I swapped my second mk2 vRS for a mk3 230 earlier this year. Other cars considered at the time were the golf R estate and the leon cupra st 280.

Since i got my 230 in March i've seen maybe another 4 or 5 230's on the road so they are pretty rare cars, and in comparison i've seen maybe two golf R estates.

BUT.. no Leon Cupras! .. and i don't just mean i've not seen the estate (ST) version - i've not even seen ANY hatchbacks either!?

Where are they all?

Was the draw of low price lease deals for golf R hatchbacks just too much and everyone in that market plumped for the vw? Or is it just that people balked at the price of the leon given it's image isn't "premium" like the vw and the interior is comparatively low rent?

For me, the decision was a chunk of brand loyalty built up in my previous Mk2 VRS PD170 and also that there just aren't any SEAT dealers near to me......

Seen a few Cupras (hatch and estate), but drive quite a few miles.

The reason why there are so many Golf Rs about is the fact that the leases are low because their residual value will be good in 2 or 3 years time; I doubt the same can be said for the Cupra or VRS.

I'd previously been slightly put off with some of the 'lesser quality' items on Seat cars but after test driving one, was totally smitten with the handling. Anyway, it's still a VAG car so can't be all that bad!

 

There's been no luck with my Cupra spotting either. :(

There's a used hatch sat on Horton Seat's forecourt, or there was a couple of weeks ago

There were quite a few at the 'ring earlier this month as well as the "sub8" pack ones cant remember seeing any on the road yet

Give it another 12 months, this time last year was the stonking lease deals on the Golf R, hence there being plenty out on the road now.

 

The SEAT deals right now on the 290 are as good if not better than the old Golf PCH offers so they'll soon get a little more popular.

We decided that we needed a medium-sized estate & I would have prefered a vRS 230, but we were offered a really good deal on a Golf R so that's what we bought.

 

I did want to make a comparison with a Leon Cupra ST, but SWMBO wouldn't consider it, the interior ambiance was just too cheap for her & the probable residuals were not too good either.

The problem is there are/were stonking deals on 290 black edition but you can't get them anymore as similar to vrs230 they pulled the plug on them 18th September so lots of the the people who went through lease company's to get one are now struggling to get build number/dates

I wouldn't know how to recognise one vs a regular FR but I have seen one. He was sitting at some lights and was still doing a few mph as they turned green so I floored it. He took that as a challenge and disappeared off into the distance.

Guy was collecting a white 290 hatch in Nottingham on Saturday when OH collected her Ibiza.

 

Dealership was running an ST/Estate version as a demo.

Maybe people in the market for a 290bhp hot model maybe want to pay the extra for the 4wd dsg golf? Despite being a VAG car on MQB the SEAT does still struggle with an image crisis.

 

I'm only speculating and basing any purchasing decisions that I would make being in the same position

agree the price differential isn't much and the golf gets great reviews and has a more acceptable image for the er.. older demographic (i'm talking about myself here btw).

Hits nail on head, IMVHO.

 

As for the older demographic, I've has a bus pass for 9 years & next year I have to persuade myself ( + DVLA) that I should still be driving!
