How to remove Rain-X?

Featured Replies

I've applied some rain-x to my windscreen (actually two separate windscreens, both with the same effect) and it causes hideous wiper judder, it's driving me insane. However I cannot remove the stuff at all!

Does anyone know what will get rid of it? So far I've tried multiple applications of: General glass cleaner, washing up liquid (neat and dilute), White spirit, methylated spirit, brake cleaner, autoglym glass polish, clay bar, AG tar remover, IronX, TarX, couple of degreaser's, and hand decreasing wipes. Nothing works at all. Any of you guys any ideas?

Neat Vinigar or a Lemon cut in half and rubbed alover the screen, might work

Well, you tried all I was going to suggest, so, Napalm? :D

You could try IPA or claying the screen, but most likely you'll have to wait till it wears off and never use it again.

Have you tried a new set of wiper blades?.Wiper judder drives Me up the wall as well.

Cheers guys, sorry I'd forgotten about the ones you've said; tried those too without luck!! With both new and old wiper blades too, no difference :wall:

Iso propyl alcohol will get it off.

I've had the Wroth of Mrs G tongue in the passed on many occasions , should easily clean a Windscreen

I'll send her round

After cleaning the wiper rubbers try applying some rain-x to them - pour some on a kitchen towel and run along the blade.

cheers

Surely this will just transfer even more rain x to the screen . Fluffy is trying to get rid of the awful stuff.

IPA removes it easily. The reason for the judder is the screen and wipers weren't clean before you applied it and then it needs to be buffed to ensure even coverage.

Sorry just thinking outside the box:wondering:...why try and remove what is a reasonably good product when a quick clean and coat of the wipers could result in judder free wipers and still maintain the benefits of having the coating on the screen.

cheers

Well, I think I have managed to get rid of it.

IPA did not work at all. Neat and dilute, with and without scrubbing, at did nothing. However I think I have found a glass polish that actually polishes it off. This stuff worked well, no judder and much less (almost no) beadage after two applications by hand: Zaino Z-12 Clear-View Glass Polish. Obviously not all glass polishes are created equal, as I had tried Autoglym's and it did nothing. I'm sure others may work too, but the Zaino seemed to have good reviews and was a last attempt before I completely ran out of ideas.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and help! :)

Glad to hear you got rid of it. I have to say I've never tried glass coatings but it seems to be a solution to a problem that doesn't really exist, especially with issues regarding wiper blade judder that I read about or is this just a rain x specific issue

I had the same so I cleaned mine with white spirit carefully applied via blue roll.

Did the trick and cleared all the wiper inducing Rain X off!

Well I shall certainly be trying this product out. I need to give my screen a deep clean so I think this shall be part of the process I will be using after 0000 wire wool and fall out remover, clay etc. Glad you got it sorted taxboy.

I'm no expert on glass polishes, and you may well be able to get much better ones; but this was ok for me. At the very least it made it lovely and clean! With that process you've got I don't think you'll go wrong with it!

Also, how do you properly use the wire wool? And does it leave minute scratches on the glass? Heard good things about it but never been brave enough to try it!

Rain-X specific, in my experience. I've had no similar issues with Aquapel, over the last 7 years or so.

I've given up applying Rain-X to the windscreen as I always got judder no matter what I tried. I just clean it well and use autoglym window polish which provides enough beading without the judder.

I may give the aquapel a go though as heard good things!
