Looking at Octy vRS Diesel...

Featured Replies

Been a long time since being here, as got rid of my Furby vRS a good few years ago. Looking at an Octy tomorrow, and genuinely excited to look and drive it. Had a look at a few posts about things to look for (paintwork above rear window, gear selector and a loud 'boom' at low speeds)

anything else to to look for? Anything unmentioned so far regarding the car to be aware of? The car looks fully loaded with toys, so hoping it isn't terrible!

It's a very nice motor but do NOT have any realistic expectations of half-decent fuel economy.

I suspect the engine is pushing out considerably more than the advertised 184bhp but this has a seriously adverse affect on the mpg.

Currently have an Astra diesel, which I can barely get to 49mpg on my 35 mile dual carriageway commute...so as long as it is relatively comparable, it's fine with me!

No, it won't be relatively comparable.

Others here will promise you exorbitant figures, take it from me that low 40s is the best you can hope for.

Ditto, 42 was my average with 13 the lowest (continual regens over a single tank due to swmbo doing short runs) and 47 the highest.

Having had both, I'd recommend manual over DSG (unless you sit in traffic a lot).

A long test drive to make sure you're happy with the general road noise is very important (o.k. on good surfaces, but there's not that many good surfaces on U.K. roads !) - otherwise, they're a very good car overall.

Everyone drives differently. Mpg wise in a manual, 2 people with a couple of bags, driven fairly quick on a mixture of A & B roads and dual carriageways, I got 50 mpg average and 55 on  motorways/dual carriageway long trips. This is based on 60k miles driving and tank to tank measurements with the car set in 'normal mode' but with sport steering selected. In full 'sport mode', I'd see around 7-10% less in general.

I got a 2014 VRS TDi DSG in November to replace an Audi A4. Never looked back! Great in sport/normal mode and pretty efficient on my commute.

I'm 26 miles each way on mostly dual/motorway and I have not gone under 50mpg. A couple of average speed 40mph sections but mostly 70mph (ish) and using eco mode for this I see 55mpg on most trips.

The extra trip to shops, visiting people bring the average down but as I said - not seen under 50 in over 4 months.

My Audi was averaging 39mpg under the same conditions (although it was 2.5TDi and Quattro).

On my drive to work and back - approx 65 miles, I tend to average around 47 mpg. I'm sure I could get this better but I'd have to set the alarm for earlier:blink:

My work commute is 120 miles (round trip) on country A roads, so a few hills and plenty of corners, plus a few villages, plus Weymouth and Salisbury.  I see low 50s from my 2014 CR VRS DSG which is fast approaching 66k.  Generally in D, but do sometimes boot it up hills in S for a bit of fun :-)  Return trip sees probably 10-15 minutes of stop-start through Salisbury and the outskirts of Dorchester.

Ignoring the fuel economy argument which has been done to death many times over on here..

Some people can get 60 other only get 40, theres lots of factors that influence this & no correct answer when its your car & you driving.

There are a few things to check on the O3.

BOOM in the rear of the car when driving on rough road surfaces. Theres are long thread here & still 3 years on there is no official fix from Skoda.

Check you are happy with the road noise on the real car you will take home before signing.

Diesel has two main service issue:

   - Water Pump broken due to stuck plastic blades - should be corrected Under warrenty but after 3 years others have had to argue & pay part of the cost

   - Boost Pressure Sensor/wiring - causing MIL light & limp-home - affected cars built at the beginning of 2014

Other than that its a pretty solid car with a well known chassis & powertrain from VAG and not really any major issues & big complaints.

Cheers, this is a massive help. I signed on the dotted line today after driving. Everything seemed good with it, everything worked, looked mint and didn't notice any excess road noise on the test drive.

regarding the water pump, is this something I can just go into a dealer with and ask them to fix?!

If it's approved used you'll get the minimum 1 year warranty and roadside assistance, or the balance of the manufacturers warranty if it's nearly new. If it happens in this time then yeah it's their problem not yours.

How old is the car you've bought?

You can ask the dealer for a printout of the service record & see if it had already been done.

Although a common fault, I'm not sure it's actually a service bulletin so it's not automatically changed when the car visits a dealer & the dealer probably won't change it for free without a reason.

I've done 70k km over the last 3 years & didn't have a problem. I mentioned it to the dealer each service but they said there was no problem or need to replace it.

If you are buying from an approved dealer you'll get 1 year warranty which will give you peace of mind for a short while. At least if you've discussed it with them, you have good grounds for them to compensate some of the cost of it happens afterwards.

It's a 64 plate. It's not from a skoda dealer...decent spec are rare as rocking horse doodoo around here. It's from a very reputable dealer though.

on a 64 plate it is unlikely to have the issue with the overheating caused by a sticky sleeve on the waterpump which affected early CR VRS's, as the pump was revised by them (I believe).  Changing a water pump is expensive in terms of labour, so I again another reason why I think it is unlikely they would have been replaced en-mass.

I triggered mine with a short (sub 10 minute) drive around town and then a steep hill climb, at the top it overheated, and then the sleeve un-jammed allowing the water pump to function correctly and normal service was resumed.

You're lucky you found one locally with plenty of toys! I made a 9 hour round trip as nothing with decent options came up near me ;)

Aye, very lucky. Hopefully it will be as good as it looks! It has all the toys i wanted from my next car, so hopefully 4 years of peaceful motoring. Not had that since i got rid of my Fabia vRS!
