DSG Shudder - when driving at speed

Featured Replies

I've noticed my Mk3 Octy DSG has a slight shudder ONLY when driving in Eco mode, between 3rd & 4th gear (which generally engages at quite low road speeds, being Eco, but engine revs around 1500-2000)

I've confirmed that when driving/accelerating in a similar manner in Normal or Sport, it does not shudder in between 3-4..... or any other gears.... only in Eco.

Only happens when I press the throttle a bit harder in 3rd, to get it moving as it's quite sluggish. It feels like the clutch has slipped or disengaged/re-engaged for a split second at that point. Or almost like wheelspin (which it definitely isn't)

Not sure if this is normal, or something I should be worried about and get investigated?

Car has only recently done 10000km - owned from new.

Anyone else experienced this?  I suspect it's similar to the "shudder" people often complain about DSG boxes, when the clutches first engage when releasing the brake... but this occurs at definite road-speed and engine-revs.

Yeah DSG is NOT fool proof.

It trys to act ahead of you by your current/recent driving style, if you start driving differently it struggles

There are certain speeds where it seems to be on the cusp of wanting to change, but if you are cruising with light right foot, tries to hold the higher gear to save fuel.

It it learns your driving style, trick it by blipping throttle for fraction of a section, to force it to change down

Yeh, the issue I'm experiencing isn't being held/going into higher gear too early for consumption, it's on the gentle acceleration from 3rd to 4th.... if I slightly put the foot down a bit heavier than normal, it jolts midway between the increase in revs, then continues for another 100rpm or so, before changing to 4th.

If I REALLY put the foot down after changing to 3rd, it will just change back to 2nd, as expected......

My 15 plate Vrs DSG does exactly the same in eco mode.

I thought it was clutch slip too. Certainly thats what it feels like.

But then why would it not slip in any other mode if that's what it is?

My solution is to never ever put it into eco mode!

Sorry i know that doesn't necessarily help you with an answer.

Glad to hear that it's not JUST my car that does this, and someone else has the exact same issue - even if there's no solution just yet.

Yep - I DO find that driving in Normal mode is a much more pleasant driving experience, and to be honest, I don't think Eco mode benefits me at all.  The ONLY thing I find good about Eco is the coasting mode, but that's easily achieveable (but not really recommended) by just putting it in Neutral in moment where coasting is required.

Think I'll just follow your advise and stop using Eco.

As a side-note: interestingly, I went on a long cruise with some fellow enthusiasts several weekends ago - 3 people in the car (usually just myself or 1 other) - and absolutely thrashing it around some local mountains.
The economy figure was 9.1/100........ most of the driving was in sport mode.
This is similar figures to what I achieve just driving around town in Eco mode !!!

I know I have a bit of a heavy right foot, but I don't generally thrash the car around town...... yet Eco mode doesn't seem to be giving me any benefits in terms of economy :(

I repeated the drive the following weekend with just 1 passenger, and achieved almost identical economy of 9.0/100 !!!

I consider this to be pretty good, considering the amount of spirited driving I did..... and it puzzles me how I can only achieve similar figures when putting around town (either in Eco or Normal mode), when others on here are achieving much much better economy figures.

I read on this forum in another post that the best overall mpg is obtained in sport mode.

I remember doing a run to work in eco mode then the same run home in sport and i got more mpg on the way home.
