Speed camera POI

Featured Replies

Hello everyone! Got my new Superb L & K estate two weeks ago, and regret taking so long to see the wisdom in Skoda - absolutely love it! I'm still coming to terms with the infotainment system (which is taking me a bit of time (but interesting) to come to terms with) but was disappointed to find there is no POI to warn of 'danger zones'. Can anyone offer advice on the easiest way to download speed cameras on to my Columbus sat nav? Also, I can't understand why there are two rear fog lights, but only the offside one lights up?

Can't answer the POI question but the rear fog lamp is standard. No legal requirement for 2 rear fog lamps so not provided. Most cars these days only have one provided.

However as the car is sold in Europe the design has to cater for left hand drive so the fixture is there.

Hi, see topic headed POI worked a treat for me

Cheers guys. I take the point about needing only the offside fog light. My local dealership said the system could be reprogrammed so that both fogs come on (better for when I'm driving abroad). Then they said it could take up to two hours to fix (??) and I would have to pay the labour cost! I can think of better ways to spend £200+ !

Fog lights the work of the devil. Don't tell me you put them on at the first whisp of mist and rain?

The non lighting light is a dummy light cluster, so you would need to purchase a European cluster for that side to work. Only then should a VCDS programmer be able to activate it for you, though my local German dealer stated that it required extra wiring. I cannot confirm if that is the case (the, extra wiring that is), but if you do go down that route and self fit, please let us know.

For the camera alerts you need to subscribe to a good camera list like this one. It costs less than £20 a year and they're updated constantly, but you can get a free year if you submit a new camera location. Once you have a subscription follow BillyJim's guide to converting their files (download the general 'other - CSV' one) to VW format so that the Columbus can use it. It's all covered in his post here (post number 13 in the thread, just in case the linking is wonky).

Thanks Rainmaker, I'll give it a try if the topic Superbrex mentions doesn't work. If you're still there Superbrex, can you provide a link to the POI topic?

As for using foglights at the first whisp of fog or rain, philpix, the simple answer is "why would I?". Not sure why my query even prompted this response. Having said that, I confess to being irritated by boy racers who drive with front fogs on (illegally) all the time. And those who forget to turn the rear one(s) off. Almost as irritating as the drivers who drive with no lights on at all in mist and pouring rain! Naturally, I would always use foglights in torrential rain and thick fog. Who wouldn't?

Doesn't this Skoda site do the same for POI's without struggling with German?

Won't get my Superb until later in the month so cannot try out myself.

The link I gave you IS the POI topic mate. I just linked it for you because Superbrex didn't... ;)

Unfortunately the Skoda web version you refer to is faulty and although it produces a file in what looks like the correct format you will get a "software update error" when you try to load it.

I did bring this to the attention of Skoda months ago but I tried it again today and it still won't work.

I have also been playing with POI data for speed cameras today. I found the Skoda tool also did not work, the folder structures it creates are not correct. I used the German tool and it all worked find. I got my speed camera data from POIplaza as I don't want to pay pocketgpsworld for data when their data is all user generated.

On another note once I had a working update, I have looked to see if I can reverse engineer the final format. The data in the folders appears to be easy to write code to convert to, but the route txt file I have not yet worked out how the hashes are keys in the file are produced. If anybody knows please let me know. I would love to code a tool that does this better than the VW tools available online.

I've always assumed that the reasoning was that with L & R rear fogs the difference between brake lights on and brake lights off would be less obvious from a distance, particularly bearing in mind the foggy conditions. With just one fog light then it is clearly a fog light and the operation of the brake light on the other side will be more obvious. Mind you with so many cars having an additional high level brake light this may be less relevant now.
