Hi folks,

I've tried searching the forum but I can't get a specific answer to my problem so I've resorted to a new thread. Apols if it's a repeat.

My 2002 Fabia 1.4i has an issue that's been bugging me for several months now - the central locking keeps firing randomly, both on and off.

The symptoms are:

  • Going over a bump while driving often un/locks the car
  • Unlocking the car, opening the passenger door then closing it often triggers a relock (immediately, not after the security period)
  • I believe that at least sometimes closing the drivers door will cause the locks to fire but far less frequently (it's done this at least once, luckily outside my house, but it could also be due to the rocking of the car when I slammed the door)
  • Opening the passenger door doesn't trigger the courtesy light
  • I did have an issue some months ago with the buzzer not sounding when the driver's door was opened with the lights on, but this went away quickly
  • The problem is much worse during the winter, and it's annoying because you can't leave the car warming while you scrape the windows

I did ask my dealer to have a look while they carried out an MOT but because it was June they couldn't replicate the problem (typically, it occurred a couple of times as I drove home). I'm assuming it's an issue with the passenger door (I noticed the speaker on that side sounds blown too) but wondered if there's anything I've overlooked? (i.e. there's a little rust on the trailing edge of the passenger side wing where it lines up with the seal. Is it likely to be water incursion here rather than in the door?)

Any ideas of the likely culprit or any tests I can do before I start stripping the door card?

Ta muchly in advance.

Usually a broken wire in the door hinge area. The wires flex every tone the door is opened and eventually break. Pull the rubber boot back as far as you can and have good look at both front looms.

Ta muchly for that. I'd kinda guessed this might be the culprit but I wasn't sure if Fabias had an issue with water incursion in the door or footwells and whether the loom or control units might be doing the backstroke where they're awash.

I'll give it a look and keep my fingers crossed. It's a little cold to be stripping doors at the moment!

Had the same thing happen to mine, exactly the same symptoms.

Ta muchly for the pic - took me a moment to work out the problem but it's pretty clear. Fingers crossed it's something this straightforward.

My daughters fabia had exactly the same symptoms as yours moongrove. Tackled it last weekend. A bit fiddly but not that hard. Tips; rather than try and refit the rubber boot over the clips in the door, remove the clip, fit the rubber boot and then click the clip back into the bodywork. Also there might be some way of releasing the door strap thing to give you more space to work in.

Well, that was a fiddly job. The front clips came off easily but the back ones didn't and they're hidden behind the door.

Got both ends of the boot off and couldn't see anything obvious. Jiggled and wiggled the wires but no reaction. Went to trim the wrapping back a bit and noticed a small piece of black electrical tape wrapping the wires (the loom one's fabric) but it was a red herring - no break - but I think someone's had a go before. Apart from this the tang on the top black plug looks damaged.

So I've reseated the plugs after adding a little water dispersant, boxed it up and slammed the door a few times. Nothing so far but I think it's unlikely to be that easy.

Thanks again for your advice.

Oh eck moongroove, sorry to here you never found anything. Your symptoms smacked of mine and TMB's. on the plus side, you have ruled out one suspect cause by checking out the loom.

Ta for everything. I'll have to pull off the door card (not a job I enjoy) and root around for a break. If I find anything I'll post a pic for the next user.

Hope you find something moongroove. I'm interested to learn if there is a repair kit for this section of loom or if you have to buy the full monty. Wonder how much that would cost !!!!!!!!!!!! Good luck mate and make sure you have plenty of those pesky green door card clips that break to hand.
