Front Assist emergency advanced warning

Has anyone had this go-off with no vehicles in front?

My local Skoda shop removed a stone caught in the LH front wheel by wheel-removal/disc/calliper and replaced these.

That evening the advanced warning went-off, front brakes came on momentarily, a display symbol of a car with doors exploding appeared on the dash display with a tone. I didn't know what it all meant so pulled to roadside. The symbol/tone disappeared @ 30 secs so I guessed the LIDAR/Radar? had screwed-up?

I searched the web and found the symbol confirming my conjecture. I have seen the "too-close" symbol before but not the FA warning.

I don't think the wheel removal caused it.

A random operation like this is  statistical. The false radar echo would instigate the FA but the SW would know the 'time-to-crash' and when the echo disappeared decide it had screwed-up and released the brakes, all in milliseconds so I don't think it a big problem unless it is persistent.

I've asked the local shop to request info from Skoda.

This can be triggered by a foil lined crisp packet blowing across the road. Won't be long until someone gets rear ended when the car decides to do an emergency stop, with a clear road ahead. Terrible idea, and built on a budget, what could possibly go wrong.

I have had it happen once (full blown warning, brakes automatically applied) on a clear road. I was fortunate there were no cars behind me, I agree, sooner or later the system designed to prevent accidents is going to cause one- if it hasn't already.

My wife and I both have Fabia’s mk3’s SEL DSG’s the wife’s is one of the first on a 64 plate goes off regularly.

A sudden downfall of leaves set hers off a few weeks ago.

I was following in my 65 estate same amount of leaves nothing. I have done over 12000 miles in mine now it has never gone off.
It begs the question is mine faulty as it has never gone off, or is it down to my driving.
The wife has had it go off over 10+ times in 3000 miles is hers faulty of down to her driving.
Again I must have done over a 1000 of her cars miles never gone off.

She is always moaning about it but it has saved her twice when other cars have pulled out on her.
On reflection compared to my wife I am no ware near as good and cautious driver as her, with 30+ years as a company rep I take quite a few risks and tend follow people at times a little close.

It is not the sort of thing you want to test but is mine faulty?

Yes once.  On examining dashcam footage  it appeared to be a crushed drinks can that was blowing about in the road. Personally I would like to see all vehicles fitted with this to stop the idiot tailgaters. The highway code states that a vehicle should be driven in a way that it can stop safely under any circumstances. Air born pigs ??? .

Mine has only triggered once in the 3 months I've had it. A taxi barged past me whilst I was travelling in a 40mph limit, at 40mph, the taxi doing around 55mph. He cut in on me, only to brake hard and turn left right in front of me. The anti collision system flashed an immediate warning on the dash and started apply the brakes. It did this just a half second or so before I hit the brakes with the car immediately handling back control to me. I would add that the situation was not a 'true' emergency, but did require an immediate response from me to avoid him, rather than simply treading on the brakes. No danger, but there could have been if I or the car had not responded. So that did give me a rather satisfying feeling that the system works. I've not had it triggered by leaves or anything else so far. I didn't think leaves would do it to be frank, unless it's a wall of leaves blowing across the road.

I have had it go off once approaching a roundabout for no apparent reason though a car had just passed in front of me as the traffic lights turned green. I was saved from a near crash when the car in front of me breaker suddenly because the road was flooded so I know the system works. On my car it can be turned off via settings in the radio but I think it's better on than off. Joe

I had mine go off when the car in font swerved and slowed to take a left hand corner, but it wasnt that close i had time to slow down steady but it beat me to it.

Not same car but the same VAG/Bosch system - mine has activated first response on a couple of occasions in 6.5k miles and there has always been a reflective thing close by, once was a cyclist on a bend and he was covered in reflective tape, especially on his paniers; I was in no way any chance of hitting him.

The other was at an approach to a roundabout and a police car was parked on the verge and the police person was there with a reflective taped jacket, holding a police warning sign.

I've never had it trigger the brakes, but it's flashed up the warning and beeped a few times. In all those cases it's been reasonable for it to do so- either a car cutting across me, or someone in front jamming on the brakes. It definitely works! The tailgating warning is more variable- it doesn't always flash up in places where I think it should (when someone moves into the gap on the motorway, for example).

Ive had it trigged for good rason a bike swerving across, it hit the brakes and beeped etc, but inwas already taking avoiding action etc so spooked me slightly.

Other times ive had the audible alarm if approching Traffic a little quick than it likes... what does concern me is how little it does so close.... i dont trust it thats for sure

Its for that reason that I would like to see ALL vehicles fitted with this, It may deter the tailgators.  The Highway Code advises that a vehicle be driven so as to be able to stop safely under any conditions. O well I can dream.

My wife has kindly suggested that I stand in the road while she drives straight at me at speed to see if the system works ok!  I trust my wife, of course!  But anyone see any problem with that?  :D

I don't think the system in the Fabia can detect pedestrians... although apparently the upgraded system for the new Golf/Leon/Octavia facelifts can!

I have had the warning alarm go off several times at the same place, but not every time.

The road is going uphill but is leveling off, and if you look straight ahead there is a metal footbridge going over the road.

It tends to go off when I am travelling faster and there are no other cars on the road.

Wakes me up every time.       :swear:

Thanks AG Falco

Agree 100 percent....

Can I watch.

Mine has gone off in times when I haven't wanted it to, then yesterday morning in slow heavy traffic I accidentally bumped the car in front at less than walking speed, very minor no scratches at all but it didn't work. I'm not passing the blame just reporting my experience.

Mibbae aye, mibbie nay.

Please post a photo of the soon to be widow Estate Man. ;)

How slow is slow.... as they system should Auto Brake if the vehicle is between 3 & 20MPH.

With systems like this i think its important to

1. Be informed, either read the cars Manual or speak to a dealer... but be fully aware of how the system operates and what potenionally could a happen in what situations...this will obviously help if the system is trigger

2. To certain extent forget its there.... it should be relied upon... im not saying those above do.... but i bet you there a number who will think it can depended on.

that said i think its a very handy tool espically in motorway traffic! Its all too easy to get sucked in to follow vehicles a little closer than you should (well in my

Case) and the display is handy reminder of what gap should be kept.

probably less than 3mph tbh, it was so minor, fairly embarrassed about it all really, pride took a bit of a beating apologising to the woman

just to be clear I wasn't relying on it, I forget its there, I simply wasn't paying attention

I has helped in a good few situations where its beeped (not braked) and alerted me

As i say i was suggesting you was, but seeing the way some drive etc could fully believe people would try and rely on it.

But i think the general education of prospective buyers is a little lacking.

Thanks for replies and comments.

My dealer suggested to check it out but in reality I decided nothing wrong unless it happens frequently.

I forgot that it did work correctly once. I followed a car round a roundabout and it stopped for no reason. Was only going slow but it went-off before I could apply braking myself during the thought-process; "what's he stopped for?" In this case it was obvious. The random one, nothing in front, was confusing.
