Can VAGCOM Read True Miles?

Featured Replies

Seen a car on Ebay where according to owner, when he replaced the battery it did something to the cluster and has left it on 999,999.

Would VAGCOM be able to read the true miles from the ECU?

Or would that be an Dealer system thing?

Depending on the age of the car yes, I think it is only the very early cars that the mileage is not shown.

Battery removal wouldn't make the cluster do that though

It's ECU dependant according to Ross Tech. I've known some cars which would allow it, and others which wouldn't, and some which were clearly clocked had apparently had the ECU locked out to prevent that means of reading the correct mileage (but I might've made that bit up or read it on a cornflakes box).

Ahhhh ok.

And the car has had this for a few years now, would of thought he would of replaced the cluster or at least have it sent away to be fixed (if it could)

Sounds a bit suspicious to me, as if it's had a new cluster fitted and someone's mucked up the fitting!

MoT history check is a good shout

If the car is the Audi TT reg A002 OLX on eBay then the MOT history checker does not recognise it so beware.

It is worth asking the seller whether he has sold the plates separately and it is on new plates.

Edit: I was wrong in that the registration number is AO02 OLX and this does give an interesting MOT history. Whilst not all of the entries have mileage recorded the first occurance of 999,999 was on 26th April 2013. Also between 2006 and 2007 it appears to have lost over 5000 recorded miles according to the MOT records.

incorrect Registration Number

A common trait of corrupted software in dash pods (often caused by sloppy mileage correction) can be shown as "DEF", "L-R" and indeed - "999,999"...

So people are thinking he's tried to have it clocked and its all gone Super Star DJ!

If you search online for 'Audi 999,999' you will find a number of occurance where people claim that it happened without them doing anything out of the ordinary.

The question is would you buy a car where you did not know how many miles it had done as such things affect the resale value. Also how would he know when to get it serviced if he did not keep a record of the mileage? Was he using the trip meter and if so then he should know how far it has travelled.
