That little "ASR" button and dashboard light.......

Featured Replies

You know the one, the yellow triangle with a circle in the middle that flashes when you lose traction because you're driving like a berk.

What is it precisely that triggers it though? Does it monitor actual wheel slippage, or is it based on transmission slip?

I wonder because tootling in to work this morning, in the wet (as usual for round here!) it started flashing and cutting power between 1700-2500rpm, in any gear between 2 and 4..... acceleration was a no-no.

So, either i was driving through the biggest diesel spill i've ever encountered, or something else is wrong........suggestions? worst case - clutch slipping already?

Happened me on a wet road the other night in 5th gear. Standing water and very little tread probably caused that though.

Treads ok. only got the tyres when i got my alloys (less than a year). I'd say at least 5mm of tread left. Not even close to being a problem.

Just see how this evenings journey goes - some nice straight roads to see how it reacts to being poked a little.

I much prefer the little car skidding symbol, much prettier! :P

I find ASR quite unpredictable - sometimes I boot it and it will cut all power, other times it will just allow an amount of wheelspin - I don't get it.

I don't know what it measures, but my money is on it monitoring wheel speeds in relation to each other.

I'd love to know if there was some uprated software available... :rubchin:

ASR measures differences in wheel speeds using the ABS sensors.

@ Tom - you little hooligan...lol...

@ eddyH - thanks for that. Least i can relax and put the clutch replacement off for another 10,000miles...... lmao

Spot on my man

(also how tyre pressure monitoring works aswell dont you know).

Mine is always confused, so i switch it off.

I usually get on well with mine.

Must have taken umbrage at being tanked up at tesco instead of shell diesel.....lol

yep.. called "driving lessons"

i did have a bit of a mess earlier.. and for the sake of those who cant drive without triggering it.. its pretty useful in icey conditions.. with it on, it quickly reigns in and controls the wheelspin... if its off and the wheels light up, the engine hits the limiter, and even if you take your foot off the gas, takes up to a second for the heavy engine+drivetrain to spin down so the wheels regain traction.. so thats an extra second you could be understeering towards a wall... or a field in toms case :D

No, my traction control is always off so I don't have a clue what you are on about.

anyway I though that was the point, try to get the light on as much as possible.

Mine's always off too. I have no choice in the matter at the moment. So if I have slippage I just leave the wheels spinning madly, revs holding at 4000rpm+, until the wheels catch up and its safe to go into 3rd. :D

If I ever get ASR back I wonder what it will be like.

Jeff? Reach for the sky? ;)

Having just got my '03 Octy vRS on Saturday, I'm still coming to terms to the traction control.

Does the light always come on when it cut in?

I've had a few times now when I've floored it in second or third and the power has come in then dropped and then come back in again, basically like a yo-yo effect. Is this normal?

My old car was only a 1.6 Fiesta Zetec-S, but that used to pull alot better below 1,500 rpm, a right little rev hungry monster. Obviously the vRS obilterates it above 2,000 rpm, but I still can't get over the apparent lack of power below that.

Thanks

The light comes on when the traction control cuts in, and is always on when the traction control is turned off.

The power problem is down to the fact that it is a turbo engine and the power does not kick in until then.
