Disappointing Ground Clearance ?!

Featured Replies

A Skoda Kodiaq only has 188mm clearance and that is at Kerb Weight.

Skoda Superb has 161 mm for TSI and 149 mm for TDI.

This is too low and i can confirm you can hit rocks on almost any bump or tiny slopes extremely easy.

The Skoda Octavia Scout had 171 mm.

250 mm would have been similar to the VW Tuareg 241 mm.

The Kodiak ground clearance is small and it means it is made to be used for normal roads.

So i wonder what is the purpose of Kodiak if it is only a 2 cm higher sedan ?!

I read that they're going to be making a Scout version of the Kodiaq which will have more ground clearance.

You could fit larger tyres e.g.235/60 instead of 235/55 18 which I believe is one of the sizes.

If you are going to Countries or Area where you must have Snow Chains then the Wheels / Tyres that Skoda say you should have fitted are 215/65 R17's

So that is giving much the same clearance when no chains are fitted as having on 235/55 R 18.

Rather poor really with the wheelbase they have, but then not many worry about break over angles.

Those wanting any respectable Clearance and Articulation and anything other than a big soft roader will need to wait for a Kodiaq Extreme from Skoda,

or just build one themselves...

Some artistic licence from the Media Department.

I doubt the Dealers & Media Launch Days will include driving around some course at an Offroad Centre or river crossings and wading.

According to the official figures, the Kodiaq ground clearance is 190mm, against the Yeti's 180mm.  I wouldn't describe it as disappointing.

It is 188 mm.

For a sedan maybe it is ok, but for an SUV it is very bad.

Take a look again : http://www.biznews.com/motoring/2016/04/04/suvs-whos-got-highest-ground-clearance/

Even a 10 000 euro SUV car, like the Renault/Dacia Duster has 205 mm.

Skoda Kodiaq is basically a 7 seat sedan that has only the SHAPE of an SUV (bigger than Octavia but smaller than Superb and pricier than a Superb)

That 2 mm is not going to make that much difference or the 3 mm because if you look at 'The Official Spec' some are 187 mm clearance at Unladen Weight.

Seeing as it is a 5 seater or even a 7 seater you really need to have some idea what the clearance is at near the Max Gross weight.

Or at least carrying 5 people.

The Yeti might well be 180 mm clearance and lots less in Greenline form, but then with the shorter wheelbase and short overhangs it does the job and as it is it gets by.

Kodiaqs will get by as well, just without much clearance or the risk of damage to the body work or drivetrain if you get adventurous.

Kodiaq will not replace Defender. And it has still better ground clearance than Qashqai, Mokka, Countryman, Sorento, Santa Fe,....

I like Kodiaq because it may be a good replacement of my Grand Scenic, bringing me DSG, 4x4, more HP, more technology,...

Almost none of these cars are bought to go on anything more exciting than a grass verge, for the vast majority of buyers ride height is only a disadvantage - worse fuel economy and worse handling. The purpose of it is to sell to the me-too SUV market as these cars are in fashion.

Not much is replacing a Defender yet and its towing capacity.

But then the actual clearance if taken to the bottom of the diff is not as the official figures and wheel size changes that.

Looking forward to just what abilities the new Kodiaq will have as a SUV / tow barge.

This article is wrong. Captur's ground clearance is 170 mm and not 200 mm.

Offski,

Towing ability of the Kodiaq? 100kg less than my 170 Yeti's 2100kg in 7 seater form! Now that's a surprise....

That is towing weight, they show in the spec and lots less than many SUV's or even MPV's. but its the ability to tow its allowable weights that i am interested in and traction to even get across a wet grassy field towing on the OEM tyres that will be interesting.

(The 7 Seater is less permissible towing weight than a much heavier fwd 150ps diesel Alhambra.)

Offski,

Completely agree having had Land Rover's for ages and now looking for something just like the Kodiaq......only with 7 seats and a 2500kg towing limit.

We don't really need off road ability or ground clearance, just traction on slippery surfaces (fields and slipways) to tow and launch our boat (2350kg on its trailer fully fuelled and watered).

Since we can compromise on 7 seats, we hope that we can delete the two extra seats of the higher powered/ higher spec models so we can keep the Kodiaq's 2500kg towing weight and stay with a Skoda vehicle rather than reverting to Land Rover (though the new Defender in 2018/19 might scratch the itch!).

What's a Sedan other than an old fashioned chair?

We have Hatchbacks or Estates in the UK. This is the UK and it most certainly ISN'T AMERICA.

& Saloons.

& they are not where people go to have a drink and a game of cards.

I don't know have a look in a few Surrey station car parks in the evening you'll most certainly find that they're used for the former!  :swear:

Good write up in Top Gear magazine issue 290 'Best cars 2016'.

Shorter than a Superb, elevated seating, easy in and out and is a 7 seater if you buy one.
