air and fuel filter housing screws

Some of the above on my MKII VRS are quite worn and tricky to remove. I thought I'd try to source some replacements before servicing it next weekend. I couldn't see anything on ebay, but maybe I didn't search hard enough. Do they have any specific names apart from 'housing screw'? Or would they be reasonably priced at the dealers?

Many thanks.

Most fixings are industry standard generic ones, not Skoda specific, so should be available on the 'bay.  They are specified by thread type, diameter, length, composition (e.g. stainless steel) and type of head rather than by what they're used for. Take one out and measure it.  Head type is not usually important - socket head, spline, philips etc. etc. just depends on what tools you have to hand.

No, you're not overthinking it.

I would use a micrometer.  It's very hard to tell the difference between, say, a 5 mm and a 6 mm shank by putting them on a ruler and squinting at it. Most fasteners will go up in size in whole mm, though 5.5mm are fairly common.

The fuel filter cap fasteners will be machine screws, which will need careful measuring. Don't worry about the length too much - longer ones can always be cut down to size with a hacksaw.  Run a nut up the thread before you cut, then wind it down afterwards to repair any cutting burs on the thread's ends.

The air filter will most likely be coarse threaded self tapping screws, which are not so critical for measurement.

The air box screws are a little unusual. In a TSI they are anyway.  They are a very coarse thread  and they are not threaded for the first 25-40mm I can't remember exactly - you'll have to remove one and check.  You'll be hard pressed to match them exactly, I had to get some close matches and file the non threaded section down smooth. The non threaded section allows the top section of the filer housing to seal more easily with the bottom section without getting caught up in the thread.

Skoda don't list the airbox screws as they think they are not removable (only listed with the air filter box) and only offered me a complete new airbox at over £100!

My airfilter box screws were very corroded on the heads - imagine yours are too.

As stated by previous poster, I think you'll find the machine screws for the fuel filter housing relatively easily. Skoda may offer those separately if you are having trouble. You could call and find out but sourcing a equivalent will likely be cheaper.

I'd use an on-line breaker's part finder such as this:

https://www.1stchoice.co.uk/find-a-part

Very useful for parts such as the screws for the airbox and fuel filter housing. Always give them a call in person too after they offer parts to double check. I got some very good steel wheels for winter tyres for about £40 delivered using this service.

You'll find suitable replacements at your local DIY superstore.

Failing that, ask at a garage. Some mechanic will have something in their gash box.

Thank you skodacarman, theclient, golf-fiend and micmac for your advice, I really appreciate it. (especially with the names of the different screws and the experience with the dealer). I will go down the ebay/DIY store route first, then breakers/garage if that fails.

Once again, many thanks!

I'm engaged in the same search for air filter box screws for both my Octavia and my son's Fabia 2.  The screws in question are known as Hi-Lo thread forming screws, and in the case of the Fabia at least, they're Phillips headed (not Pozi-driv).  These threads are generally specified where multiple insertions are required into plastic.  The plain shank allows them to be captive in the box lid.  They're definitely not freely available from DIY stores.  Our dealer has made the same response as that received by TheClient above:  happy to sell us a whole new box lid for £(stupid amount).  I'll measure one up and see if a specialist plastics fastener supplier can supply any.  I'll let you all know how I get on.  Clearly stainless would solve the problem in the longer term, and as Phillips drives are not my favourite, I'll see if they come in either Pozi or Torx.

Let's have a group buy. I would be interested as a few screws are costing £10 from a breakers. It's ridiculous.

Looking at the template I made, these ones look right 5x33mm. I suppose the only thing that could be different would be the length of non thread section for the captive part in the top filter housing, but they look about right in the  pics.  They are cross head, the skodas (on my vRS) are torx but beggars can't be choosers.

I can get them for £1.55+ vat from TPS and they are not a stock item.

Assuming we need say 6 that's £11.16. Suddenly the breakers look to be on par.

Yep, indeed.  But better than the £100+ for the air filter box they replied with when I asked! I filed some 5mm hex head self tappers, they do work, but the thread is not as course as the skoda ones so don't know if they'll end up stripping the plastic out after repeat use.

Actually from an old picture it's 4 screws assuming they are all bad. So not so bad.

I can order some in if people want them and send some out for postage cost on top. As long as I don't get inundated. Lol

That would be great, I haven't got round to getting hold of any!

Please send me a pm and chase me. When I order next time from TPS in a few weeks I can order this too. Do you want 4?
