DIY AUX cable location suggestions?

Featured Replies

Hello everyone.

I am new to the forums and this would be my first post. :)

I have recently bought my first very own Octavia and I am super happy with it so far. It's a 2007 mk2, 2.0 TDI - Elegance with a good deal of equipment on it including the RNS 510 (not factory fitted though).

This leads me to my first DIY plan since I have the issue of having the RNS 510 but no AUX port on the car. I decided to install an AUX cable myself.

I have already printed the schematics for the ports on the back of the RNS, and I have already received the AUX cable I ordered from ebay.

My big question is where is the best place to pull the cable through?

I wouldn't like it lying around all the time and I would also like it to be easily accessible.

I have thought about pulling it through the top part of the ash tray but then it won't close properly.... I also thought about the glove box but I am not sure if its possible and then again if its possible to close the glove box afterwards..

Maybe some of you more experienced Octavia owners who have already done this can come up with some suggestions?

Also, as a last small thing: Is it possible to push the wires into the small harness leading to the aux ports without detaching the RNS from the canbus? I do not have the code for the radio and neither does the previous owner apparently...

Your car is definitely an Elegance?

If so then there should already be an Aux socket inside the armrest.

Edit:

Just thought... maybe car specifications differ in your country.

If you don't have one already then install it in the armrest. This is the factory location for it.

I added an aux in to the jumbo box on mine using a VW socket (5M0 035 724) to give it an OEM appearance. Otherwise, you might be able to modify one of the button blanks and fit it there?

The stereo shouldn't need a code as it's paired to the car already. Worse case, you can probably get a code from an eBay seller for £10 or so...

@ Phil

Well it should be an elegance - it has all lether seats and doors, heated seats even in the back and a nice electric drivers seat as well as dimming rearview mirror and a full maxidot display. How can I tell for sure? I live in Denmark but I suspect this car was imported when new (maybe from Germany).

Yes I know the original port should be in the armrest but I only have a 1 meter cable and doing this would be a little more troublesome, wouldn't it?

@ langers2k

As far as the local dealership knows, as long as the canbus and the radio are not disconnected, it should not require a code.... could I tell for sure?

I still hope I will find it written on the top of the radio or something like that when I take it out.

How big of a job is it to have it drawn through the bottom of the armrest?

Even if the battery is removed, the radio shouldn't need the code entering. It should only ask for the code when it moves vehicles or is used out of a car.

It wasn't a hard job, I removed the jumbo box to make the hole to I was able to add the cable then :)

OK, but how would it know its in not in a different vehicle after being unplugged and plugged back in.

I was planning on just taking the radio out without disconnecting the harness and just take the 3 aux wires and push them into the correct locations of the existing and already plugged in connector. Would that be possible?

I'm not sure what metrics it uses to determine vehicle ID, I believe it communicates with the instrument cluster so probably the VIN as a starting point.

It should be possible to do it without removing the radio, it'll just be harder :)

The radio code is indeed synced with the instrument cluster.

So as along as it is put back in the same vehicle they talk to each other and authorise it. It may prompt for the code initially but just leave the ignition on for a while and it will re-code itself.

I've seen someone put the aux socket into one of the blank buttons underneath the climate control panel.

OK,

But you see, it's not an aux port. I bought an aux cable that has a jack which plugs straight into your phone. I guess it's only a matter of trying different places to see which one is best.

Ah yes. I see.

I guess it depends where you are going to have your phone.

I drilled a hole in the dashboard top box when I fitted mine. Also ran a 12V cigar socket up there and custom made a plastic plate that sits in the recess to mount the SatNav on. No loose cables anywhere and the SatNav in a perfect position. Hardly use the Aux in since I fit it. I must buy myself a little MP3 player really though could use my iphone but kept leaving it in the top box plugged into the Aux.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I may go for the glove box or the centre console depending on how far my cable can reach!
