Is the diesel Vrs that much of a compromise over the petrol

Hi all, without getting into a petrol v diesel war,I'm so tempted to go petrol dsg estate, but freighted of poor mpg.is the diesel that much of a compromise? The way I see it the diesel will always be around 13 miles per gallon more. I don't want to be tickling it,scared to put my foot down. (Although that is not often)it is on the motability scheme, they are exactly the same deposit.so no extra purchase price. 8000 miles per year I average.go on some one please tell me to man up and go petrol!!!

A petrol Vrs can be good on fuel, it depends on how you drive it. I have a MKIII Tdi Vrs at the moment but I have a MKIII 230 Vrs on order.

 

You get the best of both worlds, economy when you need it and low mpg when you don't.

Depends on how you drive your 8000 miles! If it's lots of slow town driving only giving it beans every so often then go petrol.

If however you do good open road driving where you can let the engine flex its muscles then you can go petrol but you would see mpg gains in the diesel.

I went from a petrol MkII Vrs (DSG) to a MKIII Vrs manual diesel, nothing wrong with the diesel but I have a manual petrol 230 Vrs hatch on order

Thanks lads,keep on twisting my arm!! The superb 170 4x4 dsg we run 46 is the highest mpg ever had on maxi dot so thinking maybe pretty close.mind I never get in the 20s lol........

I'm hoping to get my 230, when it's run in, into the low teens, it's the only way to drive them

I really like my tdi but wish I'd gone for the petrol... The long journey mpg is a big plus as I do have a second car for proper hoons!

Your mileage suggests petrol is the way to go.

Go petrol! It's effortlessly smooth, buckets of torque across the whole rev range, pretty fair on fuel when you want it to be (I can easily achieve 40mpg combined) and when you do want to make progress its no slouch

No regrets at all from me and I came from a vw diesel

My oiler vRS, whilst still new, isnt very economical.... Last month I did just over 3k miles & used £400 of diesel!!! Worked out to be 39.4 mpg...... If I would have been screwing it constantly I hate to think what it would be.... Them 3k miles included a long motorway drive from West Wales to Kent & back.... I have read people getting late 30's out of the petrols, so with you doing just 8k miles pa, ABSOLUTELY go for the nice, smooth, quiet petrol especially if you're going DSG, I find the marriage of DSG & turbo diesel to be pretty $hite to be honest.......

I do similar mileage to you and considered Motability as an option.  I went from a diesel Superb (2.5 V6TDI) to a petrol vRS and it was the right choice for me.  MPG's are as my Fuelly below, so not much difference.

 

If mpg's your priority, maybe consider other options to a vRS.  If it's not, the petrol is likely to suit you better, but as Mr Adamwood said, it does depend on what journeys your 8000 miles are made up of.

Petroleum it is! Now what colour combo! Red interior.Def black pack, sunset glass, to 19s or 18s rims that is the question!!!! Will I regret not getting the 19s I like race blue but to common.like primer but could I live with it for 36 months. I won't ever have black again,love grey but looks hard to keep clean.got white at mo so fancy a change. So thinking silver with black pack and 19 inch rims might be nice? Or possibly red? All opinions welcome thanks paul

I have a diesel vrs, and on my last journey I averaged 29mpg. To be fair, I was (am) in Europe and that journey was 106 miles and I did it in 65 minutes! Obviously it was all on a private road but at times I was cruising at 130. I think that's a pretty respectable fuel economy. Would be curious to know what a tsi would do at those speeds

30 mile commute 5-10 min on and off motorway. Cruising at 68 mph on the motorway

I've gone from mk2 Vrs diesel to mk3 petrol - petrol is much more refined

Leaning towards red or grey. I have eliminated silver. I love the grey but I think it is a bit like black ( hard work ) the last black car I had I swore never again.

Please go with petrol, at 8k a year it's a no brainer, I've done over 53k on mine and never regretted choosing the petrol, it's really smooth and quiet and pulls really well.
