It's entirely up to you.  They're fantasic cars, but be aware of the known faults, particularly of the petrol 1.8 and 2.0 TSI engines.  Check the engine failure sticky thread at the top of this forum.

million dollar question...depends on what you want!...

I have the DSG... one of the best gearboxes around in my opinion... double clutch with pretty much instant gear changes...they are not without fault though... so make sure if you do go for one its been looked after and had the necessary oil changes...

I wouldn't have a manual now... the DSG also comes with multi function steering wheel with paddle shift... standard manuals come with pretty much a bog standard wheel with no audio controls etc..

very fun to drive and respectable mpg figures for a 200 bhp car..

the petrol version is again not without fault... tsome have been known to have pretty catastrophic engine failures.. all to do with the timing chain and tensioner..again.. not a show stopper but something to be aware of.. a 2012 model would likely have the new parts fitted.. but if not.. factor in 400-600 for the parts... obviously more press about it on here as its a forum and typically you will see more problems on them as owners join to rectify problems ask for advice etc..

as for diesel.. do you need diesel?... driving style, commute..annual mileage..etc etc..

My last 3 cars have been diesel.. but low mileage driving and short trips didn't make it cost effective with the higher initial outlay.. so decided to go back to petrol.. yes I visit the pumps a little more often...but not so much that its an issue between fill ups and easily see 40-44 mpg on a run... not so much round town..maybe 30-32mpg...  but saying that my diesels before this weren't too dissimilar round town....

If petrol as said go for 12/62 plate as it will have latest revision tensioner, brilliant cars and great for tuning, but it all depends what you want/need, diesel/petrol, manual/dsg, i have a 6spd manual and wouldnt even entertain dsg but thats where we're all different

One thing to remember is the practical use of the car. It is a great all rounder.

Thanks for that guys ,what's the service cost on these cars like ? And when do you change the dsg oil is that separate to the engine ? How much does the remap cost ? Exhaust? Etc how much would you pay for a lowish mls 2010 2012 estate car? Or do you no were there are some for sale ? Cheere guys!

I have a petrol VRS with manual gearbox. The autos are really good, I just prefer manual. As to what you will pay for a particular vehicle, that's flexible. It took me over 3 months to find the one I wanted and a good one is so rare, I did pay over book price at the garage that sold it. Worth it for me though as I am extremely happy with the car. In other words, in the petrol VRS market, you pay within reason, what the seller thinks it's worth, forget about official book price. That's just a very rough guide. Lots more diesels on the market than petrols, so if a diesel car is what you are after, you will have better luck finding a good one faster.

planehazza above, talks about problems with the petrol engines. He is talking about the timing chain tensioner failure. You can sort that out though, by getting the latest timing chain tensioner fitted. It does mean some cost, but it is something I am just about to do to mine at the moment. Put aside about £500-£600 for this. As I intend keeping the car for some years, yes I love it that much, this cost to me is worth it. If you do end up getting a 2012 petrol, it should have the latest tensioner anyway. Good luck with your vehicle search.

Lots of questions there. All are answered in other threads on this site. DSG on or before 40k miles.  Yes it is seperate and a different type of oil which is quite expensive.

Edit. Good sticky here.  http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/320854-octavia-mk2-engines-dpfs-cambelts-oils-brakes-and-servicing-info/

Dealer charge about £170 for DSG service.

Dealer minor service is £160, major about £260 - all on skoda website.  Independents maybe slightly cheaper but not really in my experience. You do get more personalised direct mechanic contact though. Remap £400 - £600 depending on what you go for.

Edit:[performance] Exhaust £500 and up depending on how much you replace.

I have a 2011 FL 2.0Tsi DSG Estate, it took me quite a few months to find one with options and even then I had some issues to iron out.  It can be quite a challenge finding a car with all the boxes ticked.  Costs - consult autotrader or a valuation site for a guide.

skoda service costs are fixed oil service £130 so called major service is £249, dsg is a seperate charge not sure how much but i think its every 40k i could be wrong ,

remaps cost from £250- £450 depending which brand you go for shark remaps are popular on here and are very good nice smooth progresive maps unlike some which are to spikey low down and give wheel spin not good

try auto trader or ebay for cars for sale to get an idea of prices they will vary as there will be some high millage cars of that age out there now .

I'd definitely say test drive both the manual and DSG to see how they compare and then amother comparison against petrol & diesel...

(as for DSG and my biased review, that's purely due to lifestye and an injury where a manual is too troublesome with my back and foot especially in stop start traffic)

on paper the DSG is a fraction quicker...goes to show how well the gearbox manages quick gear changes... it is a lot of fun for a roomy and practical family hatchback..and the boot is huge
