Battery cable through bulkhead

Featured Replies

I've moved my battery to the boot, got a box and it looks pretty awesome. But I can't find anywhere to thread the cable through to the starter. I looked up ways of doing it if you're threading amp cable but mines a lot thicker so wouldn't work. Is there anywhere I can drill through the bulkhead safely? Is it best to drill into the cabin as opposed to drilling into the engine bay? Would it be easier to run the cable under the car and if so would it be safe to do so?

Thanks

Jacob

Hi Just wondering what reason for moving the battery is? A diesel starter draws a hell of a lot of current especially in winter when the glow plugs kick in too, and the longer the cable the more resistance you will have? You are also running an unfused high current cable through metal components if you go through the bulkhead so any snagging and shorting is going to have catastrophic results! Bearing in mind that cable is permanantly live! You may want to adopt someting similar to a ford transit which has a big high current master fuse as the battery(s) are under the drivers seat.

Something like a 100amp circuit breaker will be fine.

What gauge cable are you using? 4awg will easily go through the regular grommet.

The resistance of even 10m of 4awg will be so negligible it is a non issue

Makes you wonder why they bother to use 35mm2 cable for the short distance between battery and starter in the factory set-up...

170amp 25mm2 cable. Wanted to account for amp loss over the distance being as its further than original. I just wanted to know if drilling through was a viable option if there isn't already an existing hole that isn't a pain in the arse to get to. I tried finding the hole you have used using a wire coat hanger but no dice

Try going from the engine to the boot rather than vice-versa.

Is that a hole you drilled a pre existing one?

The safest and proper way to do it with a bulkhead connector :)

Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/360898369203

I will, thanks

Does that bulkhead connector come with any covers, to prevent accidental shorting to the exposed nuts/threads? Doesn't seem all that safe otherwise. :nerd:

You buy the terminal covers to suite your cable ;) its not rocket science! :D

Same seller that does the connector doesn't mention in the listing that they also sell terminal covers...Seems like an opportunity missed! :D

As neat as that would look I still don't like the look of that much, I would think a cable run through a hole lined with a grommet or a stuffing gland as used above was perfectly acceptable plus with the bulkhead connector you are adding two connections that can become high resistance and fail, which isn't an issue with a straight piece of cable.

Yeah would make sense tbh :)

It's designed for the job.
