Can a tuned (160bhp) fabi vRS beat a cooper S?

Featured Replies

Just how quick are these Fabias??? There are so many posts about them.

Having driven a Golf TDI 130, it did FEEL faster than it actually was and ran out of puff at 3 figure speeds on our continental jaunt.

If a shopping car with a tractor engine is quick, my Octavia must be incredibly fast! :)

Another deluded Octavia driver I see.

Had a good look through this thread, am about to get rid of my second Mini Cooper S mostly due to 45k on the clock (its a Feb 2004 car doh!) costly on fuel and insurance and as someone kindly pointed out since I got my first S in 2002 they have become very popular with estate agents and hairdressers :D.

I have total respect for the Fabia VRS, actually had a dig at a few Cooper owners hehe when it beat it on Top Gear and 5th Gear.

Well looking at purchasing a Fabia VRS in the next couple of weeks, due to very reliable, far better on fuel and insurance and fancy a change as well as liking the car as an all round package, will also be getting some extra power to at some stage when ive looked into it more.

Anyway back to the question, well cant say ive come up against any VRS's, I dont believe they would stand much of a chance around the twisties as thats the Mini's party trick and its even better with the Eibachs on mine.

In a straight line I think it would be a close call but it does all depend on who is driving, isnt the 160bhp Diesel Ibiza quicker to 60 than a standard S? maybe this gives some idea?

Had my S at Silverstone last year on the 0-60 with those horrible runflats full tank of fuel and a bootfull of overnight bags etc 7.4 secs (traction control on) and with it off managed a 6.94 and a 7.2. Since then have ditched the runflats for Toyo's, eibached, Miltek cat back.

Its a good question and once ive bought my VRS and had it remapped il certainly be wanting to find out as quite a few of my mates have Cooper S's.

Give it a few thou on the clock first or you'll lose - they're really tight when new and do get significantly quicker by 6 or 7k on the clock.

At one of the sprints at Anglesey in Septmeber 2004 (Warrington MC I think) there was a Mini Cooper S Works and a Fabia vrs with a remap (no other mods).

Over the weekend there were about ten runs and the fabia was only beaten by the Mini once. Fabia would have been faster if it could get the power down better.

Also, Fabia VRS's really like it when it's a cold crisp day, they have more "zip" than normal.

I've driven both a standard Cooper S and a standard Fabia VRS. Driven properly on an A/B road I feel the Cooper S would, and will win every time come rain or shine. As for a modified VRS...well my gut says the Cooper S would be a tough cookie to beat...hands up who can prove it?
