No-one changes a single mass flywheel for a dual mass one, do they?

  • Just a mad thought - he did put oil in it didn't he?

Back again. I was just wondering what you lovely people on here think the problem is with the droning 3rd gear in my newly rebuild box? I've spoken to the person who rebuild it, and he's at a loss as to what could be the problem with it. He told me that the box had all new bearings and syncros. The box also rattles when easing off in 2nd, if the car's up to temperature.

If all the bearings have been replaced, would the first motion shaft bearing have been replaced as well? (Don't know what a bearing kit would have in it!)

I've also got a rattle that's developed when the car at idle and out of gear (sounds as if it's coming from behind the NS front wheel area - has my mechanic fecked something up?)

Thanks in advance ;)

The rattle sounds as if something's loose, your mechanic may have forgotten to tighten something up fully.

The droning 3rd gear can only be the teeth not meshing properly since all the bearings have been replaced, it may mean that selector fork is bent.

Cheers Sep. I've popped into my mechanic and said it will be the diff in the gearbox that's making the noise at idle. He took it for a spin and now 2nd gear at low revs and no throttle sounds like it's smashing itself to bits! Diff again?

Is your mechanic actually qualified in anything?

I ask because diff bearings get louder the faster you go, doesn't matter what gear you're in, diff noise is proportional to road speed.

The mechanic I use is a friend of a friend - my mate who put me onto him, has been using him for 20 years. Doesn't mean that he knows his arse from his elbow, though! You are very knowledgeable, Sep - what's your background?

So you think the whining in 3rd is (possibly) selector fork. What's the rattling at idle, then? And I'm lost as to what the loud rattling when warm is in 2nd........

Oh, and I forgot to say that 3rd, 4th and 5th 'hum' when warm.

I'm a contract project engineer.

The technical term for your gearbox is FUBAR, it hasn't been reconditioned at all, all the bearings are still shot and one or more selectors are bent, this kind of damage is a result of an oil leak and the car it was fitted to was driven for many thousands of miles with low gearbox oil levels resulting in major mechanical wear to every moving part in the gearbox, a new input shaft seal may have been fitted and the gearbox refilled and given back to you, however unless the bearing was replaced as well the new seal will start leaking very shortly resulting in a contaminated clutch plate and resultant clutch slip.

Thanks, Sep. So should I just cut my losses, get a refund, and look for another gearbox? It seems odd that the gearbox that was recon'd was my original 'box, but came back 1000 times worse! I only had a crunchy 2nd gear! Now it sounds like a bag of nuts has been emptied into it!

I keep seeing this gearbox listed on ebay (I believe it was posted in this thread by a kind soul a while back.....) Would it be worth taking a punt on it instead? It has done a lot of miles.......I'm losing the will to live at the moment! I see gearboxes in my nightmares!

And here's a reply from the seller - "Yes the gearbox has been tested. It is supplied with a 60 days warranty." fills you with confidence, eh?

Dude, that's not really a lot of miles, it's £235 landed on your doorstep, like I said ages ago I'd roll the dice on it. Get 'er done.

Thanks, Sep. But my gearbox had only done 54k when I bought it! Are they all really that bad? I've always wanted a Mk1 Fabby, and I love my car to bits, but all this BS with gearboxes is putting me off Skodas, full stop :(

Ah, bugger! That gearbox was sold today, of all days! I should be getting some money back from the old gearbox, and I even asked what sort of nick the one listed was in today, and they've bloomin' sold it! Back to the drawing board I suppose. I've seen this one listed:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-AUDI-SEAT-SKODA-5-SPEED-1-4-1-9-TDI-GEARBOX-CODE-LBQ-JDD-JXY-GGU-/222596603281?epid=0&hash=item33d3ca9d91:g:DjgAAOSw42JZCerB

Any good? I'm losing the will to live! Thanks ;)

They've had that one lying around for a while by the look of it, make 'em an offer of £200, they might take it.

Yeah try that one and just get the input and diff seals changed before it goes in along with a transmission fluid change and then obviously new release bearing, and give it a good clean on the outside to reduce chance of any contamination and get it fitted to the car with the new friction plate.

Im sure this time you will have success they are usually very smooth gearboxes when working well I think you'll start to love your car again once it is sorted.

Thanks, guys. I've fired in a £200 offer, and we'll see how we get on. What gearbox oil do you suggest to buy? I bought the Skoda stuff last time......I've got some STP gearbox treatment I might stick in as well. Anything to protect the latest 'box!

Just put the OEM skoda stuff in don't bother with treatments if the box is no good they wont help. If the box is ok it will work without the treatment

Yes don't put any additives in it. It doesn't need it and they do nothing anyway.

Plain and simple it is! I'm currently on my 2nd offer for the gearbox I posted. Are there any of these 'pick a part' websites that are any good? Just looking for other options. Thanks :-)

Nope, they're just middlemen looking for a payday at your expense.

So is eBay the only option?

Sorry for the double post. I've secured another box (£305! Bloomin' heck) The new clutch disc has been ordered, and the breakers who sold me the duff 'box and FUBAR'd my one, are going to issue a refund when they get the two gearbox back to 'assess' them (Yeah right!)

Hope all goes well this time. 'bout time you had some luck!

Back again! So, I've managed to get the new 'box fitted, and it seems a lot better than the other two. 1st 'sings' a little when warm, but nothing too bad. Anyhoo, I was driving home today, and all was well until I stopped in traffic and tried to slide the gearstick into 1st from neutral - the stick just sort of hit a 'wall' Like when you try to engage reverse without pushing the stick down. After a little wiggle, it went in - but it keeps doing it. Also when I put the car into reverse and start moving the gearstick will pop back up - sort of like it's getting stuck when I push it down to select reverse. Thanks again - happy days :)

Adjust the gear linkage.

Is that hard to do, Sep? For my mechanic, probably!

EDIT: Is it worth greasing anything, as well?
