Really bad fuel economy on 2014 2.0 CRDI 170bhp DSG L&K Combi

Featured Replies

my brakes were rubbish on the 4 x4 when I bought it as a demonstrator with 7 k , I'd assumed it had been hammered and the brakes glazed. I made a vow never to get an ex demo model and when I changed the rear pads the braking improved dramatically

Mines wasnt an ex demo but the brakes were appalling..

Exactly the same as mine changed rear pads to Black Diamond Predator pads and difference was unbelievable.

I trod on the brakes to try and do an emergency stop , no abs or skids , it just gently slowed down . compared with my other 2 wd which had great brakes

Hi guys,

Sincere apologies for not responding to any of the posts. A lot going on with work amongst other things that got me completely side tracked which shouldn't have stopped me from at least giving some feedback so again apologies for that.

Lots of great feedback from everyone and i really do appreciate the time taken to reply to my post.

Regarding the bad fuel economy i changed to a different fuel station. I was using Tesco and whilst i know supermarket fuel is reportedly of poorer quality (not saying this is fact) but i had no issues using fule from Tesco's for many many years with my Octavia and it returned great MPG so up until now i had no reason to change. Anyway so like i said i changed to a main stream fuel station and i noticed a massive improvement for 2 fills at least. I was getting an average of between 29-32mpg on short (around town trips) and on longer trips when travelling at a speed of approx. 60mph i was getting mid to high 40's and even hit 52mpg. When i'm travelling at motorway speeds which is 120KM in IRE i never get more than 42mpg. IN the last 2 fills i've noticed the mpg drop again and this is reflected in my fuel gage. I always fill to brim and so far on the last fill i've done 82miles and almost used a 1/4 tank.

As i mentioned things have been a bit maniac lately but have calmed down so i'm booking the car in with the dealer to look at the brakes as they are just horrible, also the whining/droning noise i get when traveling between 100-120km and also the fueling issue.

@tall-pete, i think EGR could be a potential issue here but i have never got a regen light come on since i purchased the car back in Sep 16. Hoping a diagnostic from the dealer will determine if this is indeed the cause of the bad economy. I've sat in the car at idle with the DSG in park with aircon, electric heater etc turn off and at a lot of the time the current fuel consumption shows between 1 and 1.2 1/100km which is almost double what i expect it to be as i've seen this in my octavia and my wife's Astra.

I'll update with what the dealer finds.

First up having driven a PD and a CR (octavia) I'd opinion that the PD has more of a kick in the back effectu. Since your looking for it, try the DSG in sport and give it a heavy boot when in 3rd. If it's going to give you the kick you're looking for, I expect that's where you'll find it. In sport 3rd does give a kick but it still feels like it's lacking massively in torque. Might be simply down to a heavier car and the CR having a more refined power/torque curve compared to the PD which just kicks you in the ass which i quite enjoyed every now and then :-)

Back to the boring bit...

Driving style matters a fair bit. It's taken me a few weeks to get the best from a DSG but on a straight motorway it should not make a lot of odds. Try a steady 60 on the flat and see what you get for 5 minutes. If you can find someone with VCDS they can take a code read. No one within a 30mile radius with VCDS so only option is to purchase my own and they're not cheap!

Tyres - a sport tyre even a high pressure will add rolling resistance. Alignment never hurts. - When the dealer swapped all the alloys because the originals were badly buckled they assured me they carried out wheel alignment.

Brakes - presume no hot wheels? Badly adjusted hand brake? popped to mind as warm brake fluid = soft pedal. Not checked the wheels for any heat so will check that for sure

Lights - as in a regular regeneration light popping up? No regen lights have ever come on

Fuel quality - I would hate to get involved in this argument but the bottom of a station's tank is probably not pretty ( if anything like what I see professionally). A tin of decent engine cleaner might help. I have used a fuel cleaner but haven't noticed any difference. Could a faulty MAF sensor cause over fueling?

Don't know what the collective wisdom is on best product these days for automotive use.

Getting less probable...

Dodgy wheel bearing? Probably too young for that but give them a spin. I had it in once with the dealer and they said no but i can't help but think that it is. Whilst it is young i have read other posts from people who described similar issue and turned out to be bearing in the end.

Finally someone on here will know for sure (I don't) but anecdotally when the Fabia EGR valve got stuck it's fuel consumption was a lot worse. Took ages for the warning light to finally show up. New EGR valve gained about 5mpg.  42mpg would not surprise though. My Octavia CR170 manual got about 44 on a regular day. I think EGR could be a potential issue here but i have never got a regen light come on since i purchased the car back in Sep 16. Hoping a diagnostic from the dealer will determine if this is indeed the cause of the bad economy or as mentioned above a possible faulty MAF sensor might be causing over fueling? I've sat in the car at idle with the DSG in park with aircon, electric heater etc turn off and at a lot of the time the current fuel consumption shows between 1 and 1.2 1/100km which is almost double what i expect it to be as i've seen this in my octavia and my wife's Astra
