Two quick bangs while braking at slow speed 2003 Skoda superb.

Featured Replies

Hello , there is 2 bangs in quick succession .

Sometimes it happens when I've been driving about 10mph and then about a second after I aplly the brakes there's 2 quick bangs as I come to a stop .

I was thinking anti roll bar links but there is no banging when I go over speed bumps.

I've read somewhere it could be a ball joint , or the brake pads moving in the caliper although I have never seen or heard of this before reading it.

Anyone on here had this issue and if so what did it turn out to be ?

I would say if it was any of the CV joints you would hear a clunking under engine braking at slow speed. Say if you crawl along at idle in 1st gear, if you press the throttle briefly and then let off you would normally hear a clack as the slack is taken up and another clack as the slack is taken up the other way.

If it doesn't do this it is probably more brake related or a suspension component. I think the old Superb has a very over complicated 4 arm suspension system on the front that I have had the misfortune of working on before (but on the passat). Jacking the car up and giving each wheel a wiggle may help but ideally you want a pry bar to test each of the 4 ball joints on the steering knuckles and look for any excess play

I thought you would test a CV joint by driving on full lock either way to listen which side the clacking is coming from?

Saying that about the brakes I did replace the discs a while back because it failed on the brake test for mot turned out one of the discs was warped .

But I didn't replace the pads because they still have loads of life left in them .

I had to use spray copper grease because that's all the parts shop had at the time , which I know is crap .

The noise just seems to loud to be pads to me

I had an issue on our MKI, when straight after the pads had been replaced, the front callipers were clicking loudly both during application and releasing the brake - it drove me nuts for a couple of weeks until it was cured. IIRC, there are some metal blocks in the calliper that wear and cause this. Sorry I can't be more specific as this was six or seven years ago.
