How much should I lower my MK2 VRS Estate?

Featured Replies

I'm going to go for springs as opposed to coilovers.

How low should I go? Any pics of other Estates?

Cheers

If it's any help to you, mine has recently been lowered on Eibach Pro springs.  It now sits like this,

Here's a before and after pic,

Springs%20June%202016_zpsm6kojx1m.jpg

This was taken the day after I'd had the springs fitted so the first pic with the black car in shows how it sits now as they have settled a bit since the before and after comparison.

I've just measured from the floor to the top of the arch - the rears are 64cm and the fronts are 65cm.

I've no idea how this compares to standard as I didn't measure them before I had the springs fitted.

Cheers,

Andrew.

Lowering is for tuners/idiots. Learn to drive, then you don't need lowering

All about spring rates and geometry.

I kept OEM ride hight with pro suspension

And how do you come to that conclusion?

20 years of mechanical engineering, kinematics, thermodynamics, Senior CNC Technician...working for motorsport companies....hobby racing driver...study of advanced chassis setup.

Get books from Herb Adams and Carrol Smith...and you will know everything you ever need and can absorb

If you are upset by my observation, then you are one of them.

You are easily recognised...large aerodynamics as if you were driving every corner over 100km/h...ride height adjustment and screwing up geometry...black smoke from exhaust...styling...yet, most important part still not replaced ;-)

I wonder why people spend so much money on marketing hype such as Bilstein Nurburgring proved...and so on. Still, you drive like grandparents lost on shopping trip. What is point of such upgrades if you can utilise them?

Upset no.  Amused yes.

Personally i wouldnt as iv just been away and car was grounding as std with boot full and 5 people. could even feel back end on bumpstops on motorway at a couple of uneven spots. Just my opinions tho

I'll just leave this here for you to observe.

yep. marketing hype. That's why I went for custom suspension with ride height adjustment 0-40mm

I hope for everyone's sake you aren't stupid enough to ever utilise your ability to lower your car. I also hope you weren't stupid enough to pay for the privilege that you can never utilise.

don't be upset sir, it is not my fault who you are. don't kill the messenger.

Who is upset? You think some random person who can't seem to make their mind up upsets me?

Apologies to the OP for this going off track.

just read what you have written. It has nothing to do with thread...just attempt to prove you're special.

what you have posted is result of knowledge of eExpert in this forum. Fortunately, I came across real people with real experience and changed my mind about.

I see if someone with real knowledge shares something, there is always outcry of desperate eExperts and whole thread goes off. If you can't handle reality, don't reply....simple.

Well if you (op) look at my review of the B12 KIT you well see I taste this highly

I works suspect the eibach pro kit to be good, circa 20mm drop max. I will say that the Bilstein b8 shocks make a bigger difference. If you can afford it I would say go b12

I would say better in every way in all bit rare occasions

Sniper can't believe how much your have contradicted yourself.

If own is so good went do your need such adjustment

Literally every single post I've read from you on my short time on this forum you come across as an arrogant, opinionated and belittling know-it-all.

Perhaps take a little time to read your posts from a 3rd party perspective, believe it or not, it is actually possible to get your opinion/wealth of knowledge on a particular subject across without sounding like a complete ****, you should try it some time.

FYI below are just a selection of some of the car's I've owned and driven on tracks UK / Germany, each and every one of them has had a modest drop and damper upgrade, not only do they look better after a little drop but I can categorically state that it's improved handling (and lap times) and just general enjoyment in driving them all too, you going to call me an idiot too?

My Octavia RS will be getting the same treatment.

getting back on topic...

I fitted a bilstein b12 kit to mine and had a hunter 4 wheel alignment done to make sure everything is as it should be. It incorporates bilstein b8 dampers and eibach 20mm springs so not a massive drop but enough to take away most of the arch gap. The springs are a bit stiffer and the dampers are matched to the springs so it rides really nicely and een with a boot full and people in the back it doesn't bottom out.

I like it and most importantly it drives really well

Edit: sorry not an estate but it should all be the same suspension

Agreed with above, B12 Kit is a great compromise, I've fitted that to 3 of my previous cars and it's what the VRS will be getting too.

Really you want to be uprating the dampers to suit your spring change.

Interesting. I like the height of your set up (the car looks nice too).  I've got a 2011 VRS TSI Estate, Std suspension I assume and the height is about 68-68.5cm front and rear so 30 or 40mm drop it seems from where mine is at.

Certainly looks a lot nicer around the front guards especially and I imagine the B12 kit with the B8 shocks would improve road holding a fair bit too. (I think you said you have only done springs) My VRS feels ok but compared to the 9yo Mk5 Golf GT (not GTI) it replaced, feels a lot softer and floaty - comparatively anyway. Overall I suppose it is still sporty just much softer than what I had got used to.

To be honest, the car is so much better on the Eibach springs than on the standard.  The car handles more predictably now and corners a lot flatter.  The ride is a tad harder but my last car had 19" wheels and adaptive dampers so when that was in Sport mode it really did rattle your fillings.  I think this is a good compromise for the money. My only concern is what will happen when we load the car up with kids & holiday stuff - will it be too much?  Time will tell on that one but we have had all five of us in with a fair amount of stuff in the boot & it's been okay so I'll update people on that one if/when we get away.

If I'd had an unlimited cash flow then I'd have gone for the B12 option from the beginning.  I'm aware that the shocks might be nearing the end of their life anyway so I figured I'd see how they fare with the Eibach springs.  If they die quickly as a result of not being matched correctly then so be it, I'll replace them with something more suited.  As I said though, the car is much more stable and the faster you go, the more stable the car becomes.  The garage that fitted them also noted how much thicker they were compared to the standard springs and were impressed with the quality of the product.

Thanks for the advice all. I'll probably save up for a B12 kit including dampers.
