TYRES ?....

Featured Replies

Hi,

Had a 2.0 TDI Scout for seven years now and have always used Dunlop SP Sport 01. Quite a few variations, some have rim protection, some don't.

Seen good reports about the Goodyear Efficient Grip, but, what's the wear like !  Years ago I have had tyres that were great in the wet, handling etc, but wore out much quicker than expected.  The Dunlops have averaged around 28,000 miles and although two are ready for changing and the Goodyear look good on paper, I am undecided, try something new or stick with what you know.

Mine has got 3 Dunlops SP sport on and one Falken I think it is of the top of my  head. Don't do many miles, prob 4-5k  year at most. Only time i ever have any problem is pulling way from a junction in a hurry to join traffic and there doesn't seem to be as much grip as I'd like, though that will prob improve with new tyres whatever make I end up with.

The efficient grips seem to have gone down well on here, but are about £70-75 each on the sites I've seen.

Blackcircles currently have the 205/60/15 tyres for £55 for either Avon's or Falken's and mytyres.co.uk have some Toyo's for the same sort of price.

Been looking on tyrereviews.co.uk for info on them, seems like quite a good site.

Still can't decide which one's to get though!!

I love my car but the price for 225/45/17 tyres is horrendous with big brands coming in at well over £100 a corner supplied and fitted ... It's enough to seriously have me considering downsizing to 16" or even 15" wheels

try Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas - less than £60  online in your size (same as my civic) and a cracking tyre...

I've used both previously with no issues

Hi Skomaz, those are good prices but are for delivery only ... By the time you add on delivery charges and fitting charges ... Some places are charging £20 per wheel and £1.50 disposal you're looking at the best part of £150 a pair

Correct on delivery only...   I assumed, obviously wrongly, that you'd have a local garage who could fit at a reasonable price...   I paid less than £10 a corner all in.  Stilll £50 cheaper a pair than you were suggesting though??

Hi Skomaz, sadly I don't know anywhere locally who'd fit tyres they've not supplied...

This is one of the cheapest places I've found lately.

Price is fully fitted at a local garage to suit you.

I've had cross climates on the Octavia since January. Warm dry performance doesn't seem any different than the Goodyear Efficient Grips they replaced. Wet performance is far superior to the Goodyears especially with standing water. The CC's are quieter too.

Winter performance?

I swap Summer/Winters on the Passat and Fabia. I'd say on fresh snow the cross climates are nearly equal to the Sottozero winters I have, on compact snow the difference is wider but the cross climates are still very good.

On ice the winters are far superior, the cross climates are better than the Conti Sport summers but they don't have the security on ice as a dedicated winter.

Overall I'd say the Cross Climates offer good dry summer performance, excellent wet performance and winter performance that is good enough for 90% of the UK. They will prevent you getting stuck in snow and give good braking on snow but not the ultimate grip on ice as a good dedicated winter.
