Gearbox Oil Leak (Notchy Gears)

Featured Replies

Looking for some advice prior to taking the car into the dealership.

Last year (about May) going from 1st to 2nd I noticed the shift being notchy. 3rd to 2nd was fine. I had it into the dealership and they could not replicate the fault. It has went from notchy to sometimes grinding and not the usual smooth gear change. It is an intermittent fault and can be fine for a while. I have had it into the dealership at least 3 times since then the last being last week and again they could not replicate the fault. This morning I noticed a slight oil patch on my drive had a look tonight at it looks like the gearbox has a slight oil leak.

I took out Skoda All Compoment extended warranty when the manufactures warranty expired on December 2016.

Any thoughts? is this a common problem also could this be classed as wear and tear on a vehicle thats just over 3 years old.

Grinding + Oil leak from gearbox is not wear and tear, there's something wrong with it. Especially on a car just over 3 years old. Try the dealership again mentioning the oil leak.

On a side note... How much are you paying for the warranty? I recall it being quite expensive when I quoted on it.

Warranty cost me £527.

Taking it into the garage tomorrow.

Update

Got car back on Friday oil leak traced to crank shaft oil seal all fixed under warranty. Gear change is a lot smoother however I am reserving judgement as the clunky gear change is intermittent.

Thank goodness I took out an extended warranty.

My gearbox sometimes does this. Not noticed any leaks but sometimes feel the gear changes could be smoother! Car is just over 2 years old and still under 3 year manufacturers warranty..

Thank you for posting @bhoywonder.

Mate with a 63 plate diesel Audi (basic same engine/gearbox) had clutch judder problems - rear crankshaft oil seal and clutch replaced. Appears this is a known problem on some VW group cars. Hope they've sorted the seal issue on later cars by now !?

Don't want to open up a new thread, because I have the same identical problem.

I own a Mk3 - 2016 - Octavia Scout 4x4 with the 150PS diesel engine in it.

From 1st into 2nd is REALLY notchy.  I find that when the gearbox has warmed up, it is better, but still there.  I also have issues with changing into reverse.  Clutch has to be ~FULLY~ depressed - to change gears and I know you cannot rush the gearbox.

From what I have seen so far, get Skoda to change the gearbox fluid - and get them to check the rear crankshaft oil seal.  Its being assessed in June when the car goes in for its service.

I should also mention that I have had issues with grinding gears too.  My Partner's SE 4x4 gearbox is a dream compared to my Scout's.

Thought is might be because of the extra 'off-road' gubbins they stick onto the Scout.

Thinking about keeping my VRS TDi 2014 estate for another year or so. Definitely getting clutch judder for first two changes from cold in the morning, and notchy-ness. Car has done 61k, have seen posts saying gearbox oil change could sort it out, is this a warranty thing or is it less hassle if I just get a local approved place to do the oil (have extended warranty).

I know this thread is old, but REALLY get your gearbox oil changed at about 40k miles.  It will make a massive difference.

All in favour of thread necromancy if it's helpful. Will do this next service. Still have it!
