Suspension upgrade

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

Does anyone have any recommendation for suspension upgrade for the vrs combi, I've had mine just over 12 month and have found the rear suspension ride is pretty harsh it's more hard than firm, and when going over speed humps it feels like it is nearly bottoming out. any suggestion would be much appreciated. unfortunately we are pretty limited with these resources down under (Australia) as Skoda is a fairly young brand here.

Our car shares similar suspension setup as Gti mk7. Some people has experienced better ride (and look) after switching to VWR spring, I believe Harding Performance in Coorparoo stock this.

If you want to go the full beans you can consider looking at full coilover setup either from H&R, VWR or custom build locally by MCA Suspension.

Personally I find the vrs suspension to be quite firm but provide good body control, certainly doesn't feel like it's bottoming out. If I can make a comparison, very similar in term of firmness and harshness to a C class riding on a Carlsson (KW made) Coilover.

PS: What colour is your vrs? I don't see much of them in Brisbane. Mine is Race Blue with debadge rear.

H&R springs are a good set up as are the cou lovers I believe. Had mine on the 40mm springs on VRS which drops it 25-30mm and its spot on even loaded up

First thing to check is that the transport blocks have been removed from the front suspension. A surprising number of vehicles have had them left in and it uses up most of the suspension travel. I found them in mine and the transformation in the ride on their removal was immense. You will need to jack the front of the car up to extend the suspension and you are looking for brightly coloured plastic blocks, 2-3 per side. Other than that, the switch to Golf components gives a much more compliant ride.

But is the spring rating good enough for the heavier  back end?

Mines a white manual wagon over by the south side with black roof rack, Reason why i am asking about the suspension, if it's just the spring replacement doesn't it just make the ride even harder, I think the damping of vrs isn't as good compare to a lot of european cars (comparing to vw, audi, bmw.)

By the way have you had a chance to look into ecu tuning?

I will be keeping an eye out for yours! if you see someone flashing its not wanting a race.

I actually find the damping on my RS to be quite good, it's a very settled car. Slightly better than those in VW (I had a Tiguan before this one) and Audi (have driven A4 and Q5). It has similar feel to the way Merc (excluding AMG model) managed their ride although in a less cossetting manner. Mine is the earlier RS, maybe they revised the damper on a later model.

If you are unhappy with the damping, go straight to the coilover. Much better ride than replacing the spring.

I've entertained the idea of ECU tuning, but with the way they potentially flagged your car as modified during service discouraged me from doing so, especially with my 5 year warranty :D.

Although a piggyback may mitigate this flagging issues. Have a look at Burger Motorsport tuning. I believe few VW boys has had good experience with them.

I think I've seen your car around in Eight Mile Plains area, will definitely keep an eye for it :)

I had a bit of a chat with Gabriel from Unitronic (Cleveland) regarding a stage 1+ which is pretty good and he said he can return to factory whenever it needs to go back for service free of charge, its got a slightly lower torque and horse power gain which i thought might be better for the factory clutch. its a bit more than the piggyback you are looking at but it's a lot cheaper than APR or oem+.
