front caliper problem

Featured Replies

Hi all, A couple of months ago i changed the driver side front caliper, discs and pads, The previous caliper seemed to be partially seized, dragging on the disc causing a lot of heat which i think warped the disc, so changed them. I have noticed that the same wheel still gets hot and there is a lot of brake dust on that wheel compared to the nearside front wheel, Any suggestions ?

Was the calliper new or reconditioned? Did you copper grease all assembly parts including the sliding pins?

Also, did you bleed it properly?

I am having further problems with mine and although the drivers side has been fine since servicing them both, the nearside is proving to be a b***h and I have decided it necessary to do a strip down and replace the piston and seals.(will probably do both sides).

I would whip the wheel off and check it slides ok.

Having said that, after I did my drivers side first time I had to dismantle (upon guidance of Mr Holroyd) and file the lugs a good bit on the pads.

This side has been fine since doing this.

There is a recent thread of mine on this matter, re Hot brake discs (iirc).

I bought the caliper from Euro car parts, I assume it was recon, I copper greased all the parts, bled it,  BUT you mention the lugs on the pads, That is something i didn't do, I'll try that, Thanks..

Did you get a refund (the surcharge) by returning your old caliper?

If you did how does the return work? (what did you have to do?)

I am now thinking this may be better option for me rather than a piston / seal kit and refurbing it myself.

The brakes have already cost me two days work and now I know that this is a problem.

If (?) you can confirm are your discs 280mm or 288mm? If 288mm do you have caliper part no? and how much you paid?

Cheers.

Corrosion build up on carrier. You need to remove the caliper and clean and dress the carrier with a small file. Lubricate the edges the caliper and pads slide on with certec brake grease (not copperslip which causes further corrosion), also clean/lubricate slide pins. Reassemble and check the caliper/pads slides back and forth freely on the carrier before pumping the pads out.

I think mine are 288mm, The caliper part number is 133442961, That's the ECP number..Paid the extra surcharge when i bought the caliper and returned the old one a week later to the local ECP and got the surcharge back.

Cheers mate.

Hopefully my 133442961 is the correct one for my near side then. Sounds promising.

Luckily they sent me a flash30 code for 30% off. Paid £73.94 with the £23.99 included (to be refunded if I take my old one back).

As said I was going to buy the piston and seal kit but the whole caliper will only be costing me £32.75 extra, so not bad really.

Onto the fitting later.

Did you manage to sort your issue?

If you ask for a wire brush for Christmas and use it on the carrier you will be trouble free for the rest of your life

Brake trouble that is, doesn't work on the Mrs........
