Strut Braces

Featured Replies

Steve, FYI...

The Washers for the lower brace are the wrong size, so you can either discard or simply not order them. I think Nick mentions this in his post re - the lower brace :)

Top man  (maybe better to stick this in the Group buy section)

1. Steve vRS

2. Q (upper and lower incl all the gubbins required).

:+1:

If you are interested in a potential group buy on strut braces please use the link in Steve's post above, do not reply to this thread otherwise it will get confusing.

Also don't forget nuts & bolts for the upper brace.

Use M8 or M10 Bolts as you prefer, 10's will fit, 8's will be easier :)

6 x M8 OR M10 x 25mm long Bolts

12 x M8 or M10 Flat Washers

6 x M8 or M10 Spring washers (use between nuts & Flat washers on the top fixings)

6 x M8 or M10 Nuts. I used the type with nylon locking inserts.

At least2 x 6mm HSS drill bits for pilot holes

1 x 8.5mm or 10.5mm HSS bit for full size holes, depending on bolts used.

Suitable colour paint for holes (i used smooth hammerite as its out of sight)

Thanks Geoff ! We should really add this to a FAQ of some sort as well... hint, hint, nudge, nudge :D.

Good work Mr. Hanger

Steve

As requested, a pic of the bolt & washers so you know what to look for.

I don't have a spare nut to hand, but it's a normal 8 or 10mm nut with a nylon ring at the top.

You could use normal nuts but i prefer to over-do things a bit rather than do a cowboy job like a lot of "professionals" would :)

Is that a straight return to a previous PM Geoff?

I'd use the correct torque and a spring washer with a little locktite ;)

Statement of fact actually ;)

As for "correct torque", well if you can find out what it is without a manual go right ahead :)

There will be a correct tightening torque for an M10 bolt . I will find out on Tuesday at work :P

Complete waste of time IMHO. It's not a safety-critical part so there's no need to use a torque wrench ;)

How old then dad?

Steve

Like i said, a few years ;)

Steve, when all the others get their braces, i think we should disappear for a few days. We don't want to be hassled by I.T. Geeks etc for fitting info, do we? :D

The IT geeks will do a Google search. It's the Civil Engineers I'm worried about. They'll grout them in :D

I would find a where to buy bolts / threadlock nuts / washers from "how to" good...

... cause the bloke in happy Halfords just looked at me with the WTF grin(similar to the 'excuse me Sir, where are your distribution blocks?' grin which was equally as annoying...don't mention Gold plating.. that really screws them up !)

Try a local engineering or tool supplier. Take the list that Geoff wrote above and Bob is your mum's brother ;)

Failing that, I'll get a job lot and post them out to folk (with a torque wrench on a hire basis ;) )

Steve

Let me stay in my "thicko" world and check Geoff's list ......

Bolts..

Engineering suppliers, Electrical wholesalers or, if you decide to fit the brace at 4 pm on a saturday like me...B&Q Warehouse ;)

... Same boat !

Tried B&Q and they gave me the "WTF" stare

Similar to the Halfords "WTF" stare when I asked them for a GOLD distribution block....

Ah................... retail !

Ahh...but i went to B&Q knowing what i needed, so i didn't need to ask a monkey ;)
