not sure on the oil specs of your car,

but skoda do a fixed price on brake fluid change it around £56

Gearboxes are "sealed for life", so routine oil changes aren't necessary.

You can either get gear oil from a skoda dealer but likely to be expensive. ECP and the likes will also tell you which fluid to get if you type your reg number in.

You've clearly not done a gear oil change on a manual gearbox that is "sealed for life". The oil is usually very black by 60-80k miles.

I replaced the gearbox oil on my 2008 octavia vrs & the old oil was 6 years old & had covered 55,000 miles & there was a big improvement with the gearchange afterwards & still is 2 years later, the old oil was black & dirty,i got my oil from my local dealer as id had problems with getting the correct oil for my old vrs & had to drain out the oil again & refill with the oil from the dealer so i personally will only get genuine gear oil from my local dealer, some have a mineral oil & some have synthetic in the gearboxes,I dont know what spec you should have but just call in at your local dealer & quote your reg & they should get you the correct spec."Sealed for life" is a load of rubbish in my opinion as is extended intervals for engine oil changes.  :D

There should be a code stamped on the bottom of the gearbox. That will let the dealer know which oil, (mineral or synthetic) to give you.

I think in general the 6 speed boxes are the synthetic but worth checking. The oils are the same spec.

That's what manufacturers tell us so we believe it. I have no idea why they went down this route because I've never heard of oil that never needs changed!!

Because "life" in the manufacturers eyes is three years/100,000 miles... which in fairness is about right for a gear oil change... but most cars are used long past this time.

I just know when I changed the gear oil on my previous seat Cordoba PD130 6 speed it was dark, brown and sludgy. The new oil made it feel like a new gearbox!

I've changed my box oil on my last 3 cars all vag and i agree it made a big difference to mine as well. However i do believe they actually mean the entire life of the gearbox. Nowhere in the service book can i find a schedule for changing it.

There is no interval for changing the fuel filter on petrol models as well......madness!....i replaced mine when my car was 5 years old & cut it open & it was full of muck & the fuel that came out of it was brown yet there is no mention of replacing it in the service schedule.  :notme:

I changed the fuel filter on my diesel astravan recently. I did it 30,000 miles ago.

It was literally black. For the cost of them I am now doing them every 10,000 miles on my van and the VRS.

I read a while ago on various posts about people using 3rd party gear oil and getting clunky gear changes. That's why I used the VAG stuff. Had no issues. I am changing the gear oil every 50,000 miles and I do the oil (Shell Helix 507 spec) and filter every 5000 miles.

Anyone know the spec and qty of engine oil for a full service?

And is the gear box easy to do anyone know the location of the fill and empty cap?

Its just under 5 litres of engine oil for the 170 CR. I cant remember the amount for the gear oil. I think it was easy enough to see and get into the gearbox drain and level plugs.

I got a 500ml syringe type thing and put a bit of plastic tubing on the nozzle to fill the gearbox from below. Pretty straight forward.

This type of thing:

Box capacity i think is around 2.2 litres so best to buy 3 bottles. I can highly recommend fuchs gear oil. Better than origina in my opinion.

Engine oil - less than 5l but you can buy that 5l canister and leave the rest till the next time. 5W-30 will be just fine but don't forget that your car has got DPF and it needs oil that is designed for use with this filter - I think it was 507.00.

About gearbox - I used ~2,1l of oil for my 6 gear gearbox. I used some Fuchs Syntofluid and I believe it was the only one suitable for the gearbox.

Note: after the gearbox oil change I didn't feel any improvements. For me it was like an oil change for engine - you don't feel any difference but you have done good for your car.

I got the impression from several posts that the VAG gear oil was the best for the Skoda's. I do however use the Fuchs Sintofluid 75w80 in my van as Vauxhall put power steering fluid in at the factory and the M32 gearbox is made of cheese. 95,000 miles on the van and no gearbox failure yet.

What spec Fuchs gear oil should be used in the VRS?

Gearboxes are "sealed for life", so routine oil changes aren't necessary.

That's if you expect the life to be around 200,000km and are willing to put up with lousy gear changes for the last 70k-50k.

They should be done every 60,000km-80,000km

This spring I had my 2012 1.6TDI serviced and I asked the mech to check for the brake fluid too, as per Skoda info it should be changed after 3 years (every 2 years, afterward) and mine already was 4y old.

The mech checked it with some sort of instrument (an hygrometer, I suppose, to check for humidity retention) and said it was perfect and not worthwile of being changed, so we left it alone. Maybe I'm going to change it on the next service, just for the sake of it.

Iirc it was 75w90 hopefully someone can confirm. Going by my own experience with changing box oil I've done it on my last three cars. Mk1 Octy Vrs, mk2 Octy vrs tdi, Seat Leon FR petrol. I know the mk1 was the 5 speed box the other two 6 speed. I used the Fuchs on the mk1 and vag oil on the other two. The gear change on the mk1 Octavia was seamless. Way better than the other two. Even cold it was perfect. 1st to 2nd usually notchy completely gone. And that car had done over 120k when i sold it.

Good link even states the P/N it covers. That's the oil i used and highly recommend it.

Gearboxes are sealed for life, unless you speak to the people who make them, who suggest every 50k miles.

Having had it done every 50k miles on my MK2, I can tell you it's pretty manky at that interval and I'd change it just for piece of mind.

I've not changed the gearbox oil on my VRS in the 5 years & 80k+ miles I've had it. Car is now on 155k and all the gears engage easily. I might change the gearbox oil - partly for good measure and partly because I'm curious if I'll be able to notice any difference.

My rule of thumb for gearbox oil is to only use genuine stuff though. I've heard of people using non-genuine and it actually making the gearbox worse (even the same spec oil as the genuine stuff). The gearbox oil is not usually expensive from the dealer (and actually cheaper than some other oils) and I don't think it's worth the risk of an expensive gearbox repair when you can be sure the genuine stuff will be fine.

No way on earth will a gearbox break just because genuine oil hasn't been used. As long as the correct specification oil is used it won't cause any harm. It's like saying if a manufacturer recommends mobil oil and castrol is used the engine will blow up!! No.
