Speeding on Motorways

Featured Replies

...

I personally would like to see a variable 80mph on Motorways & Dual carriageways (less on busy stretches) BUT zero tolerance above (a couple of Mph Max for spedo error). I would also like to see more stretches of dual carriageway (even if limited to 70mph).

Variable limits were introduced on the M42 a while back' date=' and last time I went through they were working OK. Provided drivers know [i']why[/i] they are being slowed down, they are happy to reduce speed and keep moving, rather than sprinting from queue to queue.

I think that now we have the technology to do it (i.e. remotely-set illuminated signs), variable limits should be the norm and the objective of the traffic engineers should be maintaining the flow in order to improve throughput, keep tempers cool and reduce pollution from stop/start motoring.

The variable limits dont work so well on the M25, thats still a bl**dy car park at the best of times!!

Improve the quality, reliability and value of public transport first, then when the roads are a bit quieter think about raising limits slightly. (can't see it happening in my lifetime)

Last time I was on the exact same road, Bryan, (last Friday) they were not working very well at all. For some mysterious reason they alternated between 50mph and 60mph pretty much all the way through the variable limit section - rather annoying as people kept slowing and speeding and completely the opposite of what the system is supposed to achieve.
NOOOOOO! I've found out I'm my own nemisis! NOOOOOO!

I had moved in to 2nd lane to overtake car that then overtook someone else' date=' Honest.[/quote']

hehe! OK, I'll believe you...this time!!
