Fabia vRS 17" Trye Question????

Featured Replies

Hello,

Right, I'm probably gonna get some TT Compo's for my vRS, that will come without tyres........

So what size do I need??? 215/40/17's or 205/40/17's???????

And do they have to be V rated or W??? I know Std on a Furby they are W (I assume to make up for the piece of pig iron in the front)

What do you guys with 17's run??????

Cheers

Steve

I have 17x7.5 " rims and I run 215/40/17 but you can put 205/40/17 or even 225/35/17..... On 17x7" rims 205/40/17 will do.Hope this helps Andy

V or W rated????

If it came with " W " Stick with " W "

Have you guys been here before

Plug in your existing tyre alloy / size and then the one you want and see if its going to be suitable Also, you can check out other sizes of tyres that will equate to the same rolling radius within 2.5% (you can mod that figure to be more precise).

Mods - is this / can this be made a sticky or added to FAQs

:)

Hi you may have found from the above sites but when you increase the diameter by an inch you also need to increase the width by 1 size too, so the standard Fab VRs being on 205/45/16 the correct tyre in 17" should be 215/40/17...

hope this helps

Chris

Why would you need to incrase the width it you increase the diameter?

If the wheel remains the same width it makes no difference.

Not sure I agree totally, as VAG states that if you go from 17" to 18" alloys , then you go 225-45-17 tyres to 225-40-18 tyres. Up 1" in alloys size but tyre width remains the same.

I guess you need to also know the change in width of the alloys. Are the 16" VRs alloys 6.5", 7" or 7.5" (not likley) and are the new 17" alloys 7" or 7.5" wide.

On a 7" wide alloy, going from 16" to 17" and from a 205-45 to a 215-40 tyre, you are actually 2% larger in terms of rolling radius. Which means almost 1.5mph faster at 70mph than speedo indicates (if in fact anyones speedo was measuring accurately)

The optimum tyre change at 17" is 225-35 or 235-30, which is cloest to 205-45!!

Its all academic in the real world as speedo never read true at 70mph and by the time you've worn the tyres to the limit you tyre is over 12mm smaller diameter than when you started!

:)

WTF?? I know I am ill, but please someone help me, I replied in this thread, I know I did, where's it gone??

don't be silly christopher, why on earth would you need to change the width of a tyre just because the diameter of the wheel has changed.

you can keep the same width but you will have to drop the height of the sidewall to keep the overall diameter correct as that is all that counts for speedo accuracy.

Erm... don't know where you got that info from, but the table below should show that you're wrong...

Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/Mile Difference
205/45-16 3.6in 11.6in 23.3in 73.1in 867 0.0%
205/40-17 3.2in 11.7in 23.5in 73.7in 860 0.8%
215/40-17 3.4in 11.9in 23.8in 74.7in 848 2.2%

So if 205/45R16 is the original size, then the size for a 17" is 205/40...

Very true Rog, its just we have found on a TT Comp wheel a 215 just is a little less stretched and looks better.

Depends if you like the stretched look or not ;)

TT Comps - are they 7.5" wide. What is the width of the 16" standard VRs alloys?

:)

6.5 iirc, its in the Fabia wheel thread.

6.5 iirc, its in the Fabia wheel thread.

I'm guessing then that then with the TT comps being 7.5" wide the 205s would look a bit stretched if you went up by 1" in width.

But then again, even tho the 215-40-17 are 13mm bigger in diameter than the 205-45-16, and 8mm bigger than the 205-40-17, when you 1/2 way thru the life of the tyres that differential evaporates compared to a new 205-45-16.

So, in effect you'd be at the right size of tyre when you've scrubbed of 4-6mm of tread

;)

I've just purchased 205/40/17 for my Octy 17's.

Got Pirelli P Zero Nero ZR rated for £66 each from www.Mytyres.co.uk. I do have to find somewhere to fit them now.

PS C&S do Toyo T1R's for £85 fitted each in 215/40/17 if you're interested.

would a 205/45/17 size tyre fit on the vrs?

would a 205/45/17 size tyre fit on the vrs?

It would fit... but it would be too big in terms of rolling raduis. So, you'd actually be travelling faster than your speedo would be showing .......... not good in todays camera infested country!

Stick with

205-45-16 on 16" alloys, and or 205-40-17 on 17" alloys

Lummox, did you have 215/40 17's on your TT comps, I just changed from 205's and i'm sure i hear a slight scuff when driving fast round bumpy bends?

I had 205's on them, no scuffing etc.

Xav has since put 215's on and I think they look better for it.

I agree much beefier and actually feels better on the road, maybe have to look at coilovers instead of shocks/springs

with 17"s on the fabia (vrs) 205/40/17 is the way to go as they are only 0.82 % different in rolling radius, so ehen your travelling at 50mph you are only doing 50.41mph :) check out www.tyretraders.com/tyrecalc.html for wheelarch difference etc....

p.s. i was told to run tyres at 35psi any thought on this quote?

One thought peeps... Tyre load index...

Anyone checked these?
