Major help with 64 Octavia VRS Stereo needed!

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have decided to by an Octavia VRS Estate TSI on a 64 plate, to compliment my wife's Fabia VRS TSI.  LOVE IT!

However, I was told by the dealer I bought it from that the screen for the MIB had been replaced by the previous owner to an aftermarket one and it was not working.  The stereo, DAB, SD Slot etc all work but without the screen I cannot access any menus, connect BT etc etc.  I can just change the source etc from the steering wheel.

I do not know what the car should have had or how to fix.  I have a unit in the glove box with a CD and SD slot and if I pull it out, I have a quad plug going into another one which splits a load of cables off, one half go into the back of the quad socket on that unit the rest go to the screen comprising of 2 small white plugs, a larger one, the gps antenna and the aerial.

What part do I need to replace the screen?  I think it is an after market Columbus unit (it looks identical to all the new cars at the dealer) but I cannot find any for a sale that are just the screen without the cd at the top and a lot of stereo behind it (this is just a screen and about 3" thick).

Please help, what do I need to buy to make it work (I would ideally like na AV feed so I can wire in the reversing camera which is not standard).

Thanks, Pics:

I wouldn't buy it without the dealer sorting the issue first.

Edit: Looks like you already bought it... :x

Sound like you just need the screen ! Go to Skoda and ask them for P/N......

Yeah, sale of goods, it should be working shouldn't it ? What kind of ****ty dealer is this ?

Yep already bought got a nice discount on top of the already negotiated one..  Just need a solution....!

Does anyone know what the screen is called etc?  Where can I get one other than Skoda?

Try Superskoda but, otherwise it's a main dealer part.

On the upside, at least you'll get a better idea of how great a deal you really got !

Thanks, had a look but they don't list anything.  Looks like I will have to wait until Tuesday then.  The various warnings are driving me nuts, I currently have a winter tyres warning, a low tyre pressure warning and the Bluetooth is constantly trying to connect to old phones!!

It could very well be that the screen is not the problem here. Someone already tried changing the screen and it still doesn't work (or the dealers bullsh!tting) so the problem could well be further into the system. Also at a 14 plate this would be generally covered by warranty, so if someone has gone outside the warranty then it could well be that it's been damaged somehow, and replacing the screen with a second hand working one hasn't fixed it.

The system is covered with Component Protection as well, so any new parts will need to be fitted and connected to Skoda HQ to enable them to work correctly.

I smell something here, and I wouldn't like to put a price on having it repaired.

The screen that is in is an aftermarket one.  I am guessing the orig owner upgraded it so they could have HDMI in and a lot more freedom.  However this screen has now failed (prob a very cheap one) so I am looking to replace it.  What I replace it with is what I am after...  Got to be honest wish I had just got them to replace the screen which they offered to do!!

FYI the dealer I bought the car from is on the other side of the country.

Thanks

As you have a CD slot and 1 SD card slot it looks like the car came with an MIB1 Bolero radio as standard.

MIB2 systems came in 2015 and deleted the cd slot.

If the car had sat nav, amundsen or Columbus it would have 2 SD slots.

It will be difficult to get it working, component theft protection etc, you'll need someone with VCDS to help you.

Return the car if you can and buy one that hasnt been messed with.

That unit is odd, I have never seen one before. The buttons are completely different to what you get on a Bolero or Amundsen/Columbus.

If you can get a screen and remove all the aftermarket stuff there's a good chance it'll all work.

Thanks, what made me unsure about the Bolero was that on the back there is only one socket (back of bolero below) for the larger of the 3 white plugs pictured in mine above.  What do I do with the other 2 and there is also a black one that is not pictured that is not plugged into anything?

The standard screen has 2 connectors on it:

1 black multi plug

1 MOST plug to communicate with the mib unit

The additional unit on your second picture must be something to do with the aftermarket equipment that's been installed and looks to have a DAB antenna attached.

How great a deal is this. It would have to IRO £2k to save this kind of hassle ? I don't buy a car at this price point to be full of headaches, I want it RIGHT.

Though it sounds they were at least throwing you a bone offering to fix it but you declined for some reason ? (trying to save money)? Was it really worth it, sorry playing devils advocate ?

Might be worth just having an honest chat with them and maybe if you settle the pre-discounted original price they could just sort it for you if you left the car with you? Depends how much you are talking about, you are guarding this information so far.

You could subtly hint that you'd expect the car to work as is and it was an undocumented verbal agreement in regard to the stereo that was a misunderstanding that it could just be easily enabled or something.

I'm pretty sure you'd have the law on your side in regard to the state of the car. Its starting to give me headaches and I didn't but the car.

I really think you might consider trying to save money over having the car right as a mistake IMO, but if you do try and fix it also then best of luck with that anyway.

I can only see one 'hole' on the back of the standard screen and from the looks of it, that is where the larger of the 3 white plugs would go.  The other is the aerial?  The black plug I have (not currently connected) is the more of a standard VW connector and black, unless this is the most plug?  What am I missing?  Is the confusion I face because of an aftermarket loom in the car?  Does the DAB go through black one then?

In answer to your point VRSANT, the garage is on the other side of the country and going back is not an option.  For me, I bought a car with an issue they were upfront about and I got a discount to cover the cost of a replacement screen.  I don't feel they have done anything worth complaining about, although in hindsight I should have taken then up on the offer of a replaced screen, especially seen as it appears I will now have to pay for someone to program a replacement in.  I also did not realise that in one facelift they had made the system so complicated.  In my older VAG cars I have simply replaced the units with better aftermarket ones..  My wife's fabia VRS has a fantastic system that does all the car set up stuff, maxi dot, steering controls, tells me engine revs, ltrs of fuel in the tank, doors open, seatbelts on etc, but also allowed me to add front parking sensors, rear camera, Bluetooth and loads more if I want.  All for £250, this was my intention with this car but it has not panned out as the systems are not available for this later type (and shape) of unit yet (well not decent ones anyway as this proves).

The white plugs are part of the aftermarket kit.

The black plug is the standard wiring from the car to the screen.

The most connector is the white plug that looks similar to an aerial connector.

The dab runs through the mib unit in the glove box.

There are only ever 2 connections on the standard screen and that's the same regardless of spec.

The screen in your first set of pictures is completely aftermarket and need to be disregarded.

Thank you, so the only plug not currently plugged into anything is the proper one!  I have managed to get a bolero screen for £130 so hoping it works, but even if I have pay someone £20 to vcds it in, I am still ok money wise!

Thanks for all your help.  Anyone want to buy an aftermarket screen, slightly used? :-)

Yes that's right and you shouldn't need VCDS, the screens are plug and play.

Once you get the replacement screen it should become apparent what connectors to where, you'll most likely have to dig about some more to remove the aftermarket wiring once you have seen the factory connections.

I think there is another aftermarket module buried in the car that has TV and DVD based on what I can see on the back of the aftermarket screen.

Now that's sorted can a reversing camera be added to the bolero? :-)

I know it can if you have the kenwood upgrade but not sure on the standard unit.

  • Author

Ok thanks, may just wait until I can afford to replace with the Kenwood.  I'll get nav as well then.  They are doing at my local Skoda dealer for £599 fitted at the mo.  Maybe something to consider...

They're a decent upgrade to be fair. The nav has lots of useful features including tmc and its fully tested to work with the factory kit.
