Fuel Card rip off?

Featured Replies

Just received my £500 fuel card from the offer Skoda were running recently when you purchased a car.

To activate it you have to agree to the terms and conditions and due to circumstances I had to time to read them!

It appears that your charged a £2 per month administration fee and various cancellation fees should you cancel. It's restrictive in that you can't use it at "pay@pump" and to pay at various other locations.

The only way I can see not paying any charges is to buy something immediately for £500 or more and then cancel the card within 14 days of receiving it.

The reason you can't use them at pay@pump is because the pump only checks of the cars is active and that at least £1 is available.

one you finish filling up the pump then debits the correct amount, so if you only had £3 on the card you could fill your tank, drive away and they'd have to go to some hassle to get the rest of the money from you.

didnt realise about the £2/month charge but to be honest I just bought a £500 amazon voucher with mine.

We've not been charged £2 per month and we've had ours since October....... Are you sure the £2 per month is only if you cancel it early maybe..... Or some other obscure reason.

We took just over £400 off straight away to buy a new iphone SE but there is still around £80 left on it to spend yet.

Mrs G had a £500 fuel card when we  bought her new Fabia 3 SE-L  No charges.

The card was some form of Visa card loaded with £500.  No restrictions to where you could use it.

A quick look at the T&Cs....... You missed off the rest of the sentence relating to the £2 per month admin fee.......

"A monthly administration fee of £2 will be deducted from any available balance if your Card has not been used for a period of 6 consecutive months"

So unless you're going to sit there and not use it for more than six months it's not an issue..... :notme:

Ive never heard someone describe being given a no strings attached card as a 'rip-off before'

I had no problems with mine, used it for fuel and to pay for the service on the mrs SEAT Ibiza. Its a great little incentive, didnt think about buying amazon vouchers with it but that would have just been £500 of tat lying round my house in the end!

I can't grasp why anyone would buy any sort of vouchers with one of these cards - UNLESS there was additional incentives to do so and the vouchers were going to be used 'imminently'!

Haven't seen the thing about 6 months of the T & C's I've read, but thanks for the info.

Looking at the T & C's it reads as though the management company for the card take £2/month. So my "free" £500 fuel voucher nets someone who produces the cards a management fee, courtesy of me! Multiplied by the number of cards Skoda has "given" away, equals a nice little "earner" or "rip off"!

if your saying there has been no £2/month deducted from yours having checked your balance then happy days!

As the fuel card is only valid for 12 months it could be more useful for someone to use it to purchase gift cards or vouchers that can be kept for a longer period of time. ;)

As per my above posts..... The T&Cs say you only get charged the £2 per month IF you DON'T use the card for six months. We've had ours 5 months without any charges as yet. ;)

Thanks for the info. Those are different to the T & C's that have come through on the email with my activation code.

Even if they did change the T&Cs and charged you £2 a month you're still getting £476 for nowt. :)

Possibly, but vouchers are only okay if the supplier doesn't go out of business - not that they would do that intentionally......

Why didn't you just use the original card though?

Becase an iPad Pro costs more than £500 and to my knowledge splitting one purchase over multiple cards only works at Chip and Pin point of sale and not for distance purchases

If your making that statement I'm going to be unable to argue/debate this anymore, as that to me, is some weird logic!

The £500 is part of the original deal when your working out the figure to purchase, or it was for me. So why would I want to give someone part of it. Nothing is free! All I'm trying to establish are the t &c's and the fact that it said on the original advert £500 free fuel or effectively another £500 off the deal. Now, having read the conditions on the email I was sent that appears not to be the case.

I posted to give people a heads up and to seek information. It now appears from the Skoda website that that is not the case that there is no charge.
