Okay, so this is a bit "out there", if you will, but could a Mk2 Octavia VRS TD be retrofitted with AWD and a larger TDI engine; say a 3.0 V6? 

 

I understand that such a conversion is obviously within the realms of possibility if budget was not an issue. But could it be done with relatively few custom-machined parts? For example, could you take the AWD system from a Golf V6 4-Motion and place it on an Octavia? I guess what I'm asking is, could such a thing be done without going over the edge on budget. Say, £10,000?

 

Just so we are clear, I realise that there is no strictly "practical" reason for someone to do this if the issue is simply performance. It's something I would do for its own sake; a vanity project. I also like the look of the Octavia, of course.  

MkII's an A5 (PQ 35) platform so I guess you'd need to be looking at something like a MkV Golf or AUDI A3 MkII platform. IIRC SEAT also did a 4WD Altea on the same platform?

Check the wheel measurements centre to centre front to back and left to right.

Of coarse it can be done, anything can.

 

As to budget, do you have the skills and the tools and are doing the work are are you intending paying others to do the actual work after you source the donor vehicle and all the parts?

 

Why not just start with a Superb with the right engine and drivetrain and then tune that?

 

But we are not supposed to ask why anymore on Briskoda so just go for it and keep us updated.

All you need to do is change the engine, suspension, running gear and body.

A scout or 4x4 octavia would be a good starting point. A vrs would need a lot of work to the body as well as new fuel system before you could start fitting the 4wd system.

185bhp from the 2.0 BMM is easily done with a Stage 1 so yes I'd envisage north of 200 is relatively straightforward with a few tweaks and a Stage 2.  The current 3.0 TDI does about 240BHP IIRC so not that far off albeit the V6 does sound very nice.

 

The main problem I'm guessing is drivetrain layout.  The 2.0 are transverse but I 'think' the 3.0 are all longitudinal...

No way I could entertain doing it myself. As for the Superb, I think the first model with 4WD is the B8 (2015), which only has a 2.0 TDI engine and would cost the earth just to buy. 

 

The problem with the Scout is that it's, well, a Scout. I know Audi like to tune up their station wagons, but I cringe at the very thought. 

 

I would basically have to hand the car over to a person/garage/company with all the requisite skills and say goodbye for a few weeks (months?). My aim would be a VRS oil burner capable of keeping up with the 550d M sport xDrives of the world (a particular obsession of mine), which would mean horsepower in the 390 - 400 range. There is no way I'm going to get that out of a two-litre engine unless I ask McLaren to rebuild it. Also, horsepower like that would be of little use in a front-wheel-drive car. It's hard enough getting off the line with the 168 I have. The only non-BMW TD engine I could see pulling that off would be the VAG twin-turbo 3.0 V6, which is 326 BHP unmolested. 

 

I think there is something divine about taking a car no one expects all that much from and turning it into a dark horse. If I just wanted to kill BMWs in broad daylight, I'd borrow my fiends RS7 and have done with it (I've already done it once, but it's just not the same). And if money was no object at all, I'd pay someone to pull a V12 TDi out of a Q7 and have them build a Mk2 Golf around it. So the compromise will have to be somewhere in between. I think 4WD and a V6 TDI in a VRS would do the trick nicely.

Then £10,000 is likely not enough for you to have a business build your dream and have it Tested and ready to go on the road.

 

When you find someone that is willing to build it and not want paid up front then let us know please.

 

Maybe just go for a 'Much Cheapness' Sleeper.

The MKII Superb was available with the 2.0 TDI and AWD.

 

I think a better base car to go nuts with would be a MKII 4x4 Octavia with the 1.8T, you can get ridiculous figures from that engine.

Have you been reading boss fox threads?  Citigogo and the yeti twins and vrs.   Intriguing to see someone push a car so far rather than buy something else, but I'm sure he has spent a little over £10k.

I know gasoline engines are far more "tuneable", both as a practical and technical matter. I am, however, a diesel head to the core. 

 

I've been having a look at the Darkside Developments website to get some idea of what can be done with a 2.0 TDI engine, and have to say that I've been somewhat inspired. According to their grid for hybrid turbo upgrades to the PD 170, the GTB2566VK charger (35psi) has a power output of 340 BHP. I'm assuming that actually achieving such a level would require an uprated single-mass flywheel conversion, a new head, valves, springs, cam shaft, etc, as well as a FMIC. Not to mention, bigger brakes. DPF would also probably have to go. The parts come to around £5,000. Would fitting all this cost around the same?

And £800 will buy a nitrous oxide kit for that occasional, straight-line encounter with a 550d M-Sport. :-) 

As said, anything is possible with the right skills and tool kit. There is a guy on FB at the moment building a Lancer Evo powered Ford Ka - including the 4wd system - at home, on his drive!

 

Ideally you would need to scour the salvage yards for a donor that has been lightly rolled, impact damage front, rear or side wouldn't be much good, as you will need things like transmission tunnels and mounting points to be square, or something that has been flood damaged or lightly panel damaged/broken glass/ vandalised. As long as the underneath is straight, then there is your template. Plenty of 80's Escorts were converted to RWD power in the 90's for rallying using Sierra running gear and floor pans.

Octavia II is basically Golf IV/V chassis so theoretically it might be done.

 

2.0TDi engine on Octavia is already catastrophe and my tires usually last max. 8000km...well if I drove as average driver, perhaps 10k km. Well, who buys RS and rives as family lost on shopping trip, right?

 

Imagine installing 6 cylinders TDi ;-) It would be as Skoda Felicia 1.9TDi...you would replace bushing, dampers, springs very often.

 

Don't be fooled sir as most people in this forum...VAG/Skoda doesn't and never produced AWD ;-) It is just software magic and Haldex clutch.

 

AWD have Subarus, Mitsubishi and some Audi executive models with real QUATTRO mechanical system ;-)

 

It is some sort of 4WD system that works only if your car has momentum...you must never stop though. It reminds me some snow fun at Glenshee pass with my old Subaru Impreza GL...I was sliding McRae style around 4motion Golf idiots who thought they have AWD ;-) They were on one place, all wheels spinning and disco light on dashboard.

 

There was a guy in Czech Republic who rebuilt Skoda Fabia RS 4x4 for hillclimb racing.

 

Just to summarise your vision:

 

  • upgrade of front suspension...perhaps Reiger suspension for poor from Protlum.cz...2000€
  • upgrade bushing to Powerflex black series - I think I paid about 500€
  • lots of time for testing and experimenting
  • guy I mentioned (Fabia RS 4x4) was CNC Machinist and racing driver I believe so he could do 80% by himself
  •  rear suspension carrier is most likely same except the last part where bearings and wheel is mounted
  • new exhaust system because it goes exactly in the middle of car where you need propeller shafts
  • most likely different gearbox (car breakers in Czech Rep sell it for about 1000€)
  • I have no idea how they have changed gearbox and front carrier in order to fit transmission for Haldex and shafts to the rear axle.
  • maybe there is even different engine block in order to accommodate different gearbox and Haldex

I think it is cheaper to buy Subaru Impreza, the only racing car for public with unlimited potential for modifications ;-)
