School pickups I guess

Is it a Jeep in a new skin?

So many floor pans are shared these days I guess it's more than likely, but an SUV (2 or 4WD) with minimal ground clearance is a pointless exercise to me.

SUV avoids the dreaded people mover tag perhaps.......they obviously don't have crowned dirt roads in Italy to scrape the sump on.

If they are SUV's and that means Suburban or Sports Utility Vehicle they only really need to mount kerbs or cope with speed bumps and the likes,

they are not being sold as Offroaders or even Softroaders,

Except in the wide brown land though.

If people are as stupid as to not buy the vehicles to suit their requirements you can hardly blame the Creative Directors and Media Department.

Looks like a jacked up Mazda 3 from the side.

Was expecting to to be truly horrible but it's merely dull.

Every manufacturer has to have a SUV it seems in order to appear 'with it'

A practical Alpha Romeo doesn't sound right to me.

Having never driven an Alfa Romeo before I had one of these as a hire car over in Germany a few weeks ago, a Giulia 2.2 diesel manual saloon.

Dreading the worst when getting the keys the car was in fact brilliant. It was brand new (14km's on the clock) and was fully loaded.

It put Skoda interiors to shame.

Find dealerships in the wide brown land is the limiting factor........too exotic for our common man

The most fun Italian car I've driven was the temporary Alfasud if you ignored the sound of rusting that is.

Was the fun bit trying to guess when will the doors fall off?

In those days Alfa South suffered the price of lightness........they would have been ok around Alice Springs, thousands of kms from the sea.

Can't help but read the The name as Stevo, which sounds like a football chant.

I do like Alfas (maybe not so much the current crop) but after looking in a showroom many years ago to see every showroom car with wire handing out and notes about broken things I was put off.

Mate of mine had a 156 and a Brera without too much bother but he drives BMWs now.

With a name Stelvio is obviously likes bends.

I like it a lot and I think it's a smart move from Alfa to go with something from this new "Coupe-SUV" class, rather than with just another typical SUV. The coupe-SUV seems to be the next big thing and I can definitely see the appeal. For the last 15-20 years SUV's have been popular not because people needed off-road capabilities but because they wanted to be in bigger, slightly raised, and more impressive (by volume) cars. The majority of them are driven in cities/highways and have probably never seen anything other than tarmac... They are actually daily cars that are replacing the traditional saloon and estate cars so big ground clearance is nowhere near as necessary (if not being a discomfort actually) as looks.

Consequently, using a SUV as the base but giving it a sleeker back from a coupe and a few added sports touches makes perfect sense really. Some 50 lost litres of boot space do not really matter as they are already big(ish) cars, equal to the saloon or estate they are replacing. The Germans did it first with the X4 and GLC Coupe but with build quality worries (reportedly) being a thing of the past and such looks the Stelvio seems like a strong contender in this class. To me it's more handsome than the X4 and if it wasn't for that gorgeous back of the GLC Coupe that reminds of AMG GT, I would say it looks better or at least just as good as the Merc.

When it came time to change my Alfa Romeo Brera, I drove a Sportline and a Giulia. I really wanted to buy the Alfa. I was stopped by 1) the size of the boot and access to it, 2) the stop/start was quite clunky, 3) it's the first year of a brand new model and 4) the Škoda dealer offered me £1,500 more for my Brera (go figure).

I bought the Sportline. I've no regrets, either, this is a really nice car. In three years, I might have another look at Misano Blue Giulia Veloce.

No Stelvio for me, thanks. In fact, maybe Alfa will add a Giulia coupé hatchback, like the Brera was. Nice...

If you cover up the front (which looks pretty naff in some colours, including red) It looks just like a BMW 3 or 5 series.

I said the same thing on the Alfa site. (Didn't get many "likes".) It looks like it was designed by the clones committee. It was such an important car for Alfa, they had to appeal to the competition's buyers rather than do anything adventurous. Still, it's not selling well.

They appear to have gotten the chassis right, though. And, rather than front wheel drive or 4-wheel drive, I prefer rear wheel drive.
