in the long run.

I do hope the new rings solve it for you - it's not nice being landed with this on a used car purchase......

Is this a real weak spot for the 1.8tsi even more so than the 2.0tsi?  Thinking with 25 litres less oil in the boot that must be a measurable fuel usage reduction which will no doubt payback inside 50 years.

  • 1 month later...

So far........... As of 10 July 2016 the oil consumption is okay. We have only topped up once keeping in mind the car has now covered 3500 miles and we had an oil leak, only a light drip coming from the main crank seal on the DMF end (we also had the clutch fail so at the same time I replaces the crank seal which comes in a bolt on housing). We are happy with the new ring replacement but time will tell. I will try to keep this post updated.

I used to work for a company called ivory searle based in Cambridgeshire. We did a top job with all new pistons bearing valbe stem seals etc used. Not sure on priced though.
