Dirty Rear End ???

Featured Replies

Is it just VRS's or do all Fabia's rear end get mucky really easy ?

I've fitted mud flaps but its made no difference. Is it the shape of the Fabia rear end, is it the spoiler on the vrs or what ?

Has anybody removed or replaced the VRS spoiler ? has it made any difference ?

I seem to remember years ago there used to be hatchback areofoil type attachments that were attached to the vertical edge of the hatch and that was supposed to change / disrupt the air flow and thus reduce mucky rear ends etc. does anybody remember them ? used them ? or does anybody know of anything that might reduce the muck thats dumped on the rear of the vrs ? as its really driving me mad in this weather...

Yes, they get very mucky, very quick. Guess thats why they stuck a washer/wipe on the back?

Subscribed to this thread - It's incredible how much crud gets onto the back of the car - mudflaps have been ordered (should be able to pick them up sometime next week now so I can fit them) but apart from protecting against some stones hitting the paintwork I'm not expecting much either :(

I don't think the spoiler will make much, if any, difference though, the dirt is coming from the rear skirt and gets sucked upwards.

Another related question is whether lowering the car will make this problem even worse?

yep all fabias are the same, most of it will be soot though. Being lowered doesn't seem to make it any better or worse.

I've found most of the crap is just road crud. I've got no rear mudflaps, or even front mudflaps. Just general muck seems to get kicked up, and the aerodynamics (or lack of it ;)) sucks it on to the boot.

I think it's with it having a flat a$$ there's almost a vacuum as it goes along, sucking airborne crud to the back - Golfs, Estates and other flat a$$ hatches do it too.

The Fabia hatch is pretty bad for getting a mucky ****. I suspect it's the stubby aerodynamics that cause it. Go on a wet motorway and to stand a chance of seeing behind you you need the rear wiper switched on permanently. I think mudflaps would help to an extent with road spray from the fat tyres on the vRS, but the aero properties will still attract the spray onto the tailgate. Golf's etc seem to suffer with the same type of problem.

I wonder if the saloon and combi have the same issue?

When I don't see thru rear window, it's time to wash the whole thing clean IMO.

That would be every 15 miles over here in winter then! :thumbdwn:

Side I get general road crap and crud, and on he rear screen, but the bumper is 90% soot, maybe it's just mine :o

Interesting - my Elegance didn't suffer from this at all. It did have rear mud flaps (or rear mud little bits of plastic) on and also had the stock downturned exhaust which may have saved it, or I might just have been driving too slowly to get anything to stick....

Chris

Interestingly, the Octavia hatch is the opposite - you need the rear wash/wipe when moving slowly in rain. Once you're up to speed you can switch it off!

I quite like it looking mucky, almost as looking sparklingly clean...

Gives extra satisfaction after an hour of loving washing!

You can watch this happening on the motorway. The typical hatchback shape lets rain, dirt etc run over the roof of the car and onto the back where it sticks. I have an Ibiza and get the same problem.

If you ar e getting a lot of soot, it might be worth getting the car checked out. I had this when the car was new. 5 miles and it was black with soot. Turned out to be a burst turbo hose. Nothing on the dash and drive as normal. Just a lot of soot all the time.

Not saying my car isn't sooty - its just the soot being belched out hasn't got a chance to catch up with me. ;) I never have particularly bad areas around the tailpipes - Its just all over the f***in' back end of the car.

I have the same, of course I have the same exhaust as yours did too. Maybe all you vRS owners need to get a TDi? I'm sure I could be tempted to give you mine in return for your vRS and some cash.... ;)

Sorry, not my colour :P (also its not a "vRS" at all)

Maybe I just drive too slowly in my old age!! lol

Doesn't go with the new highlights in the hair??

Yup my furby suffers from it and it has rear spoiler and flaps, but it also suffered before these were fitted.

me and swmbo have commented on generally how our car is the hardest car we've ever owned to keep clean.

useful tip:

baby wipes work very well for cleaning your dirty rear. Like your numberplate and rear lights ;)

I always carry either baby wipes or wet ones in my glovebox, there just so bloody handy

Its bloody annoying how the back get quicker so much sooner than the rest of the car :thumbdwn:

But it look so good when clean, I can forgive it.

As for soot - not a problem on mine, but I did notice on the silver and yellow ones at Brunters that the soot was the only muck on the car! Another reason black is good.

The back of the Superb gets dirty really quickly too, so I wouldn't worry too much, its seems worse this year than normal though, I think it might be to do with that new stuff they are spreading on the roads instead of salt (molases I think someone said it was) I've recently found out they are using it here, and it does seem to make the car dirtier than the old stuff did - roll on summer!!
