New Water Pump Cracked Impeller

Featured Replies

Hi my 2013 Octavia 2.0 TDI engine code CKFC had a leaking water pump which we replaced. However after fitting the new pump it kept overheating and after trial and error we took the new pump out to find that the impeller had cracked. We ordered another pump and fitted it, it slipped into the block nicely and we did the bolts up with no resistance however when we tried to manually turn the pump to ensure it was free it wouldn't turn. We undid the bolts and removed it, only to find that that impeller was now also cracked. We have checked that it is the correct pump and compared it with the original one and all seems to be fine. We can't see anything in the whole that would cause the impeller to bottom out and crack when tightened but we can't see anything that would cause it. We have read the manual and it doesn't describe any special way to install it.

Does anybody know where we may be going wrong please?

Don't think there will be much experience of those doing their own maintenance on the Mk3 just yet.

Only the very early ones will be coming out of the warranty period.

Also it seems that a lot of forum members bought on PCP/PCH arrangements and regularly renew their vehicles.

Is there a gasket involved? Is it the right thickness?

I would say wrong gasket, missing gasket, or O ring, Never seen one though so all speculative.

As Gerrycan says I don't think many people will be doing their own maintainence on the Mk3 yet.

However, the water pump seems like quite a common failure.

There are a couple of very helpful guys on here who also work for Skoda garages (a very nice chap from RRG Rochdale for one) who may be able to give you some advice.

I take it your car is now out-of-warrenty hence trying to change it yourself?

A leaking water pump is the most common manufacturing fault/defect on the mkIII Octavia. I have had mine replaced twice. As the original leak was quite probably due to inherent manufacturing defect Skoda should cover it's replacement beyond normal warranty period. By EU Law manufactures must cover manufacturing defects for 6 years from new.
