Using a Yeti for Towing

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am considering buying a Yeti to tow a horse trailer, trailer would be registered for 1800kg gross.

Does anyone use their Yeti to tow a horse or cattle trailer?

Which bhp Yeti do you use and would you recommend it? Is it a 4X4?

Do you tow with a non 4X4? if so how well does it cope?

Many thanks

I think the Skoda spec is 1500 - 2100kg  but a more reasonable figure might be around 1300Kg.

The Yeti has a kerbweight of 1535kg, which gives an 85% match figure of 1305kg. The towball limit is 80kg.

I don't tow now but there are plenty of people on the forum who do and will be able to give you good advice.

seem to recall twoladies tows a horse box, maybe she will be along shortly or do a name/subject search or pm her!

What will the actual weight be?

Hi, I tow a horse trailer with a 140bhp 4x4. Copes very well with the weight of 2 ponies

According to the manual the 4x4 Yeti's have a towing braked max of between 1800kg and 2100kg depending on engine.

I tow a 1300kg caravan with mine and find it copes very well. I went for the 170bhp version specifically to make sure I had enough torque to pull the caravan and also it comes with a bigger brake set up to make stopping more surefooted. No problem there too. If you are towing a horse box then it is fair to assume you would be going off road occasionally if you do gymkhanas and the like so would go for the 4x4 version, that with some mud and snow tyres would be a good combination.

Ian.

Hi I own  a " Innovan Caravan " http://www.innovan.com.au/price-specification",

+ Yeti 4x4 2.0 L Diesel auto.

Had to pickup Caravan @ Toowoomba Qld  and drive to Brisbane coming off the Peak of the Range,

my Mate said to me do you know what speed your doing, He didn't know

Said No, looked down at speedo nearly Sh"t myself, 138 km/hr/ 86 mph,

as far as I aware had been doing that for 45/60 minutes.

Have done a lot of towing nothing ever felt as good as this.

My "Yeti" and My "Penguin" are an unimportant  part of my life.

Yeti SE 140bhp 4x4 63 plate

Swift twin axle caravan mptm 1850kg

No power issues on hills such as woodhead pass

No stability issues on any road including motorways ( but I am careful to drive to weather n road conditions and maintain a sensible speed).

Welcome to the forum.

What will be the actual weight of the Trailer with a Horse or Livestock in and is the Vehicle / Trailer Combination going into fields or on farm tracks that are not pisted?

Do you currently tow a horse box like you want to use a Yeti to tow?

^ ^ An innovan clone available here in NW France, seem to be lots around and about here!!- Mainly surfers, with 'em stashed on top!

I haven't been caravanning very long but did a lot of research before I bought a van and isn't your combination illegal?

I should add, i'm asking a genuine question not having a pop as i'm pulling a van of 1355kg mtplm with a 1.4tsi 4X4 and was met with a lot of negative comments about if the car was up to the job.

No as I do not exceed total gross train weight - max towing capacity is 2000kg of my yeti.

But it does exceed kerb weight and I'm sure plenty will be along shortly to tell me so!

It isn't illegal, but it does go against the advice of all the caravaning experts.

Agreed, the Caravan Club etc. still recommend the 85% rule as well as getting the nose weight correct. When I used to tow we kept inside these limits and had no issues, but as has been said before, I've seen plenty of car/van combinations snaking down the road or in a ditch to make me think that they are still correct.  I'd think that towing livestock would make this 'rule' even more applicable?

SWMBO has the Yeti (170tdi 4x4) to pull her horse box (Ifor Williams) with two horses and it copes fine, we see a lot more at shows these days pulling boxes,

It's a joy to drive, I could do with a bigger boot sometimes :)

Never had it snake or feel unstable, even with coaches zipping past at far in excess of speed limit

Never been on grass verge, let alone ditch

Been towing trailers of all sizes for 30 years - guess the experts know better than I

@BillBham, I'm very pleased for you but it still does not change the advice that the various 'experts' give and have done for many years. Surely, it's not just about driving stability but the ability to brake safely and in a controlled way? It's also like most advice 'experts' give people either decide to take or leave it.

Oh dear!!

Yes, the experts do probably know better than you because they look at the whole situation and not just your's.

And to be honest it is similar to the comment "I've never had an accident, but I've seen plenty behind me"

Yes, I had a tow bar fitted to my Yeti last year.

Only problem is that I haven't towed with it yet :D !!

Spent a fortune on my trailer and bought a new Yeti - and not been out with it.  Floored by various personal problems and laminitus :p

Love the car, its 170bhp auto 4x4.  I am sure that this powerful animal will tow my Connie in my Indespension trailer, perfectly.  However, I only tow one in a lightweight trailer and so far, never had a problem in 17 years with my 2.00 Primera and not expecting any with the Yeti.  But I am very careful and still practice putting the DSG into manual for going downhill - waiting for the time we can actually take the pony out.

What is the weight of the trailer and 2 horses being towed?

The OP did say it would weigh up to 1800kg I wouldn't be phased by that weight, more concerned about the horses moving in the back.

Moodyfan

As well as the advice from others i.e. 4x4 and the more powerful engines also bear in mind that the 4x4s have a 6 speed gearbox rather than the 5 speed of the 2WD which will be better for towing.

The OP said the trailer would be registered for 1,800 kg Gross.

No idea if that means plated for that.

Being phased by what the Gross weight is with Horse or Horses is exactly what phases many when pulled into a roadside check.

Often held near Markets and Horse events.
