How to tell if engine is mapped.

Featured Replies

In September I bought my Dec 13 2.0tsi vrs Octavia. It was purchased from a dealer and it came with a private plate with vrs on it. I have needle sweep so presume that the previous owner activated that.

I did a 0-60 test with a mobile app and it said 5.2 seconds. I have a feeling it could have had been mapped. How could I tell?

A dyno run?

The Dyno as above ^^^,

and 0-62 mph, 0-100 mph runs with a V-Box or something accurate to do the timing gives a good idea, if your App time is right then you have a fast one to 60mph which is not 100 kmh.

PS

If you know it is mapped then you need to declare to your Insurance, so maybe best not know and not find out then if ever there

is an issue / claim and a 'loss adjuster' is checking Social Madia / Enthusiast Forums you do not show as aware your car was Mapped when you purchased it.

(Main Dealers even selling Skoda Approved Used Cars do not 'Revert to Factory settings'.

?

How is a buyer with no interest in cars to know a Reputable Dealership sold them a modified car! ??

To get a genuine 5.2 to 60 from a front wheel drive 2.0 TSI, it would need more than just a map IMHO. That's 1.4 seconds off the official time of 6.6?

You would almost certainly need bigger turbo, intercooler, high pressure fuel pump, injectors, exhaust, cold air intake etc., some of which should be visible.

Oh, and some traction...

^^^ Where did you pick that time from, and why does 0-60 mph ever get mentioned.

It is pick a time any time even with Skoda, as VW, Audi & even SEAT will show a quicker time just because they can even if the same HP and they are even heavier.

(Premium Brands VW / Audi so buyers are not going to pay more unless the VW Group say they are quicker, more economic and have lower emissions.  Even if not true.)

So times are like anything, especially max HP / torque, Minimum you should achieve at high or low levels above sea level & in temperature extremes and on 95 ron unleaded.  Better can obviously be achieved in ideal conditions and with higher octane fuels.

5.2 seconds even just to 60 mph is fast from an Octavia FWD that had 220ps min from the factory unless on a downhill slope with nice sticky tyres on a grippy surface and a good remap.

eg

VW Fictional  times, compared to real world times,

but then with New Cars what would one expect....

266 BHP min or what ever of Lardy Golf. That should go like the wind not like they really went, ie not as quick as VW made out.

Simple test. Floor it in 2nd gear on a dry, flat tarmac road. If the wheels spin then it has been mapped. My unmodded VRS TSI will retain traction on good surfaces within 2nd, but will spin on damp or uneven surfaces. I imagine a mapped car would easily break traction on anything other than track tarmac.

'Simply clever',

problem there is some have no remap just pretty crap tyres fitted, even Skoda CZ are known for fitting Crap Tyres OEM.

Dunno about that video you posted, but I have measured, GPS, on my totally stock car and with winter tires, 6.3s 0-100km/h

...and yes, I was also suspicious, so did another run and got 6.5s so... it was no fluke. I am more surprised at how slow those Golf Rs from the video you posted are - they should surely be putting out mid 5s in there.

What I do agree is that getting on the 5s with an Octavia is going to take a lot of effort - it is not so much a power issue but a lack of grip issue. I could see getting to 6.0 or 5.8, but not much further.

Mind you, my winter tires are 17" and when I put the 19" summers the car felt WAY slower to launch. Might be able to put more power down but then it surely will need a remap. Also, I have the stock 225 size. Maybe with 235 (or even 245, for the brave ones) it will be able to put more power down.

Good, is this your stock Octavia and with 95 ron Unleaded?

It should better official times in perfect conditions.  Winter tyres can be very good for traction as can Traction Control off and a good surface.

Thanks for the comments. It could be just that the app isn't very accurate I suppose. I will try it again with a stop watch when the weather is better.

Nip it up to Santa Pod or some other RWUB day near you and really see.

Plenty do then you know what you can get out of it.

As to the Traffic Light Grand Prix the times are totally different with even identical cars starting by a light,

when timing on your own you go at your own leisure.

As to the Mk6 VW Golf R's, they really were and still are a bit crap off the line.

Actually even rolling start or 30mph and floor it and they are still lardy.

I use Shell V power nitro in it. I only have the stock 18" Gemini wheels with continental sport contact 5's. It would spin the wheels in 2nd gear but the front tyres were at about 2.5 - 3 mm tread. They have recently been replaced with new ones of the same tyre.

Cheers, i meant that question for Jaco2k, but it is best when people say what fuel and tyre they have,  Motoring Journalists fail often to say.

Reviewers and journalist even fail to mention tyre pressures quite often, or bother with corner weights or saying if there is a spare wheel /tool kit in.

What cars do in the real world does matter more than the figures Manufacturers say,

and sticking 4 and some luggage in the boot and show the times matters more, especially with Taxi Sized vehicles.

the 1.4TSI Kodiak looks pathetic at accelerating 30-70 or 80mph.

The Polo GTI is about acceptable unless you put 3 in the car that frequent KFC often.

Erm, in the video the manual car was a 5-door, v a 3-door DSG, possible weight difference + both cars were stated to be low mileage / a little bit tight.

. As for getting off the line in a 2wd car, our R is much faster (as expected) than our other two cars, (both remapped & 6-speed DSG) but once on the move they are quick enough.

The major difference is that the EOS has the high-geared final drive DSG which does take the edge of it's acceleration but is more relaxed at high speeds. (3K rpm = 95 mph, rather than

77 & 80 mph in the Superb & Golf.)

If the OP is still unsure if his car is remapped, try flooring the gas pedal at app. 2K rpm in 3rd or 4th, if it gathers speed without any noticeable hiccups or jerks it's probably been mapped.

All the 5 maps that we've had done on our 2.0 TSi's  have produced noticeably improved pulling power (torque!) as well as more BHP.

HTH  DC

I see them well used all the time around Aberdeen and the North East, used they are still crap and not quick.  Real world.

PS

See how Auto Express put a VW Polo 3 Door up against a 5 Door MINI and forget to actually weigh them.

Then forget the VW Polo GTI 1.4 TSI also had the battery in the boot for the handling not space,

because the Fabia & Ibiza with the same engine / box had the battery under the bonnet,

But the Fabia vRS hatch had 25 kg ballast on the rear crash bar and a spare as standard, so 45 KG extra making the front light.

So the Fabia actually still weighed less than a 3 door or 5 door Polo or Ibiza but was given slower official times and a higher Co2 g /km.

Kidology...

I have just tried what you said with 3rd or 4th gear 2000rpm and floored it. There was a delay of probably a second before it pulled off. No jerks or hiccups.

Car is stock (for now...) and I ONLY use Shell V-Power on it ;)

Roughly what would be the cost to do a dyno run? Wouldn't know where to take it either.

Jaco2K,  is Shell V-Power Nitro + 98 Ron min in Finland where as it is 99 ron min in the UK?

£40 quid i think

Pretty much, yeah.

Just a thought... what's the app? Perhaps someone else could test their stock 220 and see what the result is?

GPS acceleration. It's only a free app.

I can guarantee you that you didn't do what your first post claimed.

As others have said, traction.  End of.

I was only trying to find out as this is the screen shot from the app. I am just worried if the car was modified as the insurance would need informing.
