Is the diesel Vrs that much of a compromise over the petrol

Diesel costs - servicing as well as fuel - only make sense if you do over around 15k miles a year, and you're paying. Below that and it's mainly down to personal preference.

Had my diesel VRS for 2 years with DTUK box and pedal. 240ps and 500Nm torque but can still return 60+ mpg

 

These kinds of post make my blood boil.

 

I'm not in any way casting aspersions but can I ask: what do I have to do to get 60+mpg out of my VRS in normal day-to-day driving?

 

Genuine question?  Never got more than 43mpg so either I'm doing something wrong or my car is flawed.

Read the road ahead so you do not brake unnecessarily 

Check tyre pressures and maybe run them at the pressure for a fully loaded car

Be gentle on the throttle

Make sure one brake is not sticking slightly... does one wheel get dirtier or hotter than the other on the same ‘axle’?

Lowering your speed will make a big differance

 

There are many other ways to, like coasting out of gear etc, but this type of thing you have to actually try rather than just adapt your driving style a little.

 

Every car I have either remapped or fitted a tuning box to has gained better economy... that is apart from the DTUK box I fitted to the Yeti, that for some reason drunk the fuel on a steady 300+ mile run at 70 mph on CC.

I agree it's utter tosh.

I have a vrs dsg TDI and driven normally on my 30 mile commute to work it's around the 52 mpg mark.

There is no way in the world in normal driving it would hit 60 mpg .

To be fair you have to drive quite conservatively to even hit 52 mpg on my work run.

I'd say to hit 60 I'd would need to be downhill everywhere

I have a 14 month old VRS TDI Manual and commute approximately 30 miles each way per day. The roads aren't great but I manage at least 49mpg average. If I take my time or if there's traffic I always manage 55mpg minimum.

So "by taking your time" you get 55mpg.

 

What else do you think you could do to get 60+ mpg (with a tuning box fitted)?

My commute is 25 miles down a dual carriageway doing around 70mph, and I usually get 50-55mpg there with traffic ahead breaking the air resistance and without traffic coming home around 50mpg. I have had an average of 60 once going to work in the 5000 miles I've had the car. Those figures are from the trip computer mind.

My commute is 25 miles down a dual carriageway doing around 70mph, and I usually get 50-55mpg there with traffic ahead breaking the air resistance and without traffic coming home around 50mpg. I have had an average of 60 once going to work in the 5000 miles I've had the car. Those figures are from the trip computer mind.

Sounds spot on what mine is like too.

That's Normal everyday driving.

I could get 60 plus sitting at 50 mph And annoying everyone but this is not normal use unless you are 75

Have you adjusted the trip computer using VCDS since fitting the DTUK box?

If you haven't I'm going to guess the readings are about 20% optimistic.

The box fools the ECU into overfueling (amongst other factors). The trip computer uses the original fuelling amounts when calculating the MPG.

I would try a few brim to brim actual calculations and compare them, and adjust accordingly :)

I filled up in Reading and then deliberately drove at 56mph down the M4 earlier today back to Bath before filling up (74 miles).....I managed top get 7.74 litres into my tank.

Agreed the mpg without readjustment for the box will be out but maybe not as much as 20%?would imagine still in the mid to high 50's and for the torque/bhp the point I was making to the op is still valid and worth considering.

Cool no worries. I made no claims to 0-60 as can't get the traction to benefit from the added performance, it's all in gear where you feel the benefits.i did post the evidence of the mpg from the computer although I know it's not so accurate. All I am trying to do is give the op my experience from 2 years of ownership from new of the vRS TDI.

 

I also wonder if the DSG can kill the mpg slightly on the TDI as this is what you and tubbytommy have?

Much too short a distance to be any guide to realistic mpg, over, say 5000 miles. Unless every journey is 28 miles long at 37mph.

IMHO.

More just trying to show what is possible whilst still having around 240ps to play with if required. This journey above included driving through Edinburgh city centre rush hour then some 60-70mph motorway on my way to work. Remember the mph is also averaged. Long term was showing just over 50mpg for about 2.5k miles. Most of that is town driving though. I can upload if required.

One of the reasons I monitor my consumption is to identify issues early. I usually have a good idea what my consumption is going to be before I even start my journey and most variations either way are accountable by one or more factors. If I cannot readily account for a negative variation then I investigate further, an example being that I now know my two year old (half worn) tyres seem a lot more porous than they used to be when new and now all require much more regular 'topping up'.

 

I'll go out on a limb and say that based on your reported consumption (by my maths you got 6.5L/100 or just over 43 mpg) that you have got a problem because it is about 30% worse than it should be at that speed (assuming you have got a diesel).

It would have been good if you could have given us the Maxidot consumption for the distance as confirmation that your refill routine was consistent, but even allowing for that and a possible DPF regen (or two) in there, well I can understand your annoyance.

 

There is an element of luck involved with vehicle consumption. Both the Octavia (old mk2 1.9pd, and current mk3 1.4tsi) I have owned have been very good but a couple of, from new, Korean vehicles were lemons as far as consumption was concerned. My experience is that you get very little support from dealers regarding consumption complaints.

74 miles, almost 2 gallons ? Not great for a diseasel :(

 

56mph and 37 mpg ??? I think I'd have to be trying to make double that speed in Fabia mk1 vRS to get that low !

My octy petrol can easily manage that, doing steady driving like that so petrol definitely seems to be the way. Ironically they are relatively rare to diesel vRS !

Although I would probably gave chosen diesel for my 20k a year mileage, the fact you can only get a DSG 4x4 vRS in diesel sealed it for me. Down on power compared to petrol yes, but more effective in damp conditions as no scrabbling for grip.

I would humbly suggest that there is either something wrong with your car, or your driving style. 

 

My wife isn't the best at looking ahead/reading the road, and she's a heavy foot; but she still manages 47-49 on the maxi-dot without trying. I got 51 over a 100 miles of mixed driving whilst still enjoying the performance...

With my diesel i usually get about 40-45 on the maxidot over a 17 mile commute, the problem is it's all duel carriageway with roundabouts every mile or so. I can get it up to 50-55 if I drive a little more reserved (65 mph and gentle acceleration). I need to start going on the back roads more as i usually get mid 50's even when having fun. 

 

The best I managed though was after 60 miles on the motorway from Hartlepool where the maxidot was showing 68mpg. Managed to make it from Telford to Hartlepool and back to Shrewsbury on a little over 3 quarters of a tank.
