SE Sport order placed!

Today I checked my mpg since last refuel and it has crept upto 58mpg so looks like I may hit early 60s once things loosen up, now have 270 miles on clock, also inflated tyres to economy pressure's as stated in fuel flap, driving mode set to normal 90 percent of time. Do sometimes switch to economy when I know there are going to be parts of the road I can coast for a good half mile at a time with the dsg box, but only when I know there are a few coasting spots in a run, I do not constantly switch between the two settings.

Dont think I'd recommend the economy tyre pressures in winter, you need all the grip you can get.

I tried them in summer and it makes the ride really hard and the car is skittish over bumps.

Driving too hard? I'm driving like a nun lol

I'm changing as per the gear change recommendations and last tank I remained entirely in eco mode. This tank I've changed to normal with little difference.

Have you seen my fuelly.com and that's over 2-3/4 years but, I DON'T drive like a nun.

@gRoberts,

I think yours is the first real complaint for poor consumption I've seen in this or the Aussie forums for the 1.4tsi Octavia.

At a steady true (GPS not indicated) 70mph with cruise control on the flat with no headwind you should be showing close to 45 to 50mpg on the instant readout, depending on wheel/tyre size and  transmission type. DSG has slightly higher gearing in top gear.

Assuming your refuelling calculations confirm the display averages then you have definitely got a problem somewhere.

I can only suggest that you check and tick off the obvious factors and then go back to the dealer and complain.

I have experienced binding brakes on cars, so check disk temperature after a short run with minimal brake use. They should all be cool enough to touch, but be careful.

Similarly with wheel bearings

If it is not friction causing the issues then it must be the engine and the dealer should check for issues.

There is a fuel saving pdf document published by VW for a 90kw tsi manual Golf which is really good and it has a speed/consumption graph for every gear which mirror my consumption on my 103kw manual Octavia almost precisely, although I have not tested it above 70mph.

Am I the only person getting poor economy from my 1.4? Generally getting 37, going up to 41 on the motorway?

New SE Sport 1.4

First longish run, 220 miles

Mostly at close to 60 mph limit

Small stretch of 70 mph dual carriageway

A few towns on route but through them without too much stop start.

48 mpg according to trip computer

Same run 2.0 TDI 58 mpg according to trip computer

Had my 1.4 Se Sport a couple of weeks has has done 200 miles. Mostly town driving and a couple of 40mile round trips and showed AVG consumption 50.4 mpg last night.

I suppose the difference is I've not done any longer distances in my car.

3rd fill up today was at 657 miles and I'm now switching to sport mode for the next tank.

That is good going, what mode are you using?, My first fill I averaged 57 mpg in normal mode, but managed 67mpg on a 35 mile run yesterday.

It's in normal mode. I haven't played around with them yet.

You have the added benefit of driving a diesel and also on longer distances.

I had a Fabia VRS 1.9 TDI (130) and that was giving me approx 40 mpg on the same journeys as the figures below. Unfortunately unlike my Bora (74 mpg - 715 miles a tank) with the same engine in, it wasn't much better on the motorways (48 mpg - 450 miles a tank)

The obvious issue I think is if you look at the average speed, you'll see that I'm doing my daily commute, which is 7 mile each way through varying traffic.

Check out how my camera picks up the IR beams too :)

I'm a bit confused by the numbers in the picture.

Your trip distance is showing zero, the average mpg display is set for 'long term'?

The mk3 has current trip, current fill up and long term display options so for you to be using long term displays for a relatively short trip your car must be a mk2?

Good figures anyway, even for a small diesel.

It would be difficult for a 1.4tsi to match it but doable in the right conditions with a bit of effort. My best round town figures are down to about 40mpg at the moment due to the air-con being on full blast for our current 40 degree C temperatures. In more equable temps similar driving would get me close to 60mpg.

Sorry for the confusion, car is a mk3, I reset the long term average consumption at the start of my return 35 mile journey from Wrexham to welshpool, as I wanted to see what mpg I could achieve using eco mode. As for the mileage trip being on zero I had just refuelled so I reset the trip ready to see what mileage I get out of my 2nd full tank of fuel.

What happened to the Bora? Did you find out why such a change in mpg considering they both had the same engine?

Aerodynamics, almost certainly. Small, upright, short hatchbacks like Fabias are aerodynamically horrible, while saloons tend to be much better.

Nothing really happened per se, it was more down to my stupidity. It had a few things wrong with it and I thought it would be better to get rid than waste money on it.

In hindsight though, I bought a Hyundai Coupe and then the Fabia VRS afterwards wasting about 6 grand...

Not quite sure why there was such a difference in the economy, I tried the usual culprits to no avail. I assumed when I bought the VRS that as the engine code was the same, it would be similar (or better given the difference in size etc) but in terms of economy, it was crap. Went like the clappers though.
