Sat nav fault

Featured Replies

Having an issue with my sat nav, I collected the car on Monday and inserted the SD card into slot 2, it reads it and recognises it's the sat nav data. When I try and access the sat nav it tells me to insert valid sat nav media or something along those lines, in essence it doesn't work full stop! Is it a faulty unit or a faulty card? Will skoda honour warranty on the card considering they issued it!?

The dealer put my sd card in the slot nearest the passenger door whichever slot that is and mine works fine ... Hope this helps.

Is it a genuine Skoda SD card? No other card will work for the navigation.

As Jonesy220 said, i's it in the correct slot?

They are usually fitted to slot 1. If it's never worked it could be the wrong card or corrupted. Providing you haven't messed with the card there should be no issues with warranty.

I think there have been other posts on here regarding the original equip SD cards having security on them to prevent copies being made, so ensure that the dealer hasn't tried to copy one and pass this off.

Regarding your position for corrective action, I'd say you haven't any issue provided all you've done is use the SD card provided in a normal manner. IE not tried to reformat or mess with it.

The booklet tells me to insert the SD card into slot 2 which is what I done, I've tried it in slot 1 also and still the same, it's a genuine skoda card. I'm the 2nd owner and it was a euro rental car before I had it

That probably explains it. Someone has probably tried to copy the card

It could just be the wrong card. there's a few different versions.

I thought SD2 was for your music, the slot nearest the wireless that is.

1. Despite what the manual says the sd card should work in either slot. That certainly was the case in all the Octys I ever owned.

2. Formatting the card or copying it should not normally brick the card unless the device writing to it caused an irrecoverable error. The security is in the firmware of the card. You cannot access that area of the card. Thats why you have to use a genuine Skoda card.

3. Unlike other sd nav cards for other makes of car (eg Mercedes Garmin) the card is not "tied" to a specific vehicle. You can use it on another Amundsen unit.

Most likely the card has just developed a fault - I unfortunately experienced this following a map update that somehow went wrong and corrupted the inaccessible firmware area. Dealer was initially not interested in exchanging it - I had a bit of a row with Skoda over it and they relented in the end.

PS: I forgot to add that maybe somebody has attempted a map update and screwed up the process. Just reformat the card and try and apply the update again. There are plenty of threads on this forum about how to do this. Preferably avoid doing the update via an Apple device unless you know what you are doing.

Spoke to skoda and it's booked in, they've told me though if the card is the problem then it won't be covered under warranty! So of course this will be a good argument as I've not had the car even a week yet so will be refusing the car back to the dealer I got it from unless it's resolved by them! Just means a trek back to Edinburgh if they agree to sort it out.

That is the exact reaction I got from Skoda when my SD card failed.

If it is a genuine card (it must have the part number, Skoda log etc printed on the label on the card itself) then they should swap it under warranty despite their stated objection.  All SD cards can fail - my Skoda card failed almost immediately after my new Octy was delivered. I challenged Skoda to demonstrate why this was NOT a component failure of a genuine Skoda part - they were unable to do so and swapped it - albeit reluctantly.

I must be a Jonah as I have had a similar problem with the Sat Nav SD card with my newly delivered  Mercedes. That is a Garmin system and the SD card costs around £400! The Merc system is a different beast compared to Skoda as it holds system software as well as just the map data. In my case the Sat Nav worked 100% but when I tried to update the maps the Merc central update system told me it was an invalid card and unrecognised by Germany HQ - luckily Merc changed it without question. After my Skoda experience I was steeling myself for an argument but fortunately it did not come to that.

The point I am making is that SD cards can be flaky and fail for all sorts of reasons. I'm sure Skoda is well aware of that but may need a good prod to replace the card.

Supporting Minimoke's point - ownership of a genuine card is the same as the licence for Microsoft Windows - the support system provides a full copy of the software if the original is corrupted. Licence is everything. So if your SD card is genuine and it doesn't work, they should replace it.

Oh I'm all for a good argument so if push comes to it then I'll argue the point. It is a genuine card and if it isn't a genuine card then arnold clark would be at fault for selling a car with a fake part that is standard fit in the elegance model which is what my car is. So we shall see what Monday brings but I will be arguing till I'm blue in the face lol

Juego - all the time with a smile on your face and in a calm voice. That really gets them riled. Then they lose.

It's being sorted by the supplying dealer. They phoned me today :)

Update to this, still awaiting a new SD card however I spoke to the dealer again today and we have narrowed down the problem, my SD card says world excluding Europe!

Apparently skoda are aware of this and will swap my card, however I spoke to my local skoda dealer and they've never heard of this!?

Am I starting to get the run around to avoid giving me an SD card? Both dealers are being adamant it is not covered under the warranty but it's not my fault my car has an incorrect SD card for the sat nav! It's beginning to sound like I've wasted 14k tbh as my toledo sat nav system worked perfectly and as a taxi driver it would be good to have it working!
