Who has a high mileage Vrs

Evening all.

I have had two mk1 vrs's and am looking into getting another as my daily driver yaris is so boring. I have seen a few with 100k plus which will be what my budget allows.

Who is running a vrs with high miles as a daily. I will be doing about 500 miles a week.

Had my vRS for 9 years 120000 on clock.

185K.  Runs lovely but self-service 4/5K annually thoroughly and had new turbos/cluth & DMF/steering rack (big costs).

 

 

Try to get one where the clutch and turbo have been done already.

Same as sep said. Im on 127k but replaced everything prior to boosting around.

You obviously enjoy the power and would use it, but at 100k plus the turbo clutch flywheel are ticking time bombs.

 

Budget for repairs or change before it needs done for peace of mind. 

My doner vRS has near-on 190k when I bought it and took it off the road. I've known this car since it was 60k old (I test drove it for my mate when he bought it) and the difference was put on in under  4 years commuting between Taunton and Bristol. 

 

He did kill the long-ratio gearbox, which was fully rebuilt, but other than that it was bob-on and never let him down. 

 

It was also mapped very early in it's life but is still on the original turbo.

Mines on 156k on the original clutch and turbo.

Just clocked up 163k, new turbo at 152k. Car bought at 115k, 2 new timing belts by Skoda in the 4 years of ownership ive changed rear shocks and bits twice, recent rear springs. General wear and tear, still pulls well no map yet. Think original clutch but might needs changing it soon.

at this age aproaching almost half driving about I'd say are either close or past this miles without really even going to any great lengths. Mines > 130k.

 

Its fine for the majority of cars. Other than smoking a bit excessively on start up ( glowplugs?or some valve stem wear) and in my case some bushes wear it drives fine.

 

Evidence of servicing and owner TLC can help or expect to save a bit for maybe stuff like bushes etc but they will be getting cheap as chips now

( they they are getting into banger territory so you have a higher chance of a lemon OR a well looked after car and up to you to find out)

A forum q+a won't answer that side of it. Though you could buy from a "good" dealer or add your own warranty?

An independant inspection might though though do they have any advisories showing on MOT's? )

 

Its about a tenth of what it cost originally to guys like me from new.

I've had some "death signs" well according to some over 30K that can easily just be ignore (slightly noisier turbo, if left out of gear on idle an occasional clutch DMF death rattle but I think Ive had that for 40-50K !!)

 

Both my VRS and its brother are both on 190k+ (same regs apart from last letter) ;-)

260,000 at the last service. I'm not aware of one that's done 300,000 but this one should do it easy. 300,000 would need a third service book :)

 

I'm looking at swapping the turbo again, just in case. The second clutch is still strong with 140,000 on it. I obviously have the huge advantage that I had mine from new so I know what's been done to it, and they are generally extremely strong cars.

 

From what I can see, 120,000 miles is barely run in.

 

Just dont rag it like a new car, service it to schedule and you'll have very little trouble.

256k on my 54 plate.

 

Owned 9 years, and use for daily commute.

 

Best car I've ever had, despite breakdown on the A5 in North Wales on Sunday.

 

Worn spline on gear selector lever where it fixes to the gearbox left me with no gears whilst overtaking.

 

Easy £36 fix though.

 

Had it chipped at 192k - well worth doing (mine's a mild Superchips job).

 

Also put Jabbasport RARB on, again recommended.

 

Running on 3rd clutch, 5th cambelt and 10th set of tyres that I've put on.

 

Serviced myself since 100k, and only do when indicator lights, so every 15,000 miles or so (I know most of you will frown), but do use Castrol Edge 5W30

 

100k+ is nothing to worry about, and parts very easy to find and fix if anything goes wrong.

For 500 miles a week, a Fabia VRS might not be the best option. If there's motorway miles involved something a little more stable or able to return better MPGs. An Octavia 1.9TDI might be a reasonable compromise.

As someone who regularly racked up 1000 miles a week in a Fabia vRS I have to say that I couldn't disagree with you more. The combination of a big, unstressed, Diesel engine in a small car is motorway heaven. The diesel is extremely quiet so you can listen to music or have a clear telephone conversation and the extensive torque curve means you almost never have to change gear above 60mph unless you really want to drop that tailgating BMW 320...

I used to do over 650 miles a week commuting in a 1.4 tdi no bother, so I can't see why you'd have a problem doing 500 in a VRS?

I didn't say it couldn't do it. Just that there may be a better option.

 

A Vectra for example, would be much quieter overall. The Astra's I've owned were also much quieter. It's about platform capabilities and budget. The larger cars tend to be quieter.

 

For the positives, combination of cruise control and a diesel engine with anti-stall makes a superb rush hour ninja.

Mines just hit 110k miles, everything still original, dmf clutch turbo etc. I do 500ml a week ignoring weekend running. Everything's fine just suspension and tracking issues on mine but that's down to f1 not sorting the alignment out properly...

 

Wouldnt worry about higher milage on a pd engine, as people have said, and if lofty's reading this he will be one to ask as we had this coversation a few years ago when i picked up some tyres from him, theyre barely run in until they hit 100k miles, which i believe is down to the sealing improvements from carbon lodging around the piston rings, reducing any leakage.

Im now doing between 600 and 700 miles a week in my black one, granted I've just done a precautionary clutch and DMF change due to vibration but I'm averaging 52 mpg day in day out, it's a punchy thing for motorway overtaking and it's comfy.

 

Depreciation ain't an issue and it'll need regular 10k services but apart from that I love it

Just picked a vrs up yesterday at hinckley past Nottingham over 170 mile home sat at 70 on the m1 50 through the dreaded roadworks it was showing 68 mpg when I pulled up on the drive very impressed my last fabia was a mk2 1.4 tdi sport the vrs did better mpg than my 1.4 no doubt down to the extra gear

They're great for that, yup ;)

Black ones especially good when polished up for your wee one to take the chalk to :sweat:....  Least I saw what stripes would look like on it

You do see the odd one that wasn't reliable and spent most of its life in bits in the dealers, but generally they're pretty good. I'm sure that if you give it a good run it'll be fine until the turbo implodes from stuck vanes caused by lack of use. ;)
